Rick Nash covering NHL 2K9

Two key announcements have been made for fans of 2K Sports' NHL franchise. First, and more importantly of course, Rick Nash has been tapped as the cover athlete of NHL 2K9. This coming from a memorable season for the Columbus Blue Jackets where they, you know didn't make the playoffs. But that's besides the point!

The second, and way less important, is developer Visual Concepts is "taking over" the development reigns of the game instead of working with Kush Games and promises to rebuild the game from the ground up. Surprising changes would be made due to the fact that 2K8 was one of the second best hockey game available according to Metacritic.

Some things you may want to consider about this post. One, Rick Nash? Really? Two, building the title from the ground up? Thank goodness. Three, there were only two hockey games last year.

Oh, sorry to any Nash or Blue Jackets fans. I'm a Leafs fan, so what do I know?

Lost Planet: Colonies goes gold

There are two things we know for sure about Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - COLONIES Edition. First, someone at Capcom needs to fire the guy who makes these names up, for serious. Second, the Xbox 360 and PC exclusive is almost here.

Yesterday Capcom announced the platinum release of Lost Planet, which includes new missions, multiplayer maps and modes (including the ability to play as the evil Akrid), has gone gold. So throw on your parka and make a warm cup-o-coffee, it's about to get chilly up-in-this 'ma.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - COLONIES Edition *sigh* hits retail on May 27.

Enemy Territory achievements rescued

Achievement fans rest easy. Thanks to the crack team of soldiers (pictured above) we've found the full list of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars achievements. The elusive achievement list was hiding out at Xbox360Achievements.org and have since been rescued from danger. Promising to soon line your Gamerscore pockets, these points cover everything from completing the multiple campaign modes (North America, Europe, Africa and Pacific) to online ranking achievements that most of us will never get.

As for these guys? If you have a problem. If no one else can help, and if you can find them ... maybe you can hire, the Quake-Team.

Gears of War 2: 4 screens from Assault

Microsoft released four screen grabs from the first gameplay footage of Gears of War 2. Hitting this November, Gears 2 is the sequel to the critically and commercially successful Gears of War which released exclusively on the Xbox 360.

In Gears 2 humans are bringing the fight to the Locust, utilizing new moves, weapons and various ways to cut dudes in half.

Battlefield: Bad Company demo dropping June 5

Anyone who wasn't lucky enough to experience the closed beta of the slightly controversial EA first-person comedy-shooter (not kidding), Battlefield: Bad Company, will soon have their chance. Today EA announced that a demo for the DICE developed title will hit the Xbox Live Marketplace and PSN on June 5. The single and multiplayer demo promises to showcase what was in the beta as well as the wacky characters found in the campaign mode. Gamers who decide to pre-order the title from select retailers will be treated an early download of the demo beginning May 29.

For those at home keeping score you'll remember pre-ordering and playing the demo will give gamers access to two of the five controversial weapons found in the beta. Pre-ordering gives gamers access to the QBU88 Sniper Rifle while downloading and playing the demo nets players the UZI Submachine Gun.

Battlefield: Bad Company ships on June 25.

MK vs DC includes 'modified fatalities'

When Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was announced we assumed that the game's violence level would be downgraded to accommodate the new partnership, apparently we were only slightly correct.

In an interview with GameTap, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon notes the team at Midway has never mentioned the loss of fatalities in the latest installment of the franchise. "We did acknowledge that we won't be able to do the same kinds of outrageous moves, like tearing someone's [sic] head off and the spine being attached to it," he says, adding, "My response is that, no, we're modifying fatalities. But I have every intention to keep finishers."

With that said, we're forced to wait for new video and screens of the game to understand what Boon's definition of "finishers" really is. Is Mortal Kombat really only about violent end-match animations or is that statement akin to claiming Grand Theft Auto is only about killing people? We suspect we'll find out soon when more information on Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe becomes available.

Ninja Gaiden 2: Ryu has daddy issues

We didn't think hardcore ninja types had daddy issues but this latest clip of Ninja Gaiden 2 tells us otherwise. It showcases the ultra-ninja Genshin versus the father of Ninja Gaiden star Ryu Hayabusa. In the clip Ryu's father Joe Hayabusa (seriously, his name is Joe) faces off against the ultimate bad-dude before Ryu walks in and screams out for his father's safety, and probably because he never played catch with him as a kid.

