After the unfortunate mess that was the Rush Moving Pictures DLC failure, Harmonix has released a new track pack to take its place. Available on Marketplace now is a new track pack from the group Locksley. We've never heard of them, but we have to admit it's pretty good. Check out a video of their song "She Does" after the break.
So, it ain't Moving Pictures, but it's something, right? Right? Locksley Pack 1 (240 / $3)
Entertainment Weekly reports that Rock Band 2 will be receiving some pretty hefty full albums in the "coming months," presumably after the game launches in September. All told, Entertainment Weekly reveals six full albums from well-known groups. The albums mentioned are:
Foo Fighters -- "The Colour and the Shape"
Red Hot Chili Peppers -- "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"
Jane's Addiction -- "Nothing's Shocking"
Megadeth -- "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying"
Stevie Ray Vaughn -- "Texas Flood"
Also mentioned in the article is a special collection of hits from No Doubt (you know, the band Gwen Steffani was in before she went crazy). Some very big names indeed. We're particularly excited by offerings from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction. How about you, loyal readers? Anything up there tickle your fancy?
We'll put it as simply as possible: There will be no Rush Moving Pictures Rock Band downloadable content releasing this week. Absolutely nada, none. Harmonix just informed us that their mysterious "technical difficulties" have led them to delay the Moving Pictures DLC a few weeks, but they promise to release some other Rock Band DLC later in the week. And, probably as an apology gift, we're also being promised some other BIG Rock BandPAX news this weekend. So, no Rush DLC, but we do get replacement DLC and a big PAX announcement. It's acceptable ... we guess.
If your Tuesday morning ritual mirrors that of ours, where we sign onto Xbox Live to browse the XBLM's new Rock Band downloadable content, then you too were as shocked as us. Because, lo and behold, there is no new Rush Moving Pictures Rock Band album DLC on the XBLM this morning. Sad ... we know. Harmonix has informed us that due to some "technical difficulties", the promised Rush DLC did not make it onto the Marketplace as scheduled but that the "difficulties" are being ironed out. We wait patiently, on the edge of our seats, for the release of the original master of "Tom Sawyer" ... HURRY UP HARMONIX!
Trying something new and a day early, Harmonix decided to reveal next week's Rock Banddownloadable content through their first emailed issue of the Rock Band Community-zine. And within its digital pages comes confirmation of new Rush downloadable content. Yup, RUSH! But don't go and expect to get a Rush three song track pack, because that just isn't the case. Instead, we'll be treated to all seven tracks from their Moving Pictures album which will hit the XBLM next Tuesday, August 26th. Including the original recordings from "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight"! Down with covers, up with original masters and bring on the album DLC!
Now that Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Revolution are all headed our way, Xbox 360 gamers will soon be flooded with new instrument peripherals. This raises the question: which instruments will work with which games? Joystiq has stepped up to the proverbial plate and provided the answer: the Joystiq Instrument Compatibility Matrix 3.0. If you're planning to pick up any of these upcoming music games (and you really should be), consulting this handy chart is a must. It will be updated as new information is released, so be sure to bookmark it for the next time you've got a hankering for a new plastic instrument.
Fresh from the Rock Band downloadable contentEasy-Bake Oven and onto the XBLM are five new chewy-moist morsels of DLC to purchase. And as you're already aware, two tracks from Devo AND two tracks from Duran Duran (yes, Duran Duran!) are available for 160 Microsoft points as well as a song from American Mall that's value priced at 80 points. Sadly, there are no money saving track packs being offered this week ... tear. A comprehensive breakdown of all of today's newly released Rock Band DLC is posted after the break. Rock on!

There's an interesting interview over on IGN where the Harmonix crew sits down to chit-chat about the Rock Band 2 song selection process as well as the tactics and strategies that are involved. All of which tells us a lot about them and Rock Band. One being that Harmonix takes the Rock Band track selection process seriously. Two being that they're busy bees when it comes to securing and licensing band music. Third being that we can all but expect to see more The Who downloadable content in the near future. And that, friends, is what Martha Stewart would call a very, very good thing. Like we said, it's a good read, so make the jump and begin the traditional reading process.
