COD4 beta: no more first come, first serve

The Community manager for Infinity Ward, known by the masses as fourzerotwo, has posted an update on his blog concerning the complete hysteria surrounding the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta. It seems that Infinity Ward was promised by the company that maintains their web servers that the site would not crash again as it has so often has during the beta sign up process. Obviously, the repeated crashes deprived many gamers of their chance to get in on the beta, so Infinity Ward is doing something about it.

So, here's the upshot of all this: Infinity Ward is doing away with first come, first serve registration. As soon as the beta site goes live again, they will be implementing open registration for 24 hours. The exact method in which this will be done hasn't been specified yet, but fourzerotwo assures us that everyone will have an equal chance to register for the beta when all is said and done. Keep an eye on fourzerotwo's blog for updates.

[Thanks, Josh]

Call of Duty 4 drops November 5

Activision has announced that Call of Duty 4, the highly anticipated FPS from Infinity Ward, will be hitting retails shelves this November. To be specific, the game will be landing on the 5th of November. Forsaking the franchise's World War II past, COD4 brings the series into modern times, hence the subtitle, Modern Warfare. If, by chance, you can't stand the thought of waiting until November to get in on the modernized fragfest, you might consider signing up for the multiplayer beta lottery that's going on right now.

In the meantime, um, just be sure that you "remember, remember the 5th of November."

(Sorry.)

Register for the COD4 beta today, play tonight

We said Call of Duty 4 beta details would be coming soon, but we didn't realize it would be this soon. In a late night forum post by Jason West, Studio Head of Infinity Ward, it was announced that early sign up for the beta will begin today at 5PM PT. For those of you keeping score, that's about six hours from now. Furthermore, the post announces that those who make it into the early sign up could be playing as early as tonight. You know, tonight, as in this evening. Finally, the post announces that the beta will be rolled out in waves, with more people being added over time. So, if you don't make it in today, hold tight, as more players will be added every day.

Keep your eye on CharlieOscarDelta.com for details.

CoD 4 beta countdown begins this week

Up on the official Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare website, developer Infinity Ward has posted an update regarding registration into the super-duper highly anticipated multiplayer beta. The update states that there will be a countdown clock going up later in the week counting down to the first wave of registration into the beta and the good news is that they promise the counter will a short one. Reading between the lines a bit, we're betting that by this Saturday there will be some sort of registration opening or an official date confirmation at the very least. We'll keep our eyes peeled for more CoD 4: MP Beta details if you keep yours open too. And don't forget to stick to the facts kids, stick to the facts.

[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

Update: Ran ugly text gap through beautification machine.

COD4 beta listing clarified, coming "soon"

A listing on the Xbox Live Marketplace ticker for the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta set the internetz on fire earlier today. The listing, you see, has the date "8/17" tattooed onto it very clearly. The folks at 2old2play caught up with a representative from Activision to get the whole mess cleared up. The rep stated that while there is no official release date at this time, the beta will be happening "soon" and that we should expect "more information shortly."

We'd like to point out that the content on the ticker generally seems to correspond with the day it actually hits Marketplace, so we're wondering just how "soon" the beta really is. After all, we know it's being played right now. All we're really waiting for at this point is for Activision and Infinity Ward to start handing out beta codes to participants. For those of you eagerly waiting for more, you'd best keep your browser pointed at CharlieOscarDelta.com.

Official COD 4 beta details are here

We've already talked about it today, but now we have some official news about the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer beta via the official website. CharlieOscarDelta.com has just been updated with a truckload of information about the beta, confirming the idea that the beta will start in the US and roll out to other countries soon after as well as other game specifics including gametypes, weapons, classes, controls, perk and other FAQ goodness. The update also confirms that the COD4:MW MP BETA (yes, that is how they abbreviate it) will feature the three maps Overgrown, Vacant, and Crash. So, as you can tell, there's a bunch of information to take in and still no firm release date.

But we're sure you're wondering how exactly you can enter the COD4:MW MP BETA fun and to be honest it's quite easy and quite random. The download codes will be available on a first come first serve basis to those who answer three trivia questions correctly. But you'll have to keep an eye on the beta page, because the questions and entry into the beta are set at a "coming soon!" status and could open up at any moment in the near future. Head on over to CharlieOscarDelta.com fanboys, soak it all in and prepare for some beta fun!

COD4 beta may still go worldwide

Non-American fanboys take note! It seems Activision was a little hasty in proclaiming that the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta would be restricted to the United States. The Infinity Ward community relations manager known as "fourzerotwo" on the COD4 forums has revised the statement made by Activision only yesterday. The community relations manager clarified on the forums (registration required) that the beta is only beginning in the United States, and that Infinity Ward is planning to make it international and is "currently sorting out those details." Unfortunately, we don't have any more details as to when such a thing will take place.

In other news, "fourzerotwo" also revealed that new details about the beta will be revealed soon. This information should detail some of the weapons and maps that will be available in the beta.

