Rumor: Cable to transfer HDD data to Elite 360

True, the rumored black Xbox 360 Elite has yet to be officially confirmed, but we figured we'd add some more rumor logs onto our fanboy fire. Yesterday, Ben over at ars technica expressed his concern for how to transfer HDD data from his old 360 to the new Elite 360 if he were to purchase one. Not soon after Ben received a tip from a person who works at a large video game distributor (who wanted to remain anonymous) and divulged an answer to the data transfer problem ... an included cable. The tipster went on to say that,

"MS has told us that the data will be transferred via some sort of cable that will be included with the unit. The cable will also be included w/ the 120GB drive that will be sold separately (price TBD)."

Again, this is a whole basket full of rumor berries, but if it were true would it sway your opinion on a new Elite 360 purchase? A HDD to HDD data transfer cable would be a great accessory anyway and with the release of a 120GB HDD one would think it'd be a no brainer. Or maybe we're all just geniuses.

XBLM movie and TV download gaining ground [update 1]

Update: Editor's note: this post is a duplicate of another story written earlier. Xbox 360 Fanboy apologizes for this error. We have turned off comments and ask that you direct them to the original post here.

The fine folks over at ars technica are reporting that that movie and TV industries are embracing the idea of offering digital content via the Xbox Live Marketplace. In the article they compare the movie downloading services of Amazon's Unbox, CinemaNow, Movielink and the XBLM. Though no official data has been released, it turns out the XBLM is not only leading the pack in terms of studio interest, but overall interest from consumers. The 360 offers two unique advantages that the other competitors can't offer: bypassing a computer and directly playing content on your home television, and that HD content is easily accessible for HD hungry consumers. A very interesting read that analyzes the current market for downloadable movies/TV and where it's headed in the coming year.

As you know we haven't dived into the movie/TV purchasing service, but if you have, what are your impressions? Do you love it or just love to hate it?

Japanese Lost Planet bundle with HDMI? [update 1]

Crafty users over at NEOGaf spotted something interesting on Japan's Lost Planet 360 bundle. The list of contents on the back of the box show that an HDMI cable is cable is included with the bundle. Microsoft has said in the past that HDMI is unnecessary for high definition games, or that too few people have HDMI capable TVs, so this could be an interesting turn of events. Also, it would mesh well with rumors of the cable's imminent release.

Of course, it's always possible that this is merely a printing mistake. For instance, the front of the box (image here) notes that the bundle includes normal "HD AV" cables, which are found in American Premium bundles, too. Did some punch-drunk graphic designer accidentally type the wrong letters, or is Microsoft finally taking the HDMI plunge?

Update: It looks like Microsoft has officially shot this down. According to IGN, the HDMI reference on the back of the box was a typo. Shucks.

100GB HD at X06 Korea confirmed fake

In a crushing blow to people who believe everything they see on the internet, German-language blog Xbox-Archiv.de reports (crappy English web translation here) that Microsoft Senior Product Manager Boris Schneider-Johne confirmed the 100GB 360 hard drive supposedly pictured at X06 Korea is a photo-shopped fake. According to Boris, there was no such product announcement. Additionally, Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb told our own Richard Mitchell that the 100GB tale "looks like fiction" to him. This should clear up the confusion resulting from conflicting reports on the veracity of this story.

Wireless networking tips for HD streaming

Jake Ludington has a post up detailing the method he used to get HD video streaming wirelessly, without interruptions. His method involves using two routers to isolate the connection between the Media Center PC and the Xbox 360:

"Each wireless access point creates the equivalent of a single wired connection to your router. The more computers you connect to a single access point, the more you fill up the available connection, potentially resulting in an overloaded connection. By putting the Xbox 360 on it's own access point, you are providing the full capacity of that access point's available bandwidth."

It apparently works for him; he's streaming 1080p HD content "without any hiccups." Showoff.

[Thanks, Jake]
