E308: Gears of War 2 multiplayer impressions

After much anticipation and a bunch of excitement fueled anxiety, we made it to Microsoft's Gears of War 2 multiplayer reception last night where journalist and video game execs mingled, drank some drinks and chainsawed the night away. We were able to test out a few of Gears 2's various multiplayer modes and give the new weapons a test drive all while taking it all in, analyzing the gaming experience and garnering an opinion. Quite simply, we could say the game is "badass" and be on our way. But we're sure you'd like a bit more explanation. Read on to get a flavor of what multiplayer mayhem you'll be experiencing come November 7th.

E308: Far Cry 2 trailer proves Africa is the hottest new setting for games

Resident Evil 5 and Far Cry 2 are both Africa bound! Coming soon from Ubisoft Montreal is Far Cry 2. A sequel of sorts, Far Cry 2 takes the name from the original title developed by Crytek and features a new story and world. Taking place in an unnamed part of Africa players can expect a more realistic shooter than the original. If that guarantees we won't be shooting up aliens in the boiling heat then sign us up! Also, check out the briefly flashed-URL that points to the blog of Reuben Monday-Oluwagembi, the personal blog of the journalist narrator from the trailer. Yay! More Alternate Reality Games! Far Cry 2 is set to release this October, the trailer is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

E308: Cliff + X3F sticker = OMGBBQ MEGATON!

We think this blog's title pretty much says it all folks. We actually got a chance to stick the Cliff Bleszinski with an X3F sticker during the Gears of War 2 reception and he was kind enough to pose for a photo with his most obsessive uber fanboy, me, Dustin. I can now safely say that my blogging dreams have been fulfilled. Joy! Though, we'll admit, Cliff was a bit apprehensive about the stickering thing, but once our noble X3F intentions were made clear and his worries about being ninja-stuck were settled, he played along. Slapping a sticky sticker to his forehead and embracing his most obsessive Gears fan (yes, it was a full embrace ... honest!) we snapped the photo and the rest is history. Cliff got X3F'ed ... can you believe it guys? W00t times like 20!

Oh, and be sure to keep your eyes peeled on our E308 X3F Sticker gallery, because we'll be adding a whole bunch of new and totally "epic" photos soon'ish. Stay tuned!

E308: Rock Band 2 set-list revealed, song transfer 'under $5'

During the Microsoft Press Conference yesterday, Harmonix unveiled the full song set-list for Rock Band 2. Nearly doubling the set list size of the original release, Rock Band 2 will include 84 tracks (all master recordings) on the retail disc, plus there are plans to release an additional 20 tracks as free downloadable content after the game's release.

The Rock Band 2 press release, which included the final set-list for the game, also mentions that Rock Band content from the original retail disc will be transferable to the sequel, but for a price. According to the release, "owners of the original Rock Band will have the ability to export most of the Rock Band disc tracks and upgrade them into Rock Band 2 gameplay-the first time ever in videogame history!" A fee is required to unlock the content, which will be "under 5 dollars" according to the release. Also, as stated before, Rock Band 2 will support all downloadable content from the original Rock Band.

Rock Band 2 is set to release exclusively on the Xbox 360 this September. With classic bands AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Pearl Jam and more added to the game, Rock Band 2 hasn't had us this excited about music since the invention of the compact disc. Wow. Totally just aged ourselves there.

Full set-list for Rock Band 2 after the jump.

E308: Fable 2 screens and limited edition box art

Rounding down our media blitz for the evening are screenshots and concept art for Fable 2. From developer Lionhead Studios, the upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive role-playing title is the sequel to the 2004 critically and commercially acclaimed game Fable on the original Xbox and PC.

Along with the screens you can take a sneak peak at the artwork for the Limited Edition of Fable 2, which doesn't look at cool as the standard edition -- but it promises a bunch of additional items for your extra cash. Enjoy the screens, make a wallpaper of some kind or if you're feeling really creative you can utilize your Photoshop skills and use the heads of the X3F staff to make hilarious photos. it'll be like payback since most of us are playing the game tomorrow. Fable 2 is set to release this October.

The Gears of War 2 reception in pictures

click to embiggen

We're still getting our Gears of War 2 reception at E3. We've gotten a chance to play the game's multiplayer. So far, it's good stuff, and we imagine Gears fans will be pleased. We need to soak up a little bit more before we write up our impressions. In the meantime, check out a gallery of the event itself. Sorry, we're totally barred from capturing any shots of the screens, so you'll have to settle for pictures of the swanky club, Ciudad, where the event is being held in LA. Enjoy.

