The day has finally come, and embargoed
Gears of War reviews are pouring onto the internet. In case you were wondering,
Gears of War is apparently the best damned thing since the discovery of fire. The reviews so far are universally good, with an average rating of 95 on Metacritic.
- 1UP (10/10) "...you really need to play this visual and visceral masterpiece for yourself. When you do, you'll find plenty of minor problems, just like I did...but you can always find reasons not to give a game a 10."
- Gamespot (9.6/10) "Gears of War is a game that capitalizes on all of the promises made by the next generation of gaming. It looks more than a few steps beyond what consoles have been doing to this point, and the gameplay is supremely fulfilling from start to finish in all of its various modes. While there have certainly been plenty of similar shooters before it, the game's great weapons, amazing graphics, and absolutely thrilling action make it stand out from the pack in a big, big way."
- IGN (9.4/10) "Even with the minor faults, Gears of War is easily a contender for game of the year. The graphics, sound and presentation are nearly unparalleled. The gameplay is phenomenal and you'd be hard pressed to find a more complete package. Gears of War has shown what Xbox 360 is capable of. Now it remains to be seen what other developers can do to keep up."
It should be noted that all of these reviews point to problems in the game. Most notably, they mention flawed enemy and squad AI, occasionally cumbersome controls, and very shallow multiplayer options, and yet, these universally acknowledged flaws are not enough to dip the score below 90%. We try to keep effusive, glowing praise out of our metareviews, but this game looks like it's shaping up to be the killer app it was always meant to be. Anyone lucky enough to get their copy yet? Tell us what you think.

I'm going to try a couple of stores today and hope I stumble upon it, but it looks like most places will have it tomorrow. I really can't wait, which is kind of funny since I've not paid much attention to the hype so far.

Looks like the game will only be available in Canada on the 9th, that's at least what the stores have been saying.

From some of the comments on CAG, it appears that most stores will be getting it in sometime this morning or afternoon and then selling it. I guess Circuit City stores have been saying 5 pm as when they should have them available.

I took a trip down to EB to pick up my GH2 preorder, asked about GoW and was told that it shipped today and would be sold tomorrow.

Everyone here in Charlotte (Best Buy, EBGames, Gamestop, Circuit City) says GoW will be out TOMORROW, 11/8.

If to subscribe to OXM or PSM magazines check for Circuit City coupons. You get a 15% coupon plus you get a free GOW faceplaces while supplies last. I'm picking up COD3 with a 10% coupon and get a $10 gift card. Also picking up NFS: Carbon with coupon for a $10 gift card. Going to use the two $10 gift cards to buy GOW with the 15% off coupon. :D

Predictably hyped, I thought Futureshop *might* have had it today, but they didn't. However if the game literally didn't start shipping out to everyone until last night / today, I can understand why many places don't have it yet. My local EB at the mall probably got it this afternoon ... they usually get things day #1 ... and I could have gotten it ... but that would have meant either preordering it (forget it) or having gone out, waited and hoped that my trip to the mall wasn't a waste of time. Been to the mall so much lately ... for wastes of time ... I don't wanna be there unless there's a purpose and the purpose is available for sale.
So now either I'm going to wait until Futureshop gets it in and get their free Outfit game deal with it or hope that Best Buy carries over their $99 CDN CoD3+GoW bundle deal at their online site. That would probably be the sweetest seeing as how I'm going to be getting both eventually anyways and even with shipping I'll save some money.

I just called my Boston EB (technically the Cambridgeside) and they told me to call back at 6pm for Gears preorders only.
I'm taking it as good news. Typically EB Games does whatever they can do to have you /not/ call back, so hopefully they're getting a shipment in today. Looks like I'll be playing this thing in a matter of hours. Wow.
So call your EB stores, guys. You may be making an evening run to the mall tonight too.
Richard- are you still playing with the idea of organizing a X360F tourney?

I was able to get a copy of GoW last night at a pre-release GoW party in Toronto. I completed the Act 1 on Co-op mode with Hardcore difficulty afterwards and let me say the whole mission did not dissapoint me. Co-op Act 1 took us little over 2 hours to complete, partner was a newb, and only once did I experience lag which lasted a split second, but was dissapointed that it actually happened.
At the pre-release party, I was able to play 4 vs 4 mode which gets pretty intense and the whole chainsaw scene seems a bit overpowering, but a great feeling once you've eliminated you're oponent with it.
Graphics are amazing, there's not much to complain on the visual side of things.
Weapons mixture is great, grenade throwing is an art itself, takes time to perfect in terms of the distance, it but eventually becomes natural.
There is a sniper gun to be found on certain levels, and it becomes a big threat if used at proper times, but like most other games, if your oponent gets too close, you can be sure your body will be shredded by the chainsaw.
A few long cut scenes, but can bypass by pressing the X button.
What really got to me is how the game actually puts you in an environment that you feel you are part of. I did not feel like I was playing a game, but was more living a moment when going through different missions and levels. It really captures you in the moment, which I never really felt in any other game out there. epic did a great job with this game.
All in all, the game did not dissapoint, I easily give the game a 9.5/10.
Enjoy!!

Glad to see that reviewers say it lives up to the hype, and glad to see its getting such good marks (as good, if not better, than Halo 2). I will definitely will be trying to see if I can pick up this game tomorrow when shops get it (which typically they ship games next-day air, so that's why it usually is in the shop a day after the ship date).
Been waiting for this game for a long, long time (before the Xbox 360 came out), so I am glad to see that its definitely far from a disappointment.

Both the EB Games and Gamestop in my area (North Atlanta Burbs) have said they are getting copies in today. I'm gonna try and pick one up on my way to vote. ;)

But who has played a game where the AI isn't flawed? AI doesn't sell games enough to get too much attention. From what I read GoW AI was above average.

I think F.E.A.R. pretty much sold on the enemy AI, which is reputed to be the best out there.
I can't wait to pick up GOW, hell even perforating stupid locusts looks pretty damn fun.

Crap! Just talked with GameStop and they told me that I can't pick up my copy of Gears until 7PM. I asked the guy why...and he said that GameStop corporate has mandated that they can only sell Gears beginning at 7PM!!!
I was pretty pissed. But of course no-one else has gears on the shelf yet...so I must patiently wait till 7PM.
