Wow, a few hours without Live just makes people kuh-razy. When Live goes down for maintenance, it doesn't take long for the intertubes to start compiling theories as to what that maintenance is for (or indeed, if it is even maintenance at all). If the headline didn't already tip you off, some are speculating that the Live maintenance is being performed in anticipation of the much awaited Halo 3 beta. What's more, some are speculating that the beta will release today after the maintenance is finished. But what's wild speculation without a little evidence to back it up, right?
MyArcadePlanet.com rounds up all the speculation in one convenient spot. Alright, it goes like this: the Xbox Live maintenance FAQ never specifically states what the purpose of the maintenance is. Of course, many would say that maintenance is an end in and of itself, but that ruins the fun. Some are speculating that the Live maintenance is to ready the Live servers for the stress created by thousands of Halo 3 beta testers downloading the beta at the same time. The other bits of evidence are just as tenuous, including a convoluted story about some Alpha tester's uncle (no joke) and historically important things that have happened on March 27th (like Marlon Brando refusing his Oscar). Finally, the article notes that Crackdown players have been prompted to download new content though there is nothing new available. Of course, this could be tardy Crackdown players just now seeing previously available content, but it's interesting nonetheless.
Is it true? The Live maintenance should be over by the time this post goes Live, which leaves 10 hours (Pacific Time) for the Halo 3 beta to release. We're not holding our breath.
1. That Would Be Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
