Earlier last week Famistu confirmed the console versions of Street Fighter IV would feature exclusive online play (shocking, no online for arcades? Joke.) and characters, two of which have been revealed to be Bruce Lee look-a-like Fei Long and SF inside joke, Dan.
This week Capcom has launched a new promotional website for Street Fighter IV. Offering the latest 'Epic' trailer and links to the blog for Street Fighter IV and the upcoming Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li movie, the site shows off little in the way of new content. Interestingly enough the site offers two pre-order methods for Street Fighter IV. One allows gamers to order directly from Capcom while the other is linked back to GameStop who is offering a collectible art book with purchase and lists a ship date of February 2, 2009. While the date may change, it give us a general idea of when to expect the anticipated fighter.
A few days ago we reported a rumor that cited Street Fighter IV as an upcoming Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release--well they are rumors-no-more. Last night Capcom confirmed [via IGN] that the 2/3D fighter hybrid will land on next generation consoles as well as Windows-based PCs, continuing the company's recent support of the platform (as in Devil May Cry4 and Lost Planet PC releases). More details regarding the title is expected at the upcoming Captivate08 event in Las Vegas. Press email after the jump.
Rumor has it that Capcom accidentally revealed the release schedule and platforms for the upcoming, official, fourth installment of Street Fighter. According to a story on French gaming site Jeuxvideo, Capcom inadvertently let the information slip on a press site that scheduled the 2/3D fighter hybrid for a winter release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
While the general consensus is that Street Fighter IV would make its way to next-gen platforms, a PC release is a surprise. While we could speculate that the rumor has weight due to Capcom's recent admiration for the PC platform (with Devil May Cry 4 and Lost Planet releases), the well-known similarities in development for Xbox 360 and PC titles and USB being the primary input on all next-gen controllers, we're going to remind everything this one is just a rumor for now.
On a side note, with the popularity of the Cybercafé in the Eastern market a PC release would make sense. Just saying!
Okay, we'll fess up to it. This Mega64 video isn't exactly 360 related. However, we'll defend ourselves by saying that it is related to Street Fighter several iterations of which will soon be found on the Xbox 360. Beyond that, it's just really funny. Stupid, but funny. We'd love to say more, but that would honestly be spoiling it. So, enjoy. Oh, and if by some bizarre chance you don't get the reference, we've embedded an educational video after the break.
A few days ago Capcom shot out these fresh screens of El Fuerte, one of the newest characters in the upcoming Street Fighter 4. Included in the screens, that guest star an unfortunate Zangief getting taken to town, are the Guile and Blanka environments which mighty pretty, in a heavy UDON ink kinda way. Some of the shots look interesting and while we're optimistic for the fighter, we wonder how hardcore fans are taking the over-the-top antics of the characters (ie. Zangief's expression in the above image.) Hardcore? Let us know what you think about these shots and your overall impression of the upcoming fourth installment.
With the risk of sounding mean, Japanese companies rarely pay attention to their audience. At one point Sony execs refused to believe in social gaming and Nintendo thought online play was a fad but thankfully that mentality is changing. One company inparticular is attempting to reach out to gamers, in this age of social media, and that company is Capcom. Recent announcements make us think that Capcom's latest mission statement is to focus on community feedback. With polling consumers for the price-point of Bionic Commando: Rearmed and allowing gamers to beta test the hottly anticipated Street Fighter II HD Remix (SSFIITHDR that is), Capcom's focus is pointed at what their fans want and think. It's a refreshing approach and gamers are taking notice.
Today we noticed the insane amount of footage that came out of Capcom's recent event, Capcom Digital Day. At the event Capcom showcased the upcoming pseudo-expansion Lost Planet Colonies and their upcoming library of XBLA releases. While Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix were all known quantities, Capcom also showed of the HD remake of the classic top-down shooter 1942 which was recently announced.
Jump in for a breakdown of each of the XBLA games and a ton of video starting with the title Street Fighter fans will be clawing all over, for the beta that is, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3.
Street Fighter fans put away those shiny pennies in an effort to purchase a PlayStation 3. Game producer, Rey Jimenez, put fears of a "gimped" Xbox 360 version of the upcoming Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix to rest with the latest blog post on Capcom's official site. "I can officially say that the filesize will not be an issue," Jimenez said. "With great help from the guys at Microsoft, we will be able to offer the same features on both platforms to the same quality as each other. To use the term I've been reading on the forums, neither console version will be "gimped" due to any kind of limitation."
All we can say is phew. This news comes at a perfect time for fans of the series who have recently been told about a beta test program that will be rolling out this Spring. The last thing we can hope for is that the "compression ninjas" at Microsoft will help with that Bionic Commando: Rearmedissue as well.
