Okay, okay, maybe we jumped the gun a bit with our prediction that last week would see the release of both Soulcalibur and Schizoid. But we think Microsoft just figured out the pattern and decided to mess with us for the sake of it. We kid. Though we do think the idea still has merit, so in the spirit of infotainment, we bring you news of the latest Xbox.com page: Golf: Tee It Up!

Still, given that last week only saw one game released to XBLA and we already know that both dodgeball games are set for release before the month is out, if Microsoft continues the trend of one game per week we should already have a good idea of the month's releases.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sony mocks the 360 for its XBLA de-listing and UI

Filed under: News, Console wars, Xbox Live Arcade

Getting in a few jabs heading into E3, Sony's PlayStation Network boss Eric Lempel decided to call out Microsoft on their Xbox Live Arcade de-listing antics and making fun of the Xbox 360 for its use of an inferior user interface.

"We definitely want to make sure that [the PlayStation Store] offers quality titles and games that our consumers are going to enjoy" Lempel told GamesIndustry.biz, saying that "depending on what type of UI you have you can accommodate a lot of titles." Then, Lempel throws in a verbal left hook, saying that "over at the competitors' UI they may have some issues just displaying content, and scrolling up and down lists isn't the easiest way to find things." Ouch. We'll be the first to acknowledge the 360's XBLM may not incorporate the best way to navigate content, but the PSN isn't all peaches and creme either. Maybe Sony is just feeling the need to blow off some steam because, as we all know, releasing a 2.4 update can cause a lot of unwanted stress.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

More MM9 nuttiness; USK rates the game for 360

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

Will the back and forth never end? It's multiplatform, then it's not, and now it looks like it is again. With no official word from Capcom, this new Mega Man 9 news of course has only as much credence as the first OFLC rating. But we really don't think that government game rating boards are in the habit of making up games or confusing which controller and console they're using, regardless of what country the ratings board is from. Though there is just one little thing that makes this whole situation more of an oddity. Our multilingual readers will already have noticed, but the USK strangely lists it from the genre of, ahem, "Role playing." Weird.

[Via NeoGAF]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Soulcalibur stabs XBLA through the heart

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

Looking for an upgraded fighting game with no widescreen support, online or modes to unlock? No? Well, if you change your mind Soulcalibur is now available on the Xbox Live Arcade. The classic fighter dropped as the lone release for the Arcade (as far as an actual game goes) and will hit your digital wallet up for 800 MS space-creds. Preparing gamers for the forthcoming Soul Calibur IV, the HD upgraded classic is a mixed bag. Probably one of the best fighters of its time, the XBLA exclusive feels so stripped down it would be more at home propped up on cinder blocks. Which sucks because it's still a rad game.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Geometry Wars 2 achievements leaked, ZOMG!

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

Well, well, well, looky what we have here. Somehow, the achievements for Geometry Wars 2 have been leaked onto the internets. Funny thing is, the game hasn't even been confirmed to exist. Crazy exciting super! But crazy exciting super in a good way.

The achievements (viewable after the jump) detail what sounds to be some sort of collection of various new and old Geometry Wars game modes including Geometry Wars: Waves which was included in PGR4. We say this only because the game's Phobia and Surf achievements mention Waves in their descriptions, but other achievements mention different game modes including "King" and "Deadline". We guess the most obvious proof that Geo Wars 2 will feature a compilation of new modes is the ever straight forward Unlock All Modes achievement.

We're pumped! We're excited! Bring on another round of Geometry Wars and another 200 Gamerscore! Yeah, yeah, we know we posted just the other day that the Live Arcade would be actually seeing a release of Mega Man 9. Arstechnica seemed to have gotten their hands on a Capcom E3 roster and it had MM9 listed as being for all three of the console digital download services, which looked to be a confirmation of earlier rumblings out of the OFLC that also said that the game would be multiplatform.

Apparently, that story made the rounds so much that Capcom got wind of it and contacted arstechnica to tell 'em that, well, there was a bit of a mistake on the release roster and that Mega Man 9 is currently slated "for WiiWare only." While the caveat of "currently" means that things could change in the future (this is Capcom, after all; the guys who ported DMC4 and Lost Planet to PC, and who swore that Resident Evil 4 was exclusive to Gamecube), we doubt whether any sort of XBLA release would end up happening for quite some time.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Soulcalibur bloodies up the XBLA this Wednesday

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

Sometimes rumors turn out to be true, and in the case of Soulcalibur making its way to the Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday ... well, that's true.

