Netflix adds Starz and more to streaming library

In preparation for the Fall release of the Netflix streaming enabled New Xbox Experience, Netflix just announced that they're adding additional content to their streaming library including a boatload of content from Starz.

Come this Fall, Netflix will add an additional 2,500 pieces of content for streaming (that's 30,000 pieces of content in total), including movies from Starz Play like Spider-Man 3, Ratatouille, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Superbad, and No Country for Old Men. You'll need an unlimited subscription plan to have access to all the Netflix goodies when the NXE releases and, just to whet your appetite, 1,000 hunks of new content are available TODAY with the other 1,500 being added by the time the NXE launches. Happy days!

Video: Netflix on the Xbox 360 demoed

Curious to see how Netflix on the Xbox 360 works? If so, check out one of Major Nelson's latest Inside Xbox video features showing off the new movie watching functionality. Watch in awe at the seamless integration between the 360's dashboard and the queue, as standard defintion video enjoyment is streamed to the console in quite a technologically interesting process. View the vid and make sure you have a Netflix account come this Fall, because after viewing this demo, you'll more than likely be interested.

E308: More details about Netflix on the Xbox 360

Chatting with Marc Whitten and the entire Xbox 360 team at today's Community Briefing (more Community Briefing details will be coming later today), we were treated to a demo of the Netflix Xbox 360 service and how it works. Specifically, we were shown how the queuing system will be integrated and really, it's rather a straightforward process that utilizes

First, to connect one's Netflix account to their Xbox Live account, customers will enter a keycode via that'll link the two accounts together. Then, once linked, the queue will instantly appear on the Xbox 360 allowing instant access to the movies. Want to change your movie queue? Simply update your movie queue online and within' 10 seconds, your Xbox 360's Netflix list will update. A very slick process indeed.

Other Netflix details we were able to learn from the Community Briefing was confirmation that only SD videos would be offered and streamed to the console (not downloaded) as the system analyzes which bitrate is the best fit for your connection. Up to eight friends can watch a movie together BUT they all must be Netflix subscribers. Finally, we were informed that Netflix's servers would handle all movie streaming and that they'll significantly upgrade their infrastructure before the Fall release.

E308: Netflix on 360

It's been rumored before, but now it's confirmed. And in a big way, see there no extra cost for live members to watch Netflix movies via the digital distribution of XBLM. Additionally, the Netflix movies that are downloaded can be shared via the aforementioned party system. While the details were a bit scarce, the news that XBLM has as big a partner as Netflix is great start.

Why wait? Application allows Netflix to Xbox 360 streaming

With rampant internet speculation calling a Netflix Xbox 360 portal a possible dashboard feature addition, one group of programmers has decided waiting is for suckers. Using a Media Center based PC, a Netflix account and an Xbox 360 an application has been developed to stream the video service to our favorite console. While unsanctioned, the application does work (horribly slowly that is) and makes us wish the Netflix rumor would become a reality. Take a look at the application running after the jump and tell us if a Netflix portal on Xbox 360 is something you'd want for Microsoft's console.

Analyst speculates Netflix's Xbox 360 partnership

One of our favorite analysts, Wedbush Morgan Securities' own Michael Pachter is shoveling coal into the Netflix / Xbox 360 partnership rumor train, speculating that their partnership is real and a deal has already been signed.

Pachter speculates that Netflix has already partnered with Microsoft to offer movie rentals through the Xbox 360 based on comments made by Netflix's management during their recent analyst event. During the conference, Netflix management mentioned interest in "internet-enabled video game consoles" which Pachter believes is not only a hint that Microsoft and Netflix will partner, but that it's actually a good move for both companies. "The competitive advantage of such an alliance is clear: Netflix customers who are Xbox Live members will have the ability to stream online content through their Xbox 360s directly to their televisions" says Pachter. "The ability to do so is available without the Xbox 360, but requires a measure of technological sophistication and a high tolerance for failure." Can you say IN-TER-EST-ING?

Rumor: Netflix's new partnerships to include the 360

In news that's heavily saturated in rumor oil (trans fat free though, don't worry) and is probably a huge stretch even for a rumor, Netflix recently announced that they've entered into three new partnerships that will "let subscribers watch films streamed directly from the Web to TVs". Three new partnerships that are all said to be with major companies. Three new partnerships that they are keeping secret and will announce soon. You see where we're going with this?

It has been no secret that Netflix has been kicking around the idea of using the Xbox 360 to grow its subscription service and their announcement of three new partnerships could ultimately lead to Microsoft being one. But, like we said, this is a huge stretch. Microsoft already has a lot invested in the current Video Marketplace setup and the addition of Netflix would throw a huge wrench into things. That is unless there's piles of cash to be made ... so, maybe?

Netflix confirms Xbox 360 surveys

Just over a month ago, it came to light that online movie rental behemoth Netflix was surveying its customers about the possibility of streaming movies to their Xbox 360s. Fast forward to March 2008 (i.e. now) and Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey has confirmed the existence of the survey and thrown a little more fuel onto the speculation fire. Specifically, Swasey did not confirm whether or not there is a pending deal between Microsoft and Netflix to provide a movie streaming service, but he did say that the company wants consumers to obtain its movies "in as many ways as possible."

While the Xbox Live Marketplace already offers individual movie rentals, a subscription service -- presumably one in which users could watch as many movies as they could stomach for a flat monthly fee -- would certainly be a welcome addition. Who knows, the Spring Update is right around the corner after all ....

Rumor: Netflix set to bring rental service to the 360

Our current Video Marketplace setup is decent enough allowing Xbox 360 owners to rent movies or purchase television shows a la carte. But think how much better the XBVM service could be if an already popular unlimited movie rental service like, say Netflix, were to be incorporated? Well, that may just happen.

According to Seanbajuice, a random Netflix survey (which was sent out to a select few Netflix subscribers) asks specific questions regarding how likely it would be for one to support Netflix being integrated into the Xbox 360. The survey points out that no additional subscription fees would be required (though, a one time $3 disc purchase may be necessary) and would give unlimited viewing access to Netflix's entire movie and television library streamed straight through your 360. The survey is just a survey, so this is far from being official, but how could anyone be against such a partnership? Heck, if this Netflix / Xbox 360 service ends up becoming a reality, we'd suddenly let go of any negative sentiment we felt towards Netflix for abandoning HD DVD. Our hearts heal fast.