When the Halo 3 beta was announced gamers were perplexed at the notion that they'd only be able to enjoy online Halo-hyjinx if they threw down the money for Crackdown. Eventually the "Halo 3 beta with a free copy of Crackdown" jokes out when Crackdown turned out to be a solid title. While we didn't think anyone would be brave enough to force another purchase on us in hopes to test an anticipated title, we were wrong.
Today GameSpot is reporting that Capcom has outlined plans to follow in Microsoft's shoes by offering a free beta key for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix to gold Xbox Live members who purchase, the recently renamed, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. Upon spending 800 MS Points ($10) for Commando 3, eligible gamers will be able to take part in the stress test for approximately eight-weeks with access to two classic characters, Ryu and Ken.
The test is scheduled to begin shortly after the release of Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, which hits this Spring. According to Capcom, tests are required to test latency issues for the upcoming XBLA fighting game. Based on Capcom's past of online fighting issues, we think this test is warranted.
In our continuing effort to bring you fresh and interesting content, X3F presents Would You Rather ... a weekly feature that asks you the hard questions. The point? If you had to choose one or the other, which would you go for?
It's undeniable. The Street Fighter flu has been swirling around Fanboy Towers since the first hi-res shots of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (seriously, long enough?) has been shown. Since then, Street Fighter 4 has been all the rage putting our original temptation in the shadows. For the sake of this week's installment of WUR let's pretend you could only have one of the two. Would you go new hotness (SF4) or retro remix (SSFIITHDR, sheesh)?
Can't decide, you say? Shoryuken! (Can't take credit for this lame joke)
Last week we got a glimpse of the new Street Fighter IV character and wondered how he'd fight, this week we get to see him do so. This new promotional video of the game shows of all of the revealed characters and plenty of gameplay. The jury is still out for us on a few minor details (moving of camera, certain specifics of character design, etc) but all in all it looks really good. The gameplay clips show some returning moves and show us some never before seen combo footage, though you do need to be quick to spot it as it's only there for a few seconds before the special move. With the game releasing in late summer to Japanese arcades, we could see this at about this time next year, or even earlier if we're lucky.
Packaging together 1080p sized graphics and two sets of fighting music into one Xbox Live Arcade game is beginning to become a problem for Capcom as development on Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix churns along.
According to an interview with director David Sirlin about their development struggles, videogamer.com learned that the XBLA's 150mb limit is becoming a thorn in SSF2THDR's development side. Specifically, the 1080p graphics are taking up a lot of space and, since SSF2THDR is releasing to the PSN, 1080p was decided to be the native resolution. Which brings us to the question whether or not the XBLA and PSN versions will end up being different. Capcom isn't saying anything just yet, but it's possible that some of the sprites or background graphics will have to be downgraded to 720p or the game's remixed music score may get cut. But we have high hopes. Let Microsoft's team of compression technology masters go to work on SSF2THDR and when they get done you could fit SSF2THDR on a 3.5" floppy. They're like magical compression fairies.
Following a little artwork leakage, the Capcom Blog has lifted the curtain on the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix creative process by showing off some of their art assets.
Producer Rey Jimenez posted a bundle of two month old SSFIITHDR artwork assets to show how the art process is moving ahead and some of the challenges they're facing. The artwork can be downloaded in PSD form here (zipped up) and shows each fighter's art in various stages of development. In his blog post Jimenez also uses art samples to illustrate what changes have yet to be made and how their quality control works. So, give the art a download and be the little nit picky QA grinch you've always wanted to be, but remember that this is all work-in-progress stuff ... be tough though.
New screenshots from (deep breath) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix were posted on the Capcom Digital blog yesterday, showing off what we can expect in terms of visuals. These three (plus one off-screen) screenshots are work-in-progress (something Capcom is quite adamant at pointing out) showing off a few of the sprites we've grown to love and a few environments too. It really looks like they've taken classic Street Fighter, cleaned it up, put a new pair of jeans on it and brushed its hair, because it's looking darn spiffy. Check out all three work-in-progress screens in the gallery below and be sure to make the jump for developer commentary. And before you get riled up into a tizzy, the character selection screen's map dots are not accurate. Good catch though.
A while back, the Capcom crew asked the Street Fighter community to come up with achievement suggestions for upcoming XBLA game Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. And now, after looking through all the suggestions and asking the development team which ones were feasible, they've narrowed it down to seven possible achievements and want you to vote on which one should make it into the game.
All of the suggested achievements are somewhat difficult to obtain, but our favorites have to be "Win with every character in an Online Ranked Match" and the "Defeat Sagat with Ryu's fierce dragon punch (any mode)" achievement which is currently winning in the polls. Speaking of polls, you should vote on which SSFIITHDR achievement should make it into the game by registering and submitting your ballot over at the Capcom forums. And please, try not leaving any hanging paper chads.
