Somewhere over le Rainbow Six

New details on Rainbow Six: Vegas translated from a French gaming site:
  • In  the game you’ll be accompanied by two of three teammates who each have their own personality.
  • The completely new graphics-engine allows interactive and destroyable enviroments.
  • The game won’t waste any time on briefings, you’ll be dropped right into the action and hand out orders on the fly
  • There won’t be any med-kits to help you out, you’ll regain health when you rest a few seconds, just as in Halo and Perfect Dark
French-speakers please translate if there's anything else we should know.

1. Sounds like GRAW with a new set of paint to me.

2. it also says the teammates can communicate among themselves to establish strategic tactics...

3. interactive and destroyable environments." seems like every game promises this and then all you get to do is break windows... but only some windows. I hope they actually have real destroyable environments, because that is fun :)

4. I don't understand why they are stripping away the mission briefings. The death of the series might come if they continue to dumb it down until it's nothing more than a generic team-based shooter. As it is now, the consoles versions have already been watered down. You always control Ding Chavez and there's no pre-planning stage as seen in the computer counterparts - and now they are cutting out the mission briefing too?

I've always been more of a GhR fan myself. The original didn't have the 20 minute pre-planning stages like those found in Rogue Spear, but it gave you just enough control over your team's deployment and engagement rules. Knowing what you were supposed to do and where you were (as part of the mission briefing) was critical not just for gameplay sake, but it built sufficient atmosphere.

I'm all for non-linear gameplay where things can change from one moment to another and if that's what they are going for with the "on-the-fly" orders then that's cool. Just don't further sacrifice story and realism for a level of easier gamer acceptance. However seeing as how you'll regain health from just standing still... I have my doubts about the depth and realism at play here. What ever happened to being able to take two or three shots on the battlefield and it was all over?

Health packs could rightfully be considered a form of lazy game making nowadays, but in titles that demand a certain level of realism, I'd take a health pack over standing still to regain health any day. In futuristic games like Halo or PD, it's acceptable practice, but in R6 titles or CoD2? No thanks.

5. As I speak French, here is a precision:

point 1: "...who each have their own personality and they will be able to communicate between each other to establish tactical strategies."