Just today, Microsoft announced that on the morning of Wednesday, July 2nd, old-school Soulcalibur will be releasing to the XBLA at the 800 Microsoft price point. While the long awaited sequel to the classic franchise has been confirmed for Nintendo's WiiWare download service for some time now, there was still quite a bit of speculation that that game would be releasing on more than just a Nintendo platform.

Mega Man 9 was originally revealed via an OFLC ratings board leak, and was listed there as a multiplatform release. But this was taken with a grain of salt as the OFLC has been known to list things as multiplatform which ended up not being so. Now apparently, someone over at arstechnica has gotten thier hands on a Capcom E3 roster list which seems to confirm that the blue bomber will be making his way to all download services, XBLA included. Since Capcom has been relativly good to the Live arcade in the past (Rocketmen, Commando 3, SFII, etc), we think it's safe to say that E3 will bring the official reveal of the 8-bit wonder.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

J Force Games promises "Best Indie Game Ever"

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

You may be asking yourself, "Self, who the hell is J Force Games." To tell you the truth, we don't really know. All we do know is that J Force Games has released a developer documentary video in which the developer claims it is working on "The Best Indie Game Ever." What is this game, you ask? Well, we don't know. The weird thing is that J Force doesn't know either, as a name hasn't been chosen yet. All we do know is that it's a shooter with an overhead perspective, as you can see in the concept art above. Also, the description notes that it has a lot of interesting characters such as "a modern soldier, a robot centipede, a ninja made of sand & glass, a spider-vampire hybrid, a ball-n-chain wielding samurai, a living black hole, an evil wizard, a super hero flower man, monster aliens, giant bugs, stampeding wildebeests, and zombies ... all in the same game." Well alright then.

Oh, and J Force Games assures us that the game (whatever it will be called), is indeed headed to the 360 (presumably on XBLA). Find the video documentary after the break.

In the latest update at the Penny Arcade website (or just "Penny Arcade" to the kids), Gabe gives the first sneak peak at Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode 2. You can see it above, the Hat Spider, whom Gabe notes is "as ferocious as he is fashionable" (note the skull hat). Actual details about Episode 2 aren't given, though Gabe does announce that it will be shown at the Penny Arcade Expo later this year. Fans of Episode One should take note, as if there wasn't already enough reason to attend PAX ....

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: Soulcalibur to hit XBLA next week

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

It looks like our crazy Xbox.com page theory might be right after all. According to the Japanese product page for the Xbox Live Arcade release of the original Soulcalibur, Namco Bandai has scheduled the classic fighter for release next week. Of course this date could change like so many delayed XBLA titles before it have but international page leaks usually pan out for release dates.

Clocking in at 800MS Points, Soulcalibur (XBLA) includes the standard HD upgrade and LIVE leaderboard support other retro revivals see but Namco Bandai has confirmed the title will not include online multiplayer support. While we still have fond memories of the 1999 Dreamcast release, we scratch our heads at the decision to opt out of the online versus upgrade. With Soul Calibur IV on the horizon we wonder, what's the point? Hopefully Namco Bandai will revisit the release and upgrade it with online support much like they did Tekken: Dark Resurrection for the PSN. But, we're not holding our breath.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

SF beta has issues, but no patch will be released

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

According to numerous posts over on the Capcom forums, the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta is a bit problematic. All kinds of beta participants are experiencing a few bugs, network issues and, even worse, complete lockups. Thankfully, Capcom hasn't turned a blind eye to unsatisfied Street Fighter beta participates, acknowledging the issues, but admitting that they will NOT be releasing a patch to fix the beta. The reason? It's a beta and the reason people are playing is to discover said bugs. And a while before that too. Hows about next week? Well if the trend continues as it has next week's XBLA releases will be dictated by this week's newly arrived xbox.com pages. The twin appearances in this case are Soulcalibur and Schizoid, the classic weapons-based fighter and the neon-colored co-op shooter, respectively. While Soulcalibur didn't ever really have much of a rumored release date to help corroborate this thing, Schizoid is set to release sometime in July, so we could definitely see the pattern continue next week. And as always, thar be screenshots!

