Halo 2 updated, ranks reset, the horror!

We knew it was coming, but that doesn't make the hurt any less deep. As part of the new maps finally being rolled into matchmaking playlists, Bungie has officially reset the ranks on Halo 2. A cause of great happiness to some and a source of deep anger to others, the rank refresh is sure to rankle many a player. Of course, others will have a new reason to start playing Halo 2 again. Another bombshell of sorts (even though Bungie informed the masses weeks ago), several of the updated playlists require that you have the new maps. A few playlists (most notably Team Hardcore) remain unchanged, so players without the new maps still have some online options. Finally, Bungie has announced that the new map will be free starting sometime in July. So, if you're still playing Halo 2 and you want the new maps but you're light on funds, all is not lost.

Now if you'll excuse us, we have to go own some noobs before our rank resettles in its rightful place.

[Thanks, PacoDG]

My 31 is gone? oh teh noes!1!

Whatever, it was in T Slayer, which I haven't played in probably 10 months because of the rampant modding and cheatign. There's less of that shit in the HC & Sniper playlists anyway. And my Hardcore rank was never really all that high.

My big question is why they chose not to include the new maps in Hardcore. Especially derelict, which seemed a good candidate.

I like playing on reset ranks. But not being able to play Team Skirmish without paying 4 bucks is crazy. If Halo 2 was still a new game, its understandable, but this game is literally years old.

The maps look like poo anyway. Tombstone more so than Desolation. I can't believe Bungie gave their stamp of approval on these turds. If I knew these maps were coming out for free in three weeks I would have waited.

On the other hand I wish I called in today and started working on getting my rank back up.

Finally tracked down an Elite so I'll be playing the Beta in no time. Woo sah. Woo sah.

I know the cost of the new maps is not alot, but making them mandatory to purchase in order to play certain playlists seems like a slap in the face. The players shouldnt be forced to spend money to continue getting something they have had for 2 years now. If anything they should have created a new playlist and added the new maps into it, leaving the rest of the matchmaking system as is.

on a related note, i was playing split screen yesterday on live and my friend and i were repeatedly booted from games for betraying teammates even though we hadnt done anything this some new type of cheat that has surfaced? it happened in almost everygame we tried.

Ohhh... Ok.. for anyone who had the thing saying that they needed the new maps, but they had them, just redownload them. According to Bungie, you won't get charged a second time.

How so?
thats how it worked last time they released maps, which i am assuming you bought, which is why you had access to the playlists. Or you can wait til they're free.

The simple fact is bungie takes care of their own, and those people bought those maps ASAP.
If your really not that into halo 2, stop playing it. If foregoing that cheeseburger happy meal next time you eat, then maybe you should just find a new game.

simple thing is:
Bungie does not make more than 1 playlist, maybe they will for Halo 3, but until that day, you play the maps they say or don't play matchmaking.

I'd get on and play a 20 (pretty much across the board in all gametypes) I'm smack in the middle, and this update has affected me the most (right now)

As a 20, and since everyone is now a 1, I'm going to get the 30's I never had the dedication (nor the time to spend) to become one of, and the 1-10 crowd (the kids, and noobs mostly) that I did everything to avoid by going up in the ranks.

Screw it, I can wait 5 more days for my Halo fix. Or 1, if I'm one of the lucky ones that gets picked to play early on

I love Halo multiplayer. You know why? I don't play it, and I'm counting on Halo 2 and Halo 3 multiplayer to absorb all the cheaters and cheapass players so that Team Fortress is clean and fun.

Halo reminds me of Counter-Strike: Cheap, cheap players. Aggressive, noisy babies. Rotten sports, bad attitudes, and just plain jerks.

I'm counting on CS and Halo to keep all the aggressive "gotta win" jerks, and for TF to have the people who just want to have some fun for a little while.

I've been a PC gamer forever, just bought a 360 a month ago, playing Halo 2 (single player) for the first time... I've tried getting on multiplayer but it gives me the "don't have a map for the playlist" error.

On another topic I'm a total noob when it comes to console gaming, but I'm surprised to see that you have to pay for multiplayer maps. Huh? I've been playing counterstrike and Half Life Deathmatch forever, they add maps every now and then, all free. Same as Battlefield.

But then I've never understood why console games are more expensive than PC games either - Halo 2, which is like 3 years old, cost me $40. A 3 year old PC game would be in the bargain bin for $10!
