Right now, Amazon.com is offering BioShock for the nice price of $49 AND is throwing in The Darkness for FREE! Over on The Darkness' official MySpace page, Lord Sonatine has confirmed that they'll be releasing a multiplayer patch sometime in August to fix the lag issues that so many players are experiencing. Lord Sonatine explains that the problem stems from poor host upstream speeds which weren't caught while developing the game due to the studio's uber fast internet hookup. For now, they recommend hosting a match with less players which will help alleviate the bandwidth strain on the host.

On behalf of the hundreds of people we've heard complain about laggy The Darkness multiplayer we send a well deserved thank you to Starbreeze Studios for the patch. That is, if the patch will actually fix the lag problem. Stay tuned ...

[Via Xbox 360 Rally]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Darkness demo slithers onto the XBLM (finally)

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Marketplace, The Darkness

We were promised it in June, it was then delayed a few times, but it is finally here. Up on the XBLM this morning is a 1.27GB single player The Darkness demo featuring three campaign levels of death, darkness and more death. And if you don't already know, The Darkness has received generally favorable reviews for its campaign although most everyone agrees that its multiplayer is rather lackluster. But the demo is all about the campaign, so if you have yet to get your hands on The Darkness we advise giving the demo a download and experiencing first hand what black eels with teeth protruding from your body actually feels like.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fanboys fight for The Darkness winners revealed

Filed under: Fan stuff, The Darkness, Contests and Giveaways

We're proud to announce the winners of our Xbox 360/PS3 Fanboy The Darkness giveaway. Although Xbox 360 Fanboy dominated with a mountain of entries, we're still glad that the PS3 community stood by this excellent FPS. This week, both online and in-store, The Darkness is available for the low, low price of $49.99, but doesn't include the 2K Sports Darkling like Gamestop offers. Oh well, $10 is $10, so save some cash and pick the game up over at the city of circuits unless you are hell-bent on getting the 2K Sports Darkling. We've seen all the Darkness powers put to good use. Kill all the lights, yadda, yadda, yadda. What we haven't seen much, however, is multiplayer. Lucky for us, GameTrailers has posted a video showing off exactly that. While the multiplayer appears to offer the same run and gun action as the campaign, it also offers up a new shape-shifting twist. Players are allowed to turn into Darklings (the little goblin/imp things) at any time. As noted by the video, Darklings are small and agile, whereas humans have superior firepower. Honestly, it's a pretty neat little twist, one we're looking forward to trying. Check out the video after the break.
Continue reading Watch Darkness shape-shifting multiplayer

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Reminder: win The Darkeness from X3F

Filed under: The Darkness, Contests and Giveaways
Just a quick reminder for those of you who missed it on Friday (or don't look at our fabulous pinboxes on the right side of the page), we're still running our Fanboys Fight for The Darkness contest. We're having a little competition with PS3 Fanboy, you see. All you have to do is go to the official contest post and leave a comment that finishes this sentence:

"The 360 version of The Darkness is better than the PS3 version because ... Over at Gametrailers, diablokiller18 uploaded the first 25 minutes of The Darkness' single player story. Sure, the aspect ratio is wrong, and we're not entirely sure if he's "allowed" to do that, but it builds hype, and if the first review is any indication, the game is going to be a summer blockbuster anyway. Obviously, spoilers and potentially NSFW language can be found, so if you don't want to ruin the experience, we suggest you avert your eyes. Otherwise, embrace The Darkness and enjoy.

[Thanks Joshua]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Darkness gets reviewed and it's good

Filed under: News, Reviews, The Darkness

Fresh out of hell's oven is the first review for upcoming 360 release The Darkness and word on the street is that it's actually good. 1UP posted the first review and gave the game a whopping 9.0 out of a possible 10. They felt that the presentation, the look, the gameplay and overall incorporation of the Darkness features (tentacles and all) were very polished and fun. As the saying goes, "it just works". Completing the game will take an average of ten or so hours, but 1UP feels that players can easily get distracted by messing around with the physics engine or taking advantage of the game's down times by roaming the city. The only drawback to the game is its somewhat gimmicky multiplayer, which developer Starbreeze even admits shouldn't be taken too seriously. Overall, we're impressed by how much 1UP was impressed by the game and will be patiently watching metacritic for more reviews to hit the internet. Who knows, The Darkness could actually be a solid game.

[Thanks, intRvenous]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fanswag: Fanboys Fight for The Darkness

Filed under: Fan stuff, The Darkness, Contests and Giveaways

The Darkness, as you may have heard, is fast drawing in upon us. In celebration of this glorious gloom, 2K Games decided to give us 5 copies of the game. The only problem is, they didn't bother to tell us which version. As such, we have decided to collaborate with the heathens over at PS3 Fanboy. We came up with a cordial little contest, and we need your help to settle it. How will you do that? With a good old-fashioned flamewar, of course! All you have to do is:

Finish this sentence: "The 360 version of The Darkness is better than the PS3 version because ... "

Submit your idea to our comments section.

