Connect360 3.2 now streams DivX / Xvid for Mac

Connect360 -- software that allows gamers to stream video, music, and movies from their Mac to their 360 -- has been updated to accommodate the new codecs introduced in the recent Fall Update. In other words, Connect360 3.2 will allow anyone to stream DivX or Xvid right to their television. The full application will run you $20, though the update is free to existing users. We haven't tried it out ourselves, but our cantankerous controllers over at Joystiq claim that the app outperforms Microsoft's official Windows streaming. Anyone else out there care to testify?

Rumor: 360 DivX support to be a Fall feature

During a recent earnings report presentation, DivX CEO Kevin Hell might have revealed a bit too much regarding DivX support on the Xbox 360.

JP Morgan analyst Paul Coster asked Hell about DivX support that was added to Microsoft's Media Extender and if that foreshadowed a release to the Xbox 360. Hell's response was an enthusiastic "Yes!" followed by a semi-awkward, backpedaling clarification that went something like ... "that, uh, we're in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can't go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time."

His response may not sound like confirmation of DivX headed to the 360, but simply reading the quote doesn't paint the whole picture. According to those who attended the conference, it was how he answered the question thta was most revealing. Hell was very enthusiastic at first when he answered "Yes!" and then he quickly tried to backpedal and change the subject. Was it a slip of the tongue or a simple misunderstanding? No one is certain, but we wouldn't be surprised to see DivX support added to the 360 this December.

Another petition for Divx / Xvid support

Normally these petition efforts collapse under the crushing weight of futility, but this one, demanding Divx / Xvid support, already has over 3200 signatures.

Apps for streaming DivX on 360

As you may know, the Xbox 360's streaming capabilities do not support DivX / Xvid out of the box, to the severe annoyance of many people (Actually to the annoyance of 2195 people). Fortunately, there are a couple  apps out  there  that solve the problem by converting  DivX to WMV on the fly. Of course, you still need Windows Media Center.

MCE Video Encoder has the following features:
  • Start and Stop Streaming from Windows Client and MCE Add-in,
  • Pause and Unpause Streaming from Windows Client and MCE Add-in,
  • Rewind and Fast Forward the Streaming (by configurable amount) from Windows Client and MCE Add-in,
  • Play the stream from MCE Add-in,
  • View Progress of video encoding in Windows Client, and
  • Remote control MCE Video Encoder through Windows Messages and/or Command Files.
  • Transcode 360 (also supports Quicktime and Real Media Video) has been around since early February and is getting great reviews. If you try either one, report back with your experience / comparison.

Still seems like a hassle to me. This is one of those non-piracy related areas where a modded Xbox w/XBMC truly pwns the 360. Question for those with WMC: Are you using the  Xbox 360's limited streaming capabilities regularly, or are you too busy playing  GRAW like the rest of us?

    [Thanks Jake]

DivX streaming solution for 360 using MCE

Last time we heard from Casey at brains-N-brawn he had written a Media Center AddIn to control Windows Media Center with the wired Xbox 360 controller. Now he's back at it, crafting together a solution to get your DivX or XviD files to play through your MCE on the Xbox 360. He's quick to point out this is a software solution, and not a mod. "This is not a mod solution or an xbox 360 hack. this works purely using the extensibility points of Media Center and freely available tools from MS. i.e. no warranties will be voided. and when Vista MCE comes out, we'll be able to radically improve this."

The system works by transcoding, in realtime, your non-compatible formats into Windows Media files on a Media Center PC, making them readable by the 360. A clever solution to a problem that Microsoft insists doesn't exist. I'm sure I'm not the only one who was glad to see a solution was discovered that didn't involve all kinds of h4x0ring; Microsoft's Major Nelson even acknowledged it, calling it a "hacky way of doing it." I'm pretty sure that means "clever as a bag of ferrets."

    [Thanks, Casey and Jake]
