Guitar Hero 4 will allow for track creation & more

According to the latest issue of Game Informer, the supposed innovation of Guitar Hero 4 is going to be the creation of custom tracks, among many other things. Coming to us courtesy NeoGAF is the news that the game will include three instruments (but no lyrics), drums, bass, and vocals guitar. Not only that, but GH4 is also going to include a form of file sharing allowing you to share up to 5 different songs (more if you're rated higher) to "GH Tunes" for anyone to download. Included in the download would also be the custom title, creator name, and custom album art. And allowing for even more personalization, the game will also have customizable rockers and instruments.

And that's not all either, Neversoft has also confirmed that Van Halen, The Eagles, Linkin Park and Sublime will be making appearances, and that the GH4 controller sports some sort of new input device. With so much change coming to the franchise, and so much emphasis on custom content, is it possible that Guitar Hero can survive in the world of Rock Band?

Activision boasts 15 million Guitar Hero song downloads

Not to be outdone by its more innovative brother Rock Band, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith revealed the Guitar Hero franchise has recently surpassed 15 million individual song downloads. The announcement was made during a recent earnings call where Activision also revealed future plans of the Tony Hawk, Call of Duty and James Bond licenses.

Viacom, owner of Harmonix, recently announced Rock Band has reached the 10 million song download mark.

It's notable that the Guitar Hero announcement seems to relate to both Guitar Hero II (Xbox 360) and Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360 and PS3) downloads while the Rock Band announcement appears to be a combination of Xbox 360 and PS3 online sales. While Harmonix and Activision continue their urinating contest over numbers, we'll just assume both are doing well in the content sales department for future reference.

Guitar Hero set to make 'significant leap' this year

Did somebody say instruments? Actually, no, no they didn't. Still, it's hard to imagine what else could be in store for Guitar Hero. According to Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith, the series is set to make a "significant leap forward in innovation." The information was revealed in a conference call yesterday, and while no more details were given, Griffith did note that more info would be released "in the coming weeks." Honestly though, what would it be other than more instruments? Maybe you can also tilt the guitar down now? Real strings instead of buttons? Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments as we wait for the official answer.

Strum with your feet! Ben Heck goes Guitar Hero

It's been a looong time since the first 360 Laptop, and console modder extraordinaire, Ben Heckendorn, has been busy. His newest project is designed to allow users to use their Guitar Hero controllers with a single hand. The controller plugs into a modified Guitar Hero 3 Les Paul wireless controller, and operates the strumming and whammy. Placing ones foot into the pedal depresses the heel and inserts ones toes into the metal trough. Tapping your toes and foot up and down is the equivalent of strumming, and raising your heel is the equivalent of the whammy bar. Plus, they look cool. From laptops to controllers, you're doing some pretty unique things Ben, keep up the great work!

Guitar Hero isn't without its share of strange-looking character models and Activision has just dropped nine new screens of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith proving it yet again.

These new shots showcase the world famous title band Aerosmith along with popular in game guitar rocker Judy Nails. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith hits the Xbox 360 on this June.

There's a brand new Guitar Hero Aerosmith "Rock Out Trailer" that recently released which aims at pulling you back into the Guitar Hero world. Which it does, because GHAero's look really hasn't changed all that much from GHIII, except for the addition of real-time ribbon physics that have been added for Steven Tyler's microphone stand. And we don't know if it's just us or not, but don't you think the cartoon version of Steven Tyler is a bit on the manorexic side? We can count his ribs ... just saying.

Aerosmith exclusive to Guitar Hero, Rock Band DLC denied

Rock Band fanboys who never plan on ever going back to the Guitar Hero days yet fully support Steven Tyler and his band will be shedding a tear today. Shedding a tear because it was just revealed that Aerosmith struck a deal with the Guitar Hero franchise allowing them exclusive use of their music, meaning no Aero love for Harmonix or Rock Band. Which isn't all that surprising seeing that Activision has been treating Aerosmith like royalty lately, with plans of releasing a special Guitar Hero: Aerosmith edition later this June and licensing their likeness, names and music. All said, Rock Band owners can still experience a bit of Aerosmith with the game's "Train Kept A Rollin" track which was licensed prior to the band's agreement with Activision. It'll be the only Aerosmith Rock Band sees for a long, long while.

GHIV recipe will add a pinch of Rock Band

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is set for release in June, but as most of you know it isn't the next true installment, it's an expansion upon GHIII so to speak. But that's where Guitar Hero IV comes in, the next true stand alone sequel and word from Activision is that it'll be a lot more like Rock Band. Oh joy!

Talking to Conde Nast Portfolio magazine, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick mentioned that Guitar Hero IV will "include a lot of other instruments" including a microphone for vocals. Hence the Rock Band comparison. Kotick also mentioned that GHIV will be the "first game we've had in which we can use local content and local bands", possibly allowing them to release local band DLC to select markets.

