Fresh out of hell's oven is the first review for upcoming 360 release
The Darkness and word on the street is that it's actually good. 1UP posted the first review and gave the game a whopping 9.0 out of a possible 10. They felt that the presentation, the look, the gameplay and overall incorporation of the Darkness features (tentacles and all) were very polished and fun. As the saying goes, "it just works". Completing the game will take an average of ten or so hours, but 1UP feels that players can easily get distracted by messing around with the physics engine or taking advantage of the game's down times by roaming the city. The only drawback to the game is its somewhat gimmicky multiplayer, which developer Starbreeze even admits shouldn't be taken too seriously. Overall, we're impressed by how much 1UP was impressed by the game and will be patiently watching metacritic for more reviews to hit the internet. Who knows,
The Darkness could actually be a solid game.

I was hoping for at least an 8/10, this one review is a big step in the right direction. I always wait for all the big places to review a game before I make a decision though... but it's looking good so far.

I have to ask a serious question and I'm interested to see if X3F will respond. If X3F was paid to write articles about a particular game would X3F disclose that? The reason for my question is that there has been a TON of The Darkness coverage. I'm sure it's an ok game but it's just another FPS with a few different bells and whistles. The Darkness has a good pedeigree but it's not like the game is so totally revolutionary that it deserves one or two articles every day. At this point, I have to wonder if X3F is getting paid to shill this game b/c I'm tired of seeing so much coverage.

It's only gotten so much coverage because it is so close to release. Just wait until Mass Effect or Bioshock are about to come out...
And honestly, The Darkness is not "just another FPS", it's going to be a great game.

Evan took the words right out of my mouth. This game is coming out soon, looks great, and is scoring great. Remember Forza 2 was in this same position only 2 weeks ago. Everyone was posting all their car art and X3F was no exception. Shadowrun also got this credit a while back. I think it was Knuckles Dawson who would not shut up about it (I'm not criticizing, just saying it as it was). I personally can't wait for the Mass Effect wave; that will be awesome.

Since X3F provides up-to-date coverage on what's happening with the game, shouldn't you bother to read the articles? It looks like a great game, and easily (In my sole opinion) stands up to games like Bioshock, and Mass Effect.
I'm just wondering what a statement like that comes from, because the game looks like one of the best games I've seen in a while. =)

Also you said "I have to ask a serious question and I'm interested to see if X3F will respond." as if your question of why everyone is rating it so high is incredibly important. They don't respond to every small question we ask, however it's possible if you acually ask a serious question they will cover it in their podcast. Since I'm pretty sure you don't listen to their podcast (Or any other gaming podcast for that matter) to ask a question like that... I'll let you know ;-)

Alright, I'm with Derek on the whole "nothing appealing about this game idea". can someone explain what this brings to the FPS genre besides pretty looking graphics that is expected out of every game already? I see the same thing as always. just a diff. setting and eels on your bodies and that's about it. and X3F wasnt expecting it to be that good. look at the last sentence. "it could actually be a solid game".

10 hours eh? well, I have a 2 for 1 rental coupon from Hollywood Video, and 5 days off coming up, looks like I'll go that route.
I've been interested in this game since it was announced, but $60 for 10 hours isn't worth it.

@ Derek. Look, and this is nothing against Dustin, is that post giving much praise to The Darkness other than stating *other* places are reviewing it highly? No, it isn't, it's a particularly skeptical outlook on the game if I'm honest - is that the sort of approach you would expect from someone getting paid to write about it? Don't think so.

I'll chime in on the 'favoritism' - I gave X3F the heads-up about the review. I've hear a LOT of people dissing this game for months, and seeing the generous 9.0 was nice validation.
People have ripping every aspect of the game : graphics (what?), theme, 'generic repetitive FPS gameplay', etc. Um, there's a little FPS coming out in September that people are pretty psyched about, I don't buy the argument that FPS is dead.
I'm a huge Riddick:BB fan and couldn't wait for this game to be released. Here's hoping 9.0 is on the low side. Riddick was 9.2-ish if I remember...

I'm not really sure why they wouldn't be covering this a lot to begin with. Regardless as to whether or not you think the game looks "generic" it's from a pretty respected developered, the first game from said developer since the excellent Riddick, part of an extremely popular genre on the system, a good looking game in its own right AND it's coming out soon.
I'd only think it would be natural for coverage of it to continue to increase here. What else is this close to release now anyway that there's been any real new information on to post about? Nothing?

I don't know why people are getting so worked up over the reviews and coverage.
At the end of the day, it's just somebody's opinion in a review and of course you won't always agree with it 100%. Why not try it and form your *own* opinion??
And I agree with others, it's bound to be getting more coverage as the release date moves closer (especially if there's not much else being released.)
And lastly, I'm looking forward to trying this out - those tentacles look fun!!