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/soulcalibur-xbla/">Soulcalibur (XBLA)
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/soulcalibur-xbla/884439/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/soulcalibur-xbla/884438/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/soulcalibur-xbla/884437/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/soulcalibur-xbla/884436/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/soulcalibur-xbla/884435/">

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/schizoid-xbla/">Schizoid (XBLA)
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/schizoid-xbla/866921/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/schizoid-xbla/866920/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/schizoid-xbla/866919/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/schizoid-xbla/866918/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/schizoid-xbla/866917/">

[Source, Soulcalibur]
[Source, Schizoid]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

N+ DLC has gone out to Microsoft

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live Arcade

It certainly has been a while in coming (so much so that we were beginning to wonder if something bad had happened to it), but there's finally some news regarding N+'s downloadable content. In a new post over at the Metanet developer blog informs the world that the three DLC packs for N+ has been sent off to Microsoft for final certification before release.

Of the three packs one will be free, one will be multiplayer maps, and the level total for the whole shebang is over 750. Exactly how those seemingly disparate pieces of info come together for the exact details of each pack is still unknown. However we do know that the devs are shooting for 200pts for each of the pay-to-play packs, which seems like the perfect price point to us.

[Via Gamerbytes]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Blood Bowl Teaser Trailer

Filed under: Xbox Live Arcade, Videos

We're really happy to see a little more info about Blood Bowl after such a long hiatus on its news. Despite the fact that it isn't wholly original (it was a board game after all) it is of a genre that the 360 in general hasn't seen a whole lot of and plus, orcs make just about everything better.

Being a bit more serious though, the trailer really doesn't show much; but how much is there really to show off in a turn-based strategy game? True, the game does have a real-time option, but we already have Madden for that and it just seems to be a betrayal of the game's roots. And just like certain other highly anticipated games, we're still waiting on a firm release date.

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/blood-bowl/">Blood Bowl
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/blood-bowl/639712/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/blood-bowl/639711/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/blood-bowl/639710/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/blood-bowl/639709/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/blood-bowl/639707/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

X3F TV -- XBLA in Brief: Happy Tree Friends and Ticket to Ride

Filed under: Xbox Live Arcade, X3F TV

This week, XBLA in Brief takes on Happy Tree Friends and Ticket to Ride.
Hey kids! It's Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday and that can only mean one thing. That's right, it's time for some new XBLA games. Huzzah! This week's releases are Happy Tree Friends False Alarm and Ticket to Ride. False Alarm has you guiding your favorite furry friends through various hazards, doing your best to keep them from being sliced, diced, burned, or otherwise mutilated. Ticket to Ride, on the other hand, is a board game in which you relive the spirit of expansion brought on by the advent of railroads. In other words, you build trains. It's more fun than it sounds. Both are available now for 800 MS Points each. Stay tuned for the next XBLA in Brief and we'll tell you whether or not they're worth the scratch.

Source - Happy Tree Friends False Alarm on Xbox.com
Source - Ticket to Ride on Xbox.com

This morning Capcom flipped the switch on the special SSFIITHDR beta, allowing anyone who purchased the 800 MS point Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 to access the beta thus allowing fanboys' classic Street Fighter fists to fly. The sad news is that players can only choose from either Ryu or Ken (no Blanka? WTF!), but you'll just have to deal. Capcom also confirmed that the beta will last a few months, ending on August 20th.
Yeah we know the post title is a bit needlesssly grim. Let's face it, we're going to still be getting some information about releases from the ESRB. And hopefully some publishers simply won't much care about putting their games up there early. Others like Playful Entertainment, publishers of Ticket to Ride, seem to still want their ratings to go up at the last minute (TtR releases this week).

However, if we're to believe that the publishers of the other two XBLA games on the list (Rocket Riot and Cribbage) also want their games to pop up at the last minute, we could be looking at the first hint of next week's releases. Or we could just be paranoid about this whole ESRB thing.

Microsoft has been on such a quality control kick lately and then they go and do something like this. According to the incredibly misleading and ridiculous trailer for the game, Double D Dodgeball is going to be released to XBLA on July 30. Aside from the fact that the screens for the game look like a bad take off of Space Invaders and nothing at all like dodgeball, is the fact that Pirates VS Ninjas Dodgeball is also set to release during July; and that actually is a dodgeball game.

"Sent to die," are the words we just can't seem to get out of our heads for this one. Why, oh why, would MS want this on XBLA? Unless it costs something in the neighborhood of 200pts, we envision it getting delisted at the first possible opportunity.

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/double-d-dodgeball/">Double D Dodgeball
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/double-d-dodgeball/879912/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/double-d-dodgeball/879911/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/double-d-dodgeball/879910/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/double-d-dodgeball/879909/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/double-d-dodgeball/879908/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
