360 is fastest selling Aussie console ever

Hot on the heels of reports of lackluster 360 sales, Gamasutra is reporting that the Xbox 360 has officially become the fastest selling console in Australia. In its first seven months -- the 360 was released down under in March -- the 360 has gone to sell 100,000 units. This handily beats the PS2 total of 78,000 units in its first seven months. Also, Australians have purchased 400,000 games for their 360s since launch, trouncing the PS2 total of 198,000 during the same period after its launch. The regional director for Xbox Australia and New Zealand, David McLean, had this to say,

"Xbox 360 has taken off in Australia demonstrating that the game has changed and consumers are ready for the next-generation of gaming now. Xbox 360 provides amazing value for the whole family and with the biggest line-up of next-generation games and accessories, we are confident that there will be lots of Xbox 360s sitting under Christmas trees this year."

Of course, it's pretty easy to be confident when your largest competitor won't be launching in Australia until next year. So, do we have any happy Australian 360 owners out there? What do you think of all this?

1. As has been said multiple times, the Xbox 360 is not a disappointment but selling very well. Compared to the original Xbox its selling 50% more consoles each month in the US (and remember that the Xbox 1 sold for $200, double the price of the most popular Xbox 360 version)

The only reason why sales could be considered disappointing is that the total number of sales is less than the original Xbox, but that's only because of Microsoft's supply problems during their worldwide launch: there just weren't any 360s to buy for holiday shoppers while there were plenty of Xboxes in 2001. This gave the Xbox a headstart of 800,000 sold consoles, a difference the 360 is gobbling up with each passing month since it's currently outselling its predecessor every single month since the beginning of this year.

So the 360 is doing very well indeed. The Xbox 1 sold 24 million consoles in 4 years. If this momentum holds, the 360 will reach that number in two years.

2. I'm happy with the gameplay. It's just that mine is away getting fixed at the moment and so are alot of my mates. I don't want to pay $600 for something that's going to break on me. Once the warranty period ends i'll be spittin chips if it broke.

3. "The only reason why sales could be considered disappointing is that the total number of sales is less than the original Xbox,"

Well, no. The only reason why analysts consider sales disappointing is because they are tracking below what Microsoft projected for 2006,
and there are questions whether they will hit the 10 million units target Bill Gates claimed in May, before PS3 or Wii launch:

although the Xbox sales may be your personal measuring stick of the success for Xbox 360, its not what analysts are using. The original Xbox only sold 25 million or so units in five years, so obviously its not Microsoft's measuring stick either, if they hope to sell almost half that many Xbox360s in 1/5 the time.

4. @ ymmv

no i'm pretty sure that the first xbox debuted at $300. but, i could be wrong. i bought mine at $200 but that was after a while.

5. @Jeremy, The Xbox debuted at $300, the first price cut was only six months later. So the 360 is currently outselling the Xbox despite the higher price at the same point in time.

@GearsofWarcraft, good point. MS was hoping for 10 million consoles sold before the PS3/Wii launch but they will hit that number a month later.

6. Funny, while this is true, sales have slowed incredibly(some places halted) on xbox 360's, i asked our gameswizards, eb games and our major electronics stores(Harvey norman and DSE) and they have all said that the xbox 360 is barely selling now-and just look in any shop u aussies-there are heaps in stock.

7. I hope Microsoft enjoys it's Aussie 360 sales now, because once the PS3 is available there (and everywhere), those 360 sales will decline (again, there and everywhere) more rapidly than they already have. The beast that is Sony cannot be tamed!

Posted at 12:52PM on Oct 26th 2006 by PS3

8. Well, the "slow sales" are to be expected, because typically the biggest time for sales is during the holiday season. So I expect sales to shoot way up during November and December (especially when Gears of War and other titles come out). I am sure the untenable shortage of the PS3 this Christmas will help as well (during the Xbox 360 launch, there was no other choice for this generation of console. With the PS3, there will be, giving MS an edge).

9. Wow, impressive. I didn't know all u aussies were such gaming fanatics. G'day! Sorry to hear about the story of consoles needing repair. Hopefully (for its own sake and ours) MS will fix the problems permanently. I'm currently eyeing a 360 despite the PS3 coming close to launch. Price is a major factor. I've taken a look at the Wii, but have concluded with the lack of DVD functionality, it will be little more than a joke that's way too close to the 360 base in price, at about half its capabilities. I looked at 360 a (long) while ago and thought Kameo looked way cool on it. A second hand Gamecube sounds like a better value than a Wii! It looks like worldwide, it's all going to come down to 360 vs. PS3, MS vs. Sony.
