Zero Punctuation visits Liberty City

Yahtzee's latest Zero Punctuation review this week is none other than everyone's favorite crime simulator, Grand Theft Auto IV. While he (of course) does his best to pick the game's fault apart one by one, Yahtzee still comes across as actually liking the game. Fans of ZP will know that this is high praise indeed (though we imagine it will still spark nasty, hate-filled emails from GTA fanboys). As for the negatives, the review makes note of wonky driving, escort missions, and the constant need to entertain Niko's friends. Beyond such criticisms though, the review deigns to call Grand Theft Auto IV "really good." Find the review embedded after the break.

GTAIV boasts 40% attach rate with new 360s

Grand Theft Auto IV is selling very well (perhaps you've heard), but did you know that it's also moving Xbox 360s at a blistering pace? On a recent Major Nelson podcast, co-host "e" revealed that GTAIV boasted a 40% attach rate with new 360s during its first week of availability. "The game is attaching well to new consoles, roughly 40 percent of 360s going out the door had a copy of GTA IV going with them," said 'e'. With only the UK sales numbers for GTAIV currently revealed, we'll have to wait for the worldwide 360 numbers before the full significance of the attach rate really means. Whatever the actual figure, we're willing to bet that 40% of all 360 copies of GTAIV represents a lot of consoles.

While there's no way to prove that consumers bought their new consoles specifically to play GTAIV, there's no denying that it helped drive sales. We'll have to wait for the latest NPD numbers to see just how big the GTAIV effect was.

What They Play tours parents through Liberty City

Two weeks later and it seems Grand Theft Auto IV has yet to lose its luster.

What They Play has become a well known source of information for parents that strive to involve themselves in their children's favorite hobby. While the site has been an important voice against gaming detractors for some time, its cause has become even more relevant since the release of Rockstar's epic journey and subsequent tar & feathering.

In a continuing series of written facts and video examples, What They Play has compiled everything parents will need to examine before they allow their children near GTA IV. Videos outlining the extent of gunplay, language and sexual content found in the game are a handful of examples that can be found on the parent focused website.

While the feature and site has proven to be an important source of information, we hope the future of What They Play includes expanding into other languages to keep the parental knowledge base on an even "playing field" across the globe.

GTAIV: Mainstream reaction roundup

With all the controversy surrounding anything even resembling violence or sexual content in games taking over news networks we felt it was time to round it all up for your viewing disgust pleasure. Have you ever heard the expression, "taking your cake and eating it too?" Watch as networks and talking heads die to portray any resemblance of pop-culture understanding, ironically alienating a segment of their current and future viewers, by grasping at straws to the content in Grand Theft Auto IV then cutting to commercial break, post fear-mongering, for a quick cash out.

There's violence and criminal activity in Grand Theft Auto? Who knew?! You know, other than anyone who can read the title that is. Sexual content? Yes. No argument there. However, watching the spin added to the optional sexual material included in the game makes us wonder what happened to investigative reporters.

If we made a claim here and were wrong our readers call us on it, but time and time again "respectable" reporters from mainstream networks get away with shoveling countless false claims against the gaming industry.

Much like GTAIV's own radio news network, the whole thing is a giant joke. Jump in for some choice selections of news links and video clips revolving around GTAIV.

CNN's Beck 'could care less' about games, bloggers are 'losers'

Glenn Beck, host of CNN's The Glenn Beck Program, has added his name to the list of concerned citizens against the violence and sexual content found in Grand Theft Auto IV. In a recent interview with Dr. Cheryl Olson, co-author of Grand Theft Childhood, Beck lashed out with indifference toward gaming and then proceeded to 'dis' bloggers.

"I will tell you that all these video gamers ... they're bloggers, as well as video gamers - they're writing all kinds of stuff about me [that] I'm the enemy now of video gamers. I could care less about video games. Video game bloggers? They're losers ..."

For someone who could care less about gaming he sure does have his share of opinions on the subject. Watch as Beck wastes Dr. Olson's time by ranting about his personal life as an internet joke when he realizes the good doctor wouldn't be able to add to his sound-byte reel of uninformed gaming hatred.

Our favorite part? Beck cashing in on the Grand Theft Auto IV hatred for ratings and advertising dollars and then proceed to accuse the 'game industry' of giving GTAIV an M-Rating purely for monetary reasons. Say it with us now. Irony.

Take-Two sues the Chicago Transit Authority

Take-Two Interactive has filed suit against the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) in a Manhattan federal court on Monday for pulling ads that promoted the controversial game, Grand Theft Auto IV, without explanation. Take-Two Interactive alleges the CTA has violated its free speech and contractual rights, saying it pulled its posters within days of the ads first appearing on April 22.

In the filing Take-Two accused the CTA and its sales agent, Titan Outdoor LLC, of violating a $300,000 campaign agreement that included running Grand Theft Auto IV promotional advertisements on buses and at bus stops throughout the Chicago area, which were scheduled for display for six weeks between April and June.

The advertisements were pulled after a Fox News affiliate questioned the CTA's priorities of promoting the controversial title during a surge of violent crime in the city of Chicago.

Take-Two seeks an order for the transit authority to run the ads as well as monetary damages of at least $300,000.

