Video: How Mass Effect does space combat
There's a new Mass Effect combat video making the internet rounds lately, showing off how Mass Effect does alien killing. In the soldier class video (that we've embedded above) you'll get a taste of the game's targeting system, weapon switching, target painting, aiming and basic cover. You'll also once again see that the game is stunningly beautiful, the combat looks solid and man do we hope that the music isn't reserved just for the video. Their music selection actually makes the combat scenario feel intense and ... well, epic. Oh joy! Give it a watch and put your finely tuned fanboy analysis skills to work.

Not to be nitpicky or anything, but I really wouldn't call that space combat. You guys had me thinking that Mass Effect was going to feature ship-to-ship combat in space. Bummer.

Good old Bioware, finally combining my love of their RPGs with 3rd person shooting. 17 days is far too long a wait for me...

I read the title thinking Mass Effect added literal Space Combat, as in with ships in space. Way to abuse our love for spaceships for personal gain X3F, you broke my heart.

the cover system looks very nice. it looks like you can still fire while going into it, unlike that other 3rd person cover game. i'm not sure i like how it pauses the game to switch weapons but it still looks cool. i cant wait to see the actual space stuff, too. unless dustin has been writing all the mass effect articles and there wont actually be any spacy stuff, like interplanetary travel, that i've come to anticipate.
i'm also disappointed that you cant get above 40-50000 feet in ace combat. at least let me get to the top of the stratosphere, ya know? it's 2007, come on!

Pausing the game whilst navigating weapons/powers menu makes sense simply because, well, you can think of what weapon your gonna switch to faster than you can navigate the menu. Get fast at switching weapons and will barely notice a pause.
Plus the pause adds a tactical edge to think about your next move much like KotOR and Jade Empire.

@ 1 - Agreed! I have absolutely no clue what the title of this post actually means. If "space combat" isn't "combat in space" (meaning with space ships) then what does it mean? This combat isn't in space. Not that I'm angry or anything, I'm mostly confused. Am I missing something? Have I forgotten how the english language works?

Look at his eyes when he's facing the camera and tell me he doesn't look perpetually surprised.

The facial expressions do look a bit lifeless. After watching the vids of Drake's Fortune I hope that Mass Effect 2 will implement these graphical improvements.

I don't know, I think the facial expressions are fine. I mean, we're just running around shooting stuff here. They're solid in the conversational parts which I think is most important

Change the title of the RSS link - there's nothing 'spacey' about that combat.
Should be titled 'Combat Video: Soldier Class' or something. Definately not what I thought I was getting.. I expected combat. In space.

Mike-453,
i wonder if the army has thought about pausing reality to give soldiers a better tactical edge whilst fighting. how is that realistic at all? no other games pause to let you switch weapons. gears, graw, halo, r6 - all are live action weapon swaps. games that aren't are practically turn based games. "let me switch weapons so i can be safe and not get shot at while i sit here deciding which gun to use next." i guess you could just pause the game and think about your tactic but who really does that? it's a video game. try and die and try again.

@16 - It's an RPG. Not America's Army. Don't worry about it. Besides, I thought the combat was controlled on a deep level by turns and number rolls anyway. The whole aiming part is just a different way to display it.
Anyway, does anyone else find this video a little...I don't know...busy? Like there's too much going on and the game is going to get confusing?

if any of you die hards read the other ME posts by the dev team, you would already know the ship to ship combat IS NOT part of this game.
That is a possibility for the the other 2 installments, but not part of this story.

Here's a game that lets you pause to switch weapons:
KOTOR
ie, the game this is pretty much a fucking sequal to but without the lightsabers