Call of Duty 4 beta to be exclusive to the US

In a right jab to the collective kidneys of Europe and Canada, Infinity Ward and Activision have confirmed that the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare online mulitplayer beta will only be available to US residents. This morning, CVG chatted with publisher Activision when they confirmed the news, but wouldn't elaborate to why the beta was restricted to US Xbox Live members. Though, CVG does mention that they do expect Activision to make an official announcement about the CoD 4 beta sometime today.

If this is true, which we expect it to be, then this will make a bunch of fanboys go mad with rage, because they're being deprived of their CoD 4 beta fun. We're offering this posts' comments to our fellow European and Canadian readers, so they can vent and let out their frustration about this very sad news. We know guys, this really sucks hardcore.

Video: Explosive C4 goodnes in COD4

With so many World War II games out there, many gamers took it as a breath of fresh air to see Call of Duty 4 take place in modern times. After all, with modern times come modern weapons and modern technology. Combine those two things and what do you get? Yes, you get C4. The above gameplay video showcases the use of C4 (handily controlled by a remote) in Call of Duty 4. Suffice it to say, it looks like some good ol' fashioned explosive fun. And don't think it's all just for giggles either. You get an achievement for downing two enemies by blowing up a car, so this is serious business.

Call of Duty 4 achievements storm the net

Those crafty folk at Xbox360Achievements.org have been doing some digging. Having excavated a particularly large hole in a least one of the internets, they have unearthed precious booty. We are, of course, talking about the achievements for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. One particularly surprising element of these achievements: none of them appear to be multiplayer related. From what we can tell, every single achievement is based in the campaign. If we didn't already know about the multiplayer beta, we might be worried. So, what's our favorite out of these non-multiplayer achievements? We'd probably say "Daredevil" which is awarded for killing an enemy while blinded by a flashbang. Hit the "read" link to see them all.

COD4 storage issue clarified: not required

There was quite a bit of falderal surrounding the recently released conceptual box art for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. For those who are unaware, the box art released featured an icon with the text "Storage Required" underneath it. This led many to believe that Call of Duty 4 would break Microsoft's mandate that all 360 titles be playable without a hard drive. Have no fear though, for it looks like it was all a misunderstanding. MyGamerCard.net reports that Infinity Ward Community Relations Manager, Robert Bowling, has confirmed that storage will not be required to play Call of Duty 4. According to Bowling, the icon was added to the concept art in order to represent how the box would appear once logos and icons were applied. It looks like all the people without memory cards or hard drives (both of them) can breathe a sigh of relief.

Call of Duty 4's box art to be decided by YOU

Developer Infinity Ward decided to involve the Call of Duty community in making one of the biggest decisions for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ... the box art. Yup, Infinity Ward wants your opinion on what art will grace the CoD 4 cover and ultimately sit on retail shelves. Their art department created five different box art concepts to choose from (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo) and are looking for the community to comment, vote and make any suggestions for their favorite box art. You can view all five concepts in our gallery below and have your voice be heard over on the official voting forums, but you'll have to register first. Our favorite is "Charlie", because it's badass plain and simple, but you can vote on any design you choose. Go now, exercise your right to vote!

One a side-note, we just noticed something on the bottom of all the box art samples, a little "Storage Required" logo featuring a Xbox 360 HDD and memory card. Hmm, interesting ...

Call of Duty 4 lands Oct. 30, Nov 9 in Europe

Our friends at Xboxygen are reporting that Activision has announced that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will storm store shelves on October 30, with a European release to follow on November 9. In case you haven't heard, Call of Duty 4 wound up being one of the most impressive looking titles at E3, hands down. The level of graphical detail is simply astounding and really has to be seen in motion to be appreciated. Xbox 360 owners will get chance to do that very soon in the upcoming COD4 multiplayer beta. For the latest news on the beta, keep your eye on CharlieOscarDelta.com. In the meantime, mark your calendars. On October 30, Call of Duty is back.

COD4 trailer assaults Marketplace

The Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare trailer that was released late last month is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Granted, it's been available in high definition from the promotional CharlieOscarDelta.com website since last month, but this will save you the trouble of registering for a marketing website. For those unfamiliar with the game, COD4 ditches WWII action in favor of, well, modern warfare. Check out the trailer and be sure to check out the 3D screenshot if you haven't already.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare confirmed

Word on the intertubes is that Activision has officially confirmed upcoming sequel Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare earlier this morning. This of course follows suite with Infinity Ward's news post last week, as we'll be treated to the very first CoD 4 video footage on April 28th during the NFL Draft airing on ESPN. Which is exactly what the advertisement to the right confirms. So guys, let's recap. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has been confirmed, it's being developed by Infinity Ward, and is leaving behind the WWII storyline. Remember, tune into ESPN on April 28th for your first look to what CoD 4 has to offer ... we dare you to not be excited.