GTAIV carjacks top spot on Xbox Live

Well that didn't take long. Major Nelson has posted the most recent Xbox Live activity top ten. As predicted, Grand Theft Auto IV has (appropriately) stolen the top spot from Call of Duty 4. It would be interesting to find out the percentage of players playing multiplayer versus those that are sticking to the single-player campaign. Regardless, given the amount of content there is to discover in GTAIV, it's likely that it will remain at number one for quite some time. The question now is what game has the power to knock it down. The only thing that comes to mind is (Game of the Year 2008) Ninja Gaiden II. As much as we know Ryu could probably take Niko one-on-one, we're not sure his game has the strength to topple GTAIV.

GTAIV cheat codes surface [Update]

Update: Comments for this story confirm that using some of these cheats will not allow you to unlock certain achievements.

Having a tough time getting your revenge on in Liberty City? Thankfully Game Trailers user GhettoChild discovered the cheat codes in Grand Theft Auto IV for everything from restoring health to spawning an Annihilator helicopter. Using the in-game cell phone you dial the phone numbers to activate the code. While we haven't been able to confirm it, we assume using any cheats will no longer allow you to unlock any achievements and based on Rockstar's past with using codes, you may be unable to watch the final cinematic in the game.

Don't say we didn't warn you. Codes after the jump.

[Thanks, Chris]

EB Canada offers full value for select GTAIV trades

Canadian gamers who purchased their copy of Grand Theft Auto IV at any EB Games midnight launch are in for a treat. According to a flyer distributed during launch events, gamers who trade-in Grand Theft Auto IV with proof of original purchase from any EB Games midnight event will receive a trade credit of up to $59.99 until May 13.

We anticipate that EB Games assumes most people will hang onto GTAIV and this deal is structured to entice some people, without flooding their inventory due to the recent release of the game itself. This deal is similar to another promotion EB Games has been waiting to run for Haze and is in line with another failed promotion, the dollar-a-day trade program at select stores.

Will you hand over your copy of GTAIV for $59.99? What would you buy with the credit anyway? Actually, we hear GTAIV is out, maybe you should use the credit for that.

Greenberg: GTAIV could steal top Live spot

Is it all that surprising? Xbox 360 director of product management (and all around snappy dresser) Aaron Greenberg told Reuters that it wouldn't be surprising to see Grand Theft Auto IV snag the top position on Xbox Live. While most Xbox Live gamers know that shooters like Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 are generally the major competitors for the number one slot on Xbox Live, Greenberg said of GTAIV, "The multiplayer in this game is so well implemented that I can't imagine anyone owning a copy without trying to play it on Xbox Live." Greenberg is probably right about that. After all, he forecasts (correctly, we'd guess) that GTAIV will be the highest selling game of 2008, so there will certainly be plenty of players ready to go online. The question is whether or not players will continue to play once they've given multiplayer a try.

Will GTAIV take the top spot? We're going to go out on a limb and say yes. Will it stay? We'll have to wait and see.

IGN yanks GTAIV hooker sex, killing video

Up until last night IGN had a feature video dedicated to scenes that depicted GTAIV lead character, Niko Bellic, performing sexual acts and murdering prostitutes online. After questioning the validity of such a video from MTV Multiplayer Blog lead Stephen Totilo, and bringing up the video with a contact at Fox; who owns IGN, the video was removed from IGN's site.

"IGN's goal is to show our users all aspects of popular games on the market," an IGN spokesperson told Totilo. "In this case, we crossed a line in how we portrayed some aspects of the game and we've taken this video down."

The video begins with a montage of pole-dancing and lap-dancing and then spirals into violence with multiple shootings of scantily-clad women by Bellic.

Forgetting that such a specifically focused look at that small, and optional, portion of the game was featured in such a way and the irony of a Fox owned outlet creating and releasing the video, we're left wondering what the point was. Doesn't creating a feature that only looks at such a controversial part of GTAIV fuel the fire for Rockstar naysayers? Well, at least we know which video we're likely to see when Fox News tackles the content of Grand Theft Auto IV.

GTAIV box art, Etch-a-Sketched

We love the trend of games getting everyone creative with art and custom content and here's another great piece. The Etch-A-Sketchist is at it again, this time recreating the GTAIV cover art with his handy travel companion. It's a shame the art has already been shaken clean off the unit but this photo is a good reminder of the creativity that is inspired by gaming. Seriously though, we couldn't even draw a circle on the Etch-A-Sketch, so this is crazy!

Behold: the GTAIV Special Edition unboxing

We realize that many, many Grand Theft Auto fans have already perused the contents of their shiny, new Special Editions of Grand Theft Auto IV -- which includes an actual safety deposit box, among other things -- but there are also plenty of gamers out there who opted to grab the vanilla edition instead. It is with this in mind that we point you to 360Sync's unboxing of the Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition (it's the Canadian version -- note the "Édition spéciale"). Grab your smoking jacket, pour the Courvoisier, and savor the images.

Joystiq Network poll: GTAIV causing problems?

Amidst reports that Grand Theft Auto IV is causing problems for owners of both the 360 and PS3 version, we'd like to poll our community on the subject. Most reports claim that the game freezes, forcing players to restart the game (reports also suggest that models other than the 60GB PS3 are not affected). Thus far, only one X3F blogger (me) has encountered any issues. When attempting to retry a mission, said blogger was greeted with an unending loading screen and forced to shut off the console.

We've set up a network wide poll that will be shared among Joystiq, PS3 Fanboy, and Xbox 360 Fanboy to get an idea of how widespread the problem is. Let us know if you've had any issues and don't forget to detail your problems in the comments.

Are you having problems with Grand Theft Auto IV?
Yes, and I use the Xbox 360