So, there you have it. Guitar Hero IV (not the Aerosmith edition, that's something entirely separate) will feature additional instruments and local content while still retaining the Guitar Hero name. Maybe, to clear up any confusion, they'll drop the "IV" and simply go with Guitar Hero: Rock Band Edition ... eh?

Guitar Hero Aerosmith trailer 'Same Old Song and Dance' but is still 'Amazing'

As everyone knows, Activision's first foray into the band-dedicated Guitar Hero releases kicks off with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith this summer. While we've joked about the title in the past we're excited to see how the final product will hit with fans of the billion-dollar franchise. One interesting note from the video is the text that follows the introduction of legendary rockers. After gazing upon the ~~awesome~~ interestingly animated faces of the band, the trailer introduces the gamer as "and you." This disappointingly points at the inability to play as Joe Perry, Brad Whitford or Tom Hamilton. But we'll wait and see. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is set to rock on the Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii this June.

Guitar Hero fans who are no fans of the Aerosmith will be happy to know that this Summer's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will not be limited to music from the mouth of Steven Tyler. Praise the music gods!

Gameinformer received the scoop straight from Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry's mouth, when he mentioned that bands like The Kinks, Cheap Trick, Mott the Hoople and Joan Jett will also be featured in GH:Aero. These new band announcements, on top of Lenny Kravitz, The White Stripes and Deep Purple all of which Perry confirmed previously, make GH:Aero a more rounded and acceptable purchase. That said, we wonder how gamers' negative sentiment surrounding Activision and how they're handling the GH franchise will play out and how well GH:Aero will sell. Thumbs up to the new band announcements though.

Next stop for Guitar Hero: The Beatles?

Help! We need somebody! Help! No, seriously folks, Martin N. "Marty" Bandier of Sony / ATV Music Publishing has officially stated that a version of Guitar Hero dedicated to The Beatles is something the company would "like to pursue." Now, we never intended to jump all over the "why isn't this on Rock Band?" bandwagon. Some music really makes more sense on Guitar Hero, but The Beatles? That just screams Rock Band. Of course, we understand why Mr. Bandier might fancy Guitar Hero over Rock Band. We imagine it's money. That's what he wants (that's what he wants). A lot of money. But just imagine all the people that could play on Rock Band (we wonder if you can). With any luck, Mr. ~~Kite~~ Bandier and Harmonix can work it out and come together. We just hope they don't make it bad. In the meantime, we'll just have to let it be and hope they don't let us down.

Harmonix sues Activision over royalties, withdraws

It looks like the rhythm game battle between Activision and Harmonix extends beyond the sales gap between Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, as Harmonix sued Activision on Monday. The suit was withdrawn on Tuesday as the threat of a legal battle was apparently enough to make Activision talk with the company. According to the lawsuit, Harmonix asserts that it is owed $14.5 million in unpaid royalties for the use of its technology in Guitar Hero III and further asserts that the company has not received any money for song downloads, in-game ads, and related products. Variety reports that the lawsuit was "clearly intended" to lay down a precedent for future iterations of the Guitar Hero series (of which there are many, many planned). Activision, for its part, claims that it has paid Harmonix "sufficient" royalties.

Guitar Hero III + amBX = party machine

Well, any rhythm game really, but this example uses Guitar Hero III. Honestly, we'd never heard of amBX before, but Phillips would have you believe it's the next step in interactive technology. Nope, it's not touch screens or big ass tables, it's ... colors? Desperate marketing aside, when combined with Guitar Hero III, amBX does make for an impressive light show. Whether or not it gives the $99 Rock Band stage kit a run for its money remains to be seen. At twice the price, you'd think it would (or hope so anyway). Unfortunately, it looks like we'll have to wait for the 360 version of amBX hardware -- this video utilized the PC version -- as it's still in development. We're waiting with sarcastically bated breath.

For those of you interested in the upcoming Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, you can ensure your copy will be set aside from Red Octane's official website when the flood of loyal Steven Tyler fans remember to buy it after taking their Alzheimer's medication.

No, we joke. We wouldn't want to offend people with Alzheimer's by insinuating they would want to play a dedicated Aerosmith Guitar Hero game, which actually also features artists that inspired and are inspired by the band.

Set to hit stores this June, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith brings GH fans closer to a band that is known for their ... vocals. Wait, we still don't get it. OK, Aerosmith is cool enough but their staple band member is the singer not the guitarist. In fact we don't even know who the guitarist is but we assume he's the guy holding the guitar in the header above. Else, that could be a roadie doing some sound tests. Wait, I think Neversoft just trademarked Guitar Hero: Sound Test. Sorry readers, our bad.

Note: To clarify, this was written in jest. I know who Joe Perry is guys. ToJo is awesome, we're poking fun.