After the jump you can check out another cutscene that features the werewolf boss, Volf (seriously who names these characters?). Surprisingly Volf reminds us of Kelsey Grammar's portrayal of Beast in X-Men 3. Well-spoken werewolves FTW!

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith - 9 new hero shots

Guitar Hero isn't without its share of strange-looking character models and Activision has just dropped nine new screens of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith proving it yet again.

These new shots showcase the world famous title band Aerosmith along with popular in game guitar rocker Judy Nails. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith hits the Xbox 360 on this June.

Bourne Conspiracy demo hits UK stores

While the rest of us wait for the May 19 demo of Sierra's Bourne Conspiracy action title to hit Xbox Live, UK gamers can snag the demo today at their local GAME store. While picking up his copy of Grand Theft Auto IV one of our loyal X3F soldiers was given the demo for the anticipated game based on the best-selling novels by Robert Ludlum. We've been vocal on our interest in the game so color us green with envy from the early demo, at least until it finally lands on the Marketplace later this month.

Silent Hill - Homecoming: 11 haunting new screens

Coming soon from The Collective is the fifth game in Konami's Silent Hill series, recently renamed Silent Hill: Homecoming. From the 11 new screenshots we've snagged it appears that the California-based developer has captured the creepy atmosphere of the original Silent Hill games. Since it was announced that The Collective would be developing the latest entry of the series, and not the original Konami team, fans have been somewhat reluctant to get on board with the game. While it isn't set to release until the fall, the game at least appears to be a step in the right direction.

Operation Darkness demo on XBL Marketplace

A few months ago the demo for Operation Darkness, one of the first Xbox 360 titles from famed Japanese publisher Atlus, hit the Far East Live Marketplace; last night the same demo has made its way Stateside for Western gamers to take it for a spin.

Featuring 4-player online co-op, the strategy RPG is set in an alternate World War II universe where you must do battle with mystical creatures and the many minions of Hitler. That's right, no sugar coating this final boss. Strategy RPG fans tired of their lack of options on the Xbox 360, unless you're an XBLA fiend, should check this one out.

Quake Wars: Four new screens, screens, SCREENS!

Upcoming multiplayer focused shooter, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is closing in on release and we have a few fresh screens of the Xbox 360 version. In development from Nerve Software, the team behind the Return to Wolfenstein Xbox port, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a class based first person shooter in the Quake universe.

While the original PC release from Fall '07 was marketed as a serious shooter, the console version's marketing has taken a slightly different approach, hence our silly headline. The Xbox 360 and PS3 version of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars lands at retail on May 27.

Soul Calibur IV special edition includes Yoda threads

Another game release, another special edition. The Soul Calibur IV special edition has recently been detailed by Namco Bandai and includes your standard special edition trinkets.

Over-sized tin? Check. Art book? Check. T-Shirt? Check. Also included is a "Tournament Kit," a rather grandiose way of saying a reusable blank tournament bracket card. Interesting note to Star Wars fans, the Xbox 360 special edition includes a white t-shirt with Yoda/Siegfried art while the PS3 version includes a black Darth Vader/Mitsurugi tee (all versions are XL). We'll leave it up to you to decide whether or not the collection warrants the $80 price-tag.

Alone in the Dark special edition detailed, flashlight not included

One of our, surprisingly, most anticipated titles of 2008 happens to be the latest installment in the Alone in the Dark series. Taking advantage of our suspiciously piqued interest for the game, Atari has announced and detailed a special edition that will release along side the standard package. Included in the over-sized box edition is the game (duh!), making of documentary, CD soundtrack (8 tracks), art book and a figurine of in game hero Edward Carnby.

While no price has been confirmed for the special edition, this package would be a steal for an extra $10. Here's hoping the special edition price-point doesn't dim the lights on our bank account when it releases this summer.

Grand Theft Auto IV leaked online

At approximately 1:45AM EST the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV was leaked onto the internet. According to our X3F tipsters, who better plan on actually buying the game, thousands of users are leeching the 6.36 GB potential game of the year candidate. The release is a rip of the PAL version, specifically from the Asian market, and comes a mere six days before retailers place the game on store shelves.

We don't want to get on our soapbox here but we hope our readers would shy away from downloading a full version of the game, especially considering the team at Rockstar North have garnered near-perfect review scores for the release. Why? Well, it's illegal kids ... actually come to think of it, this leak is deliciously ironic. Isn't it?

[Thanks, Michael S.T.]
