EA and Activision find mud, start slinging

We knew it had to happen eventually. EA and Activision have officially begun sniping one another in regards to Rock Band and Guitar Hero III. In one corner, you have Activision's Will Kassoy who sees Guitar Hero III as a highly accessible sequel in a genre-defining series. Furthermore, he says that Rock Band may prove too complicated for the average gamer, while Guitar Hero III offers fun for everyone. EA, naturally, takes a different stand. According to EA's Frank Gibeau, the various choices available in Rock Band (guitar, bass, drums, and vocals) is precisely what makes it accessible. As Gibeau notes, some folks would rather sing than play guitar. Which will ultimately win? Gamers will decide later this year.

1. I just hope that Rock Band stops people from singing in FPS's

2. The fact of the matter is that if I really wanted to ignore singing and drumming in Rock Band, I can. Then it's essentially just like GH.

I'd rather have more, honestly. The track listing in GH3 is good, but comparatively speaking, the game just doesn't interest me as much. Full albums for Rock Band kind of pushed that one over the top for me.

3. I'm buying Rock Band because I love the guitar and my bro loves the drums. I also really like the look of the Rock Band guitar. I got a lot of crap from my wife when she saw the GHII guitar for looks like Fisher Price made it.

4. Alls I knows is I wants me drums, Precious, yes.

5. @1 - hahaha oh man, if I had a penny for everyone that sung during fps's, I would be a dollar richer!

I will be getting both.
Rock Band, I might just dish out seperately for the drums, and I will pick up GH3 with the wireless guitar.

I also like the fact that you can customize your character in Rock Band.

6. I will win with my recently pattened Rock Hero 3

7. Ha... From the article: "In EA Sports [for example], when you go up against competition, it just brings the best out in an organization,"

Then why did you buy up the right to sports like football and nascar to squash competition?

The the Activision guy says "In a way, I feel like it's [EA's] challenge to come in and make some inroads against this franchise that's become such a pop culture phenomenon."

Umm, do you realize that they're going to be able to USE your franchise? Most people will simplify the explanation of the game down to "It's Guitar Hero with drums and singing". People get what it's about, remember that GH was fun and then think that drums and singing would make it even better. The only thing working against Rock Band is the price of buying all the instruments.

8. I think a lot of the core people who will buy this, initially at least, will realize (and possibly already know) that Rock Band is being made by the original developers of GH as it is.

It makes me wonder how important the franchise name will be over the course of this, although I'm sure it'll help and GH3 will do well regardless.

9. I think if you're a fan of the GH series, you've gotta get Rock Band.. And that being said, since you like GH you gotta get GH3. I'll be getting both, but probably only pick up the game for Rock Band.. I can do without singing & drums for now.. That's what online is for :) Any who, both will be sweet.

Posted at 1:57PM on Aug 10th 2007 by DeadPlasmaCell

10. I'm not getting either because I can't/dont want to shell out money for a plastic guitar my roommates will break while playing.

Posted at 2:26PM on Aug 10th 2007 by Emily

11. Hopefully consumers will win, because neither party will be able to overcharge for DLC etc (a la Guitar Hero 2).

I'm planning on getting both, as long as Rock Band isn't ridiculously overpriced.

12. EA is like an Evil country that invades and trys to take over. They will never reach the cult status that Guitar Hero has achieved. Their games are crappy and they make their money with quantity not quality.

13. didnt like GH so i wont be getting either of them.

15. @ 13: Rasta4Eye
EA is just distributing the game, Rock Band is made by the creaters of Guitar Hero, Harmonix.

Guitar Hero 3 has a decent tracklist but its an obvious cash-in from hActivision and not a true continuation of the "cult" classics GH1 and 2 while Rock Band is.

16. i already have GhII for 360 so i am going to get GHIII with wireless guitar and then just get rock band with drums so i will have everything except for mic and none of my friends or me want to sing so it all works out
