Bethesda has announced on their blog that the Japanese version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has shipped. The Japanese version of Oblivion has been completely localized, with nearly a million words translated, including ever book in the game. The beginning and ending cinematics have also been re-recorded in Japanese, though spoken dialogue within the game remains in English with Japanese subtitles. What is more, the Japanese version includes the Knights of the Nine content right on the disc (as will the upcoming Game of the Year Edition in America). The game recently received rave reviews from Famitsu -- the game scored a 38, a score equaled or bettered by only 44 titles since September of 1986 -- and production director Ashley Cheng expects the game to be a "breakout hit." Furthermore, Cheng expects it will sell a few Xbox 360s, too (the localized PS3 version is expected in a few months). Whether or not Oblivion affects the 360's performance in Japan, we're happy that Japanese gamers finally get a chance to see what the rest of the world has been raving about.

Is it a crime that I've never played this game? Mass Effect will be my first RPG game (can I call it RPG? Sorry don't want to offend the hardcore)

I consider myself an average RPG fan, I've enjoyed both KOTORs and Jade Empire along some classics like the original paper mario, some final fantasies and of course Earthbound (Mother 2) but I've never really wanted to play Oblvion.
Am I really missing out or should I just wait for Eternal Sonata and Mass Effect this year to fulfill my rpg needs?

I use to be a pretty rabid RPG fan but I can say I skipped Oblivion entirely. The older Elder Scrolls games were fantastic but the entire look and feel of this game was very off putting.
I've always wondered if I'm really missing out. People rave about it, it got high scores, but it really doesn't look special to me. Yep and Ashley Cheng is a he, rTwelve is right. Unless he had a sex change I've yet to read about. Well time to play some Super Paper Mario. I'll be waiting on Mass Effect this year, played the demo for Eternal Sonata and it's an average JRPG. May dable in some Blue Dragon when the price comes down a bit.

I started off playing Oblivion on my PC and loved it even though I had to play at sad graphic detail levels. When I saw the screenshots of the 360 version I was sold and thats why I got my first 360. If you like completely open-ended role playing then you will love this game. If you have to know where to go and what to do next then you're probably looking for something more linear. The scope of the game is astounding though. I've played through it 3 times and still have only completed maybe half of all the side quests available. The only thing it lacks compared to the PC version is all the custom fan-built mods that improve on an already great game.

It'll probably be a crime until Mass Effect comes out, then it won't be so bad, but its well worth the cost. Hundreds of hours that aren't level grinding -- I hate RPGs and its friggin fantastic.

This game was the (1st) reason I bought a 360. 100+ hours and I still haven't completed the main quest, but that's the beauty. You can decide what you want to do next.

The world might have been open but it was too static for any of the "open" gameplay to really do much for me. It felt like single player WoW. Just a lot of dungeon crawling with a boring story I had no influence over tacked on.

Oblivion was the first game that I bought for my 360, and it is worth every penny and more!
Wait for the GotY edition to come out. That should have KotN ($10) and SI ($30) on it, if I'm not mistaken, not to mention all of the DLC that's available on XBLM.
Either way, please play this game. Mass Effect and Eternal Sonata will be must-buys for RPG fans this holiday season, but Obliviion is a must-buy, period.
Best XBOX 360 I've played yet. Gears is great, but the story is too short. You can spend hundreds of hours with Oblivion, all by yourself, and not get bored. It's THAT good.

Well most of the comments pretty much says it.. Oblivion is for gamers who don't like RPGs. Any true Japanese RPG fan won't find anything at all to like about this game. I think Americans to assume that real-time action RPGs that look like first-person-shooters will translate across other cultures is just plain misguided. The open ended feel ends up lacking direction and I fail to see the immersiveness in a game where the voice of the characters can change midway in a conversation because you picked a "generic" question that thousands of other characters in the world answer in exactly the same way. Way to lame a lame game.

Raymond, apparently you don't have a clue. Try pulling your head out of your ass and playing Kings Field, an open-ended first-person action-RPG that sold millions in Japan and IS Japanese. This game will do well, and lots of "real" RPG gamers love Oblivion. But by all means, generalise about a game based on a handful of user comments on here, that's the intelligent thing to do. While your at it, drop by the official forums for Oblivion and witness one of the most hardcore and dedicated fanbases of any RPG you'll ever find. Cosplaying FF kiddies? Sorry, we're busy expanding on one of the best games ever made over here. But then again, Oblivion's demo isn't preteen anime freaks.

Wowwww Krimson way to prove that you're a bitter fat assed fanboi nerd living in your mother's basement. Firstly, I have Oblivion for my PS3 because the PS3 currently has no games except shooters, which of course is also a problem with the xbox360.. apparently next gen means appealing to the hardcore shooter nerd crowd whilst boring everyone else, but that's another topic anyway. Secondly, I've never heard of King's Field and I doubt most Japanese have either.. sold millions? Well I guess we'll just have to take your word for it, but there surely is some hyperbole here.. like yea.. a billlion gazzillion dollars.. yea whatever. Thirdly I'm not basing my opinion on what people are saying here, rather I'm challenging what they've said "eg the so-called 'immersiveness' when animations in oblivion are plain suck and the voice acting inconsistent"

LOL, Kings Field sold MILLIONS?? what are you, High? it sold less than 100K in Japan, and that's on PS.
yeah, I wouldn't call anybody else to pull their head out of their asses if I were you. at least get your facts straight.

Actually, I don't consider JRPG fans "true" RPG fans, Raymond. JRPGs tend to be much more linear experiences than what I would call "true" or "Western" RPGs. So, if you want to experience a an open-ended world where you call the shots, try Oblivion. If you enjoy performing specific actions to view the next cutscene, stay away.