On the official Rock Band forums, HMXaleX just posted a list of next week's Rock Banddownloadable content, all of which comes straight from the 1980s. Oh yes, the 80s. Two tracks from Devo and Duran Duran will be lovingly placed on the XBLM for purchase on Tuesday, August 19th with both Devo tracks being new recordings done special for Rock Band (must've lost the masters, doh!) But that isn't quite it, there will also be an American Mall soundtrack song by The Janitors value priced for 80 MS points as well. DLC list below:

Live in Australia? Like to rock out? Wish you had Rock Band? Well, sorry, because you may not get it this Fall, next year or (frankly) ever if Australian retailers have their way.
Word on the rumor street is that Australian retailers are not interested in stocking the ginormous Rock Band bundles, because of the shelf space it takes up and the fact that Rock Band is nearly a year old with a sequel releasing soon. Another reason: Guitar Hero: World Touris newer and cheaper which some retailers may see as an equal replacement for Rock Band on their shelves. Taking this retail rumor one step further, it's entirely possible that (for the same reasons) Rock Band 2 won't reach Australian shores either. Sad too ... Australians don't know what they're missing and how fun it is to sing to Weezer tracks.
ShackNews has an interesting rumor regarding the release of Rock Band 2 and its timed exclusivity on the Xbox 360. They're reporting that the Rock Band 2 Special Edition bundle (the "big box" which includes all the instruments) has been delayed by a month and will release on October 19th while the stand alone game will make it into retailers, as promised, on September 14th. Their proof? Both the official Rock Band store and other online retailers list the 360 Special Edition bundle's release date for October 17 which is coincidentally the release date for the PS3 and Wii versions. If true, this will make for a tough Rock Band 2 purchasing decision. Buy the game itself in September or wait an entire month to get the $199 bundle ... decisions, decisions.
The six tracks (viewable after the break) are all value priced at 80 Microsoft points apiece for a limited time and can be downloaded in one felt swoop as a Roadrunner Records Pack for 480 points. With music from Killswitch Engage, Megadeth, Dream Theater, DevilDriver, Airoborne and Machine Head, we have a feeling we'll be plopping down our MS points for a song or two. It's Rock Band DLC Tuesday, go and rock out already ...
Viewable over on IGN is a complete listing of all 50 achievements for a little musical game called Rock Band 2. And achievement / Gamerscore whores will be happy to hear that Harmonix made unlocking Rock Band 2's achievements a bit easier than the original. This time around, the achievements are spread around even more than what Rock Band did allowing 10 Gamerscore to be unlocked for making a band logo, 20 Gamerscore for being a savior three times in a song and (one of our favorites) the 25 Gamerscore "The Bachman-Turner Award" achievement where you have to enable Overdrive for 90 seconds. Make the leap over to IGN to get your Rock Band 2 achievables fix.
Next Tuesday, August 12th, Rock Band'ers will be treated to a six pack of DLC from the Roadrunner record label from artists like Megadeth, Dream Theater and Machine Head. Best part, each track is value priced at 80 Microsoft points per track (480 points for the six song track pack) for the entire month! Prices will back jump up to the normal 160 points per track pricing starting in September, so if you see anything below that you enjoy, we advise making a purchase come Tuesday. Our recommendation: Killswitch Engage's "My Curse".
Warner Music has said that companies like Harmonix and Activision will need to shell out more cash to license songs for games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
Warner Music leading man Edgar Brofman told Reuters that considering each company's game is completely dependent on the content the music industry owns and controls, "The amount being paid to the music industry ... is far too small." Brofman compared the significance of rhythm music games to the industry shifting introductions of MTV and iTunes. Even though it has been reported that royalties for content sales in music games are much higher than other services, such as iTunes, we're surprised it took this long for the industry to start sobbing about getting paid. If licenses change, could this spell an increase in downloadable content prices?
