Doom 4 announced, monster closets being restocked

After a nearly four year hiatus, the Doom series is back. Id Software today announced that Doom 4 has officially begun production and that the company is looking for new talent to produce the sequel. Said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, "Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth." Right now that's all we know. No platforms have been announced but, given the franchise's history, we'd expect it to show up on the 360 in some form.

Those looking to scratch that Doom itch while we wait for more info may want to check out the new series of Doom 3 novels. The first in a planned trilogy, Worlds on Fire, is actually pretty decent (yeah, we were surprised too).

Doom and Assault Heroes now only 400 MS Points

If you're looking for this week's new Xbox Live Arcade games, don't bother. There aren't any you see, because this week all we're getting is the newly discounted versions of Doom and Assault Heroes. Yes, they are now both considered Xbox Live Arcade Hits, and are now both available for only 400 MS Points each, half their original price. Seeing as these aren't new titles, we won't be putting together a new XBLA in Brief video this week. Suffice it to say that both are very good XBLA games and easily worth 400 points each.

Assault Heroes and Doom go half price this Wed

This Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday, we will sadly not be treated to any new Arcade releases. And we agree, that's a stinker. But there is a bright spot this week when, this Wednesday, March 19th, both the previously released XBLA games Assault Heroes and Doom will graduate to Xbox Live Arcade Hits status. And, as everyone knows, when an XBLA game becomes an Arcade Hit it means that its price gets slashed and in this case, in half to 400 Microsoft points each. No new releases is a bummer, but we haven't seen any new Arcade Hits since the program's launch in December so how could we not be thrilled for discounted XBLA fun? Remember, there's always next week.

Rumor: XBLA is Doomed again

Recently spotted on the ESRB's website were ratings for Xbox 360 versions of Ultimate DOOM and Final DOOM (they're both rated M by the way). Ultimate Doom is technically already available on Xbox Live Arcade, as it is merely DOOM with an added fourth episode, "Thy Flesh Consumed." Even though the Arcade rendition is known only as DOOM, it does contain the fourth episode. Final DOOM, on the other hand, would be a new entry on the Xbox 360. Containing 2 new 32 level episodes, "Evilution" and "The Plutonia Experiment," Final DOOM is an expansion of DOOM II.

We like us some DOOM, and a new expansion -- especially with some good multiplayer maps -- would be welcome, but we'd rather see some other FPS action first. And since you asked, we'd like to put in our vote for Heretic. There's nothing quite like turning your opponent into a chicken, is there?

What are you playing: FINISH HIM edition

Another Friday, another edition of -- say it with me now - "What are you playing?" Personally, I've been playing a lot of Xbox Live Arcade lately. All these titles in the last month or so, it feels like an embarrassment of riches. So, this weekend, I'll be playing UMK3, DOOM, Lumines (yeah, I can't help it), and even getting some achievements for Cloning Clyde. I may sprinkle in some LEGO Star Wars II and some Enchanted Arms, too.

On a side note, I don't know how many of you have gotten Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but I had forgotten how incredibly cheap the AI is. It's terrible. It's not just cheap, it's the kind of cheap programming that allows CPU players to cut corners that human players can't. For instance, computers can skip frames of animation so that they can react faster -- like jump kicking you even though you started your jump kick first, etc. It's maddening. And, for the record, Shao Kahn may be the cheapest boss ever.

How about all of you? Hmmmm? What will you be playing this weekend?

What are you playing: use the Force edition

What did I spy when I got home on Wednesday, buried among a week's worth of useless coupons? My rental copy of LEGO Star Wars II, of course! So, naturally, I'll be digging into that posthaste. I've still got to finish Overtime Mode in Dead Rising, too. Not to mention I've only just finished the first episode of DOOM. And, come to think of it, I've still got a copy of Enchanted Arms that I haven't even touched yet. Now all the holiday games are starting to drop as well. Damn, how the hell are we supposed to fit all this stuff in?

But enough of my petty problems. The real question is -- as always -- what are you playing?

X06: Two new Halo projects announced (w/ Peter Jackson!)

The most awkward moment of today's X06 press briefing may also have been the most profound. We are of course talking about the moment that Peter Jackson took the stage to massive applause. While PJ -- we call him PJ -- looked a little nervous talking in front of so many people, what he announced could turn out to be one of the biggest announcements for the video game industry this year.

DOOM possesses Xbox Live Arcade [update 1]

DOOM is now available on Xbox Live Arcade ... well, go get it!

Update: Reader Dylan Copeland has brought to our attention that we promised to name drop whoever guessed the mystery XBLA game. Right you are, Dylan. Congrats to Ed for being the first to guess correctly that DOOM was the mystery game (and being the second comment on the post altogether). Honorable mention to Dylan Copeland for also guessing correctly and reminding us of our promise. And, by the way, the full game, as most of you know by now, is 800 points.

Carmack: 360 is "a really sweet development system"

John Carmack is a video game deity. Responsible for many of the graphical and technological advancements of the medium, through his work on the engines for everything from Wolfenstein to Doom III, Carmack's opinion carries with it an almost incomprehensible amount of industry weight. So Carmack saying the Xbox 360 is "a really sweet development system" means precisely that.

His praise isn't completely unequivocal though. He says about both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, "They can quote these incredibly high numbers of giga-flops or tera-flops or whatever, but in reality, when you do a straightforward development process on them, they’re significantly slower than a modern high-end PC."

The interview is from the February issue of PC Gamer UK, which hits newsstands today. We can probably expect to hear more details about both consoles therein. Any UK readers have a subscription?