Two winners will be chosen from Xbox 360 Fanboy. Here's the kicker: if Xbox 360 Fanboy receives more entries than PS3 Fanboy, we'll also give away a third copy to another lucky winner. As an added bonus, all winners will receive a prize package from 2K Games including both the game and a special The Darkness comic. We'll accept entries until June 26, 2007, so get cracking. Please note that this giveaway is limited to U.S. residents only, ages 18 and older (it's an M rated game after all). One entry per person.

Click here for official rules and regulations

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Darkness demo gets held back

Filed under: News, Rumors, The Darkness

We just received a tip that The Darkness demo has hit an unforeseen road block and may not make it to the Marketplace before the game ships later this month. Being a subscriber to The Darkness' MySpace group, Ben Furneaux says that he received a subscribers only bulletin message from Lord Sonatine stating that the demo has been delayed, but will release as soon as possible. Again, we aren't cool enough to be subscribers to The Darkness' official MySpace page, so we didn't get the message to confirm its contents. But you can take Ben's word for it and check out the bulletin message he received, posted after the break. The Darkness can be stopped ... by Microsoft's certification team.

[Thanks, Ben Furneaux]
Continue reading The Darkness demo gets held back

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Achievements come out of the ... er ... Xbox 360 Achievements, the sly dogs, got their hands on the Achievement list for Starbreeze Studios' comic book adaption, The Darkness. Upon looking at the 50 Achievements available you can tell that there is a heavy emphasis on the multiplayer aspect of the game which we definitely like to see, although we can't tell if these require to be in ranked games in order to be unlocked, or if they can be performed in public matches. Our favorite from the list, would easily be "Knuckle, Meet Face", for indulging in your first melee kill. Dante described the 9th circle of Hell as a frozen wasteland, made so by the chilling wind created by the Devil's wings. Meanwhile, Hell as depicted in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (truly a masterwork of the 20th century) gives its inhabitants a wide array of personalized punishments from which a sinner must choose. In The Darkness, it seems, Hell and its appearance are completely at the whim of the Devil. In the video above it is depicted as a war zone (reminiscent of WWII) with a blackened sky and withered landscape. We have to admit, listening to the Devil say "this is my dream of you" is pretty damned creepy. Check out another video (featuring Pestilence, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse) after the break.
Continue reading Video: Hell as seen in The Darkness

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Demon Arms are evil and know how to kill

Filed under: News, Videos, The Darkness

A few days ago The Darkness awoke from its slumber and released a new teaser video featuring those imitating little Demon Arms. The juiciest of these tidbits is the revelation that a demo is slated to be released before the game hits store shelves. The bulletin notes that the demo won't be finished in time to make any magazine covers, so it will download only. Currently, the demo is scheduled to arrive approximately 3 weeks before the title debuts on June 25th, so it should be on Marketplace in the first week of June or so.

Also mentioned in the bulletin, a new video has been created, though it has yet to escape the evil clutches of the "certain voluntarily regulatory agencies." We can't imagine what sort of agency would prevent the distribution of horrifyingly violent material, but then again we're to desensitized to judge anymore. The bulletin also reveals that those who pre-order the title from EB or GameStop get an exclusive 2K Sports Darkling that wields a baseball bat. None the less, we love the art direction on the cover, from the golden glow from all the eyes and logo, the muted palette with the bluish-black overtone.

All in all it looks very sexy, and we can't wait to get our hands on this game in just shy of two months. That, and we can't post about The Darkness without mentioning how badass Mike Patton is, as the voice of the title character. That is until yesterday when IGN posted an exclusive video interview with the game's producer featuring not only gameplay footage, but an explanation of the Darkness' powers and what you'll be able to do with them. Think of the Darkness as a consuming force, something that is using you to showcase its super powers. Got it? Now, with it you'll be able to use it Dr. Octopus style on enemies by lifting objects, reaching new heights and biting off other's heads. Players also control little Darklings who have different personalities and are just ... evil. Not only that, but the player can strategically shoot out lights and move about in the dark with no problem, because you have super heightened senses. Makes sense huh? They also touch on various multiplayer features and other interesting tidbits in the video.

There's a boat load of new information and gameplay footage in this video interview that we can't possibly touch on and we highly recommend giving it a watch. Just be sure to come back and tell us what you think. The Darkness will be hitting retailers June 29th, so be prepared.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Darkness gets a June birth date

Watch out, we're one step closer to being consumed by The Darkness. The United States will be experiencing The Darkness on June 25th, while our European friends will be playing on June 29th. And the nice folks over at GameTrailers have their GDC section quarantined off and ready to showcase some of the best Xbox 360 media. You can sit back and watch a new Portal video, maybe some Mercenaries 2, a Fable 2 dog demo, or The Darkness. It's every video they have to offer from GDC that is Xbox 360 related. And we definitely recommend watching the Fable 2 dog demo, because it just might make you think differently about this new "revolutionary" feature. GDC may be over, but your video watching has just begun.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
