So, if you listen to the Xbox 360 Fancast, you may have heard this blogger mention that he wasn't picking up Rock Band until he learned to play a real song. While our resident achievement whore figured it was merely an excuse not to buy Rock Band, I'm here to tell you I was serious. Yes, it's not exactly earth-shattering news, but it's something that seems worth discussing. It seems like almost all stories about Rock Band and Guitar Hero are haunted by that guy. You know the one. He's the one that says: "Why the hell would I want to pretend to play guitar? I'd rather do the real thing." At this point, that guy may resort to calling the other posters "nerds," all the while failing to realize the irony that he is making this comment on an internet forum catering exclusively to video game discussion.
Double standards aside, the point is that I've decided to put his creed into practice (the "too close to home" nature of the Guitar Hero episode of South Park didn't hurt either). The larger cultural question here is whether or not Guitar Hero or Rock Band has inspired other like-minded folk to learn how to play as well. So, has the recent spate of musical games inspired you? Whether they have or not, feel free to share your opinion in the comments.
Oh, and wish me luck, my fingers already hurt like hell.

I want to try this too - well, at least pick up a real guitar and get used to play it for real. I skipped on GH3 cause GH2 already took too much of my time... I don't know if I can resist Rock Band though. And I'm not sure what guitar I should pick up. I think an acoustic with a plug would be nice for the start

I tried to learn how to play a few years back and its not easy thats for sure. You know youre doing it right when your fingers start to bleed.
On a side note, last week when my 72 year old Uncle saw me playing Guitar Hero, He kept repeating the same thing - "Wow, You can really play the guitar?"
"Wow, You can really play the guitar?"
"no, uncle Kenny this is just a game"
"Wow, come out here and show your Aunt how you play that guitar."
point being, if you cant impress the younger crown with the REAL thing, you can sure as hell impress the older ones by faking it!

I tried Guitar Hero, and just couldn't do it. Especially not for the songs I knew really well. Being able to actually play an instrument spoiled it for me. I'd have to un-learn what my fingers want to do on the fretboard, and then further learn how to use the buttons instead.
Not worth it for me, both in time and money - but I can EASILY see how the game could be an incredible amount of fun, and I don't begrudge anyone playing it and enjoying it.

Playing the guitar is a great hobby and well worth the effort.
Now all you need to do is buy and drive a Subaru Impreza before playing Colin McRae ;-)

@viridium, i have a friend who plays guitar and told me the same thing - he just couldn't do it, especially for the songs he already knew how to play on a real guitar.
as far as learning to play Guitar for real - no I'm not really interested, however, I am afraid that if my dad ever finds out I play Guitar Hero he might be extremely hurt, since he's an avid guitar player and always tried to get me to learn.

I've been playing guitar since around 92. the last 5 years I haven't had a guitar. if I would have saved the money I spent on GH2 GH3 and rock band I could have gotten a decent guitar again.

Guitar Hero plays like if you were doing riffs in drop D.... mostly nu-metal songs.
anyhow I play the guitar... poorly. I have horrible timing... which is why in GH, I can't get the notes that come succession (ex: Sabotage by the Beastie Boys).

I have tried to play for real, but it was hard for me to understand all the strings and everything. So GH will do it for me for now unless I decide to give it another go

Ha - That guy here (although I've managed to refrain posting too many incendiary comments).
My advice:
#1: Keep playing, and play every day. One of the main hurdles is finger strength/dexterity. You'll get there, but your fingers will hurt like hell for a couple of weeks until you get used to it.
#2: Learn barre chords (bar chords); which are interestingly enough the foundation of most of the songs you hear on the radio.
Good luck, you'll get there...start with Smells Like Teen Spirit (four barre chords) and Disarm (four standard chords), and keep it up.

Oh, also listen to the advice of #10 - drop D tuning is pretty boss, too. All you have to do is be able to press down three strings at once (by barring the string), and you can play as many chords as you can reach frets. Almost all Rage Against the Machine and Helmet(if you remember helmet) songs are drop D tuning.

After beating the GHII campaign on expert and five starring all songs except for 5, I actually have been inspired to drop out of law school and start a band. Wish me luck.

Reading the load screens of Rock Band, I've encountered a few that say "maybe it's time to invest in a real guitar!" and "if you want to make more noise, you should try investing in a real drum set".

It's true that I've had to unlearn just about everything I know about playing guitar (been playing for 15 yrs) to successfully play Rock Band. I've actually found that the harder levels make more guitar sense than the easy ones. Still, there is little relation in the two activities. That said, there is a certain satisfaction in playing solos in these games that require much more skill in real life

I can play quite a few songs on bass, rhythm, and lead. I used to have a few rockers on my floor in rez and they taught me quite a bit. I could actually hop in and jam on a song I knew, it was awesome.
GH2 and 3 gave me that same feeling for $100, and Rock Band amped it up a notch for $170.
Considering that I have money to make and gaming/music is an afterthought, I'd rather perform with a video game at a fraction of the time/cost/effort/talent.
Essentially, it's like masturbation.

Guitar Hero 2 inspired me to give it a shot. I been playing the piano since 6 years old, im 22 now. I bought a Schecter c-1+ cherry black finish and a Fender Stage 1000 amp.
Guitar Hero III inspired me to try to play my favorite band, Muse. Knights of Cydonia on Expert is so goddamn hard for me (repeating notes, some problem with double strumming). They I go and learn it on the real guitar and find out u play only like 50 percent of the time.
The rest is bass.
So in this case Guitar Hero III is way fucking harder than the real thing.
Course Ill never be as good as Matthew Bellamy :)
