DiRT kicks up 500,000 copies in one week

Codemasters announced today that DiRT has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide in its first week of sale. Codemasters further notes that the game has reached the number one sales position in North America for Xbox 360 and is in the top 5 globally for all platforms. Additionally, the company notes that the Xbox Live Marketplace and PC demos have been downloaded in excess of 500,000 times. On a console dominated by shooters and action games, a racing game landing at number one is a hefty feat indeed, and landing in the top 5 globally is impressive for any title. It would seem Codemasters is on a roll, with both DiRT and Overlord receiving impressive reviews. We're curious to see how well Overlord does at retail (we're guessing that 500,000 copies is a bit high).

1. DiRT is awesome, but very hard with the MS wheel. Forza plays smoother with the wheel....both are must owns!!

DiRT is beautiful too!!

True next gen, with all sorts of damage on the car and the road, barriers, etc.....the first time a tree branch broke through my windshield, I almost shat myself!!

2. sweet, Dirt is a really good game, it deserves it. I wonder how it's gonna stack up to forza 2 sales wise though. I just read somewhere that Forza 2 sold almost 300.000 copies in the US. but I'm guessing worldwide sales are higher than Dirt's.

anyways, great news.

3. Hmm, seems like no1 made a big deal about Dirt being out but, these sales R nice. #1 means Forza is below it. What is the actual placement of Dirt in the global top 5 and what R the other games in that list?

4. Maybe this means we'll get more rally racing games on 360. Other than Sega Rally, I see nothing on the horizon.

And I was one of those smart people who purchased Overlord yesterday. I really hope it somehow finds a huge audience. It's a great game.

5. DiRT is a beautiful game. The MS wheel is hard with this game vs Forza2. Racing some of the rally tracks i about craped my self trying to push my self to go fast and these trails are freaking awesome...GRAPHIC'S ARE WAY COOOL!!!

6. Hands down the best racing game i've ever played. I'm glad it's selling so well.

7. I think with Gears of War and DiRT, we are finally well into the nexgen.

DiRT is just the right mix of sim and arcade to make it insanely fun.

However, it makes me seriously question Forza's decision to lock at 60fps. Forza is a great game, but the graphics don't have the polish of DiRT.

8. Seriously, enough with the FPSs already.

Posted at 6:10PM on Jun 28th 2007 by John

9. I'm not sure about DiRT... I downloaded the demo and I thought the graphics were brilliant and there was plenty of next-gen sheen, but there was just something about the game that wasn't very fun and satisfying to play. Can't place my finger on what it is, though. Also that guy talking you through the menus annoyed the shit out of me.

10. GoW isn't FPS, its a TPS ;)

11. this discussion has come up before ... but with gears you have a first person camera around a fixed point (marcus). which actually does make it a first person shooter. Third person signifies separation.

Webster says "referring to one that is neither the speaker or writer of the utterance in which they occur nor the one to whom that utterance is addressed"

this would be third person:
Danny told Mary that she upset him.
Mary gave Danny the finger.
Danny teabagged Mary until she apologized.

The fact that you are playing as Marcus Fenix and you are not separate from him, makes it first person.

I don't think a 3rd person shooter is even possible, because you'd have to be a character.

12. I STILL haven't played the demo of this, I downloaded it and forgot. I've been slack lately - still haven't played PoP or Carcassone yet either!!

Problem is I might like DiRT, then I'd have go out and spend money on a new game ;o)

13. "However, it makes me seriously question Forza's decision to lock at 60fps. Forza is a great game, but the graphics don't have the polish of DiRT."

The sense of speed you get when racing an R1 car at Maple Valley in Forza 2 wouldn't happen if it wasn't running at 60fps. They made the right trade-off.

14. I'm happy to see Codemasters making money on this one. It's a facking awesome game.

If you're a driving fan, but like games like Burnout over Forza and PGR, then I guarantee you'll love DiRT.

15. I downloaded the demo after reading this article and I am considering getting the game.

The graphics are really good and impressed me more than the Forza demo. It does seem to be a slightly difficult, but it could just be the tracks selected for the demo and me not getting the hang of it yet...

16. Yep, the numbers were high.

They reported copies shipped. The actual number of copies sold is roughly 50% of that:

I'm also curious to find out return rates for this game. It's got a love/hate thing going on for it. Some people absolutely love it, some people absolutely hate it. My guess is that it'll end up being widely available as used from major game retailers really soon.

17. GOD I NEED TO GET HOME FROM NORTH CAROLINA! I live in Missouri, and I pre-ordered the game. I didn't get it before we left, and I CAN'T WAIT! I don't get home to the 30th.

I think I'm going to die...