We'll add more pictures to the gallery when we get a chance.

E308: Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts media attack!

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts marks the return of the beloved N64 platform duo, exclusively on the Xbox 360. Today during the Microsoft press conference, Rare unveiled a new trailer (embedded above) for the title and Microsoft released a stockpile of screenshots and rendered artwork. Could Banjo Kazooie answer Microsoft's platformer mascot questions? Wait, did Microsoft have platformer mascot questions? Anyway, the game looks great so far but we must repeat something we mentioned earlier that's twice as awesome -- the original Banjo Kazooie is coming to Xbox Live Arcade! Sweet.

X3F at the Gears of War 2 reception

You see that? You know what that is? That's a Dustin Burg experiencing pure elation. We're at Microsoft's Gears of War 2 reception. We are playing Gears of War 2. Specifically, we're checking out multiplayer, including the new survival co-op mode called Horde. We'll have impressions up sometime tonight, along with a gallery of the proceedings. You've been warned.

E308: Halo Wars screens

Halo Wars, the unfortunately delayed RTS from famed PC developers Ensemble Studios, is looking better every time we see it. The latest screenshots are no different. Showcasing the epic battles of a world before a lone Spartan was called into action, Halo Wars is certain to be a blockbuster title when it hits in Spring 2009 exclusively on the Xbox 360. As an added bonus, Microsoft included a trio of stills from the awesome CGI trailer -- which you can watch now on X3F TV!

E308: Gears of War 2 screens, renders and art

You'd think that since the Microsoft Press Conference was over we'd all curl up and think about the awesomeness. Naw! We still got a ton of stuff to show and tell you! So grab a cup of coffee for another content explosion.

This update is all about Gears of War 2. Microsoft released a handful of news screens and concept art for the anticipated sequel today as well as a shot at the retail box art for the game. Word around the Twitter campfire is Cliff Bleszinski's original motto of "bigger, better and more badass" for Gears 2 has been replaced by "epic and intimate." This box art screams it.

E308: Halo Wars confirmed for 2009

Confirming a rumor we heard earlier in the day, 1UP.com is reporting that Halo Wars has indeed slipped to the first half of 2009. While we're upset we won't get the chance to destroy squads with our very own Scarab in 2008, we've anticipated this delay in the past. It's a shame gamers won't get to experience the game this year but with the recent announcements at E3 2008 of online cooperative play in Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 we don't anticipate anyone getting bored for a while.

[Thanks, Tyler]

E308: Dragon Age Origins will see life on consoles

In case you missed it during our Live Blog of the Electronic Arts press conference, there's some new information from the guys at BioWare. BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk announced that the upcoming PC title Dragon Age Origins will also see life on consoles, in the future. Expected to be exclusive to the PC initially, the dungeon crawler will feel familiar to fans of Baldur's Gate -- another BioWare franchise. No other information on a console release schedule for Dragon Age Origins is available yet, but we expect it won't be for quite some time.

E308: Final Fantasy XIII trailer [Update]

Update: Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 and PS3 will ship simultaneously in North America and Europe (although region ship dates may vary). The game remains a PS3 exclusive and will ship first in Japan.

Tried of squinting at your monitor attempting to watch the Final Fantasy XIII trailer showcased at the Microsoft Press Conference? Team X3F has got your back. Unveiled again, and for the first time (explanation to follow), during the Square Enix press conference is the trailer in its entirety (that's the again part) but with the added bonus of a PS3 Exclusive ... In Japan banner at the end (that's the first time part).

As usual with most Square Enix games, it looks beautiful and is sure to be a hit when it lands on the Xbox 360. Whenever that is. Final Fantasy XIII is coming to the Xbox 360! Just thought we'd say it again.

E308 X3F Sticker Gallery: The conference aftermath

After a stress filled, exciting and hella' amazing E3 Microsoft press conference, we figured what better time to stick high profile Microsoft folks with our X3F stickers than during the post-conference mayhem. So, that's exactly what we did. We cornered our victims while waiting in line, during the Community Briefing and at the Gamerscore Blog's Starbucks Meetup. We successfully spread the X3F sticker love by tagging Major Nelson, the entire GSB crew including John, Chris and Sara as well as Aaron Greenberg and Microsoft's Marc Whitten. We even ninja-stuck Joystiq's Ludwig while he was doing some "work" and refused to pay attention. That evil Ludwig. You can view all the E308 X3F sticker tagging in the gallery below, but know that we're far from done. The stickering will commence all E3 week long, so stay tuned!
