With the giant, lumbering shadow of Grand Theft Auto IV slowly receding, publishers are responding in kind, slowly releasing new titles. Testing the water, if you will. It seems appropriate, then, that this week's biggest Xbox 360 release is Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm, a game about (deadly) fishing. There is also one other title to look out for, that being Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. We're trying really hard to drum up some enthusiasm for that one. Actually, who are we kidding? We're not trying at all.

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/deadliest-catch-alaskan-storm-1/">Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/deadliest-catch-alaskan-storm-1/665736/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/deadliest-catch-alaskan-storm-1/665735/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/deadliest-catch-alaskan-storm-1/665734/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shipping this week: still GTAIV

Filed under: News, Shipping this week

It seems that publishers everywhere foresaw the Grand Theft Auto IV effect with great clarity. Apart from the obligatory release of the Iron Man game last week (gotta tie in with the movie release, y'know), everyone is keen to stay away from Rockstar's behemoth. What we're getting at here, lest you haven't figured it out, is that there are no new games on the Xbox 360 this week. Don't feel too bad though. After all, it's not like anyone is done with GTAIV yet anyway. Oh sure, you might have already beaten the game (like Xav), but no one is done with it. Come to think of it, there are games inside of GTAIV. If you haven't played them yet, those are kind of like new releases ....

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shipping this week: good luck Iron Man edition

Filed under: News, Shipping this week

Remember when an analysts predicted that the release of Grand Theft Auto IV could derail the ticket sales of the Iron Man movie that releases this week? While the idea that big video game launches hindering movie releases is nothing new -- they said the same thing about Halo 3 -- we have one more prediction to make about the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV: it's going to put a serious damper on sales of the Iron Man video game. You see, they both come out this week. Sure, a game might steal money from a film, but a big game will definitely steal money from a smaller game. They will be competing for the same shelf space after all.

Well, competing might be too kind a word.

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shipping this week: something edition

Filed under: News, Shipping this week

We're going to have to come clean and say we know virtually nothing about NBA Ballers: Chosen One. Since November of last year, we've had an announcement, some screens, and that's about it. It hasn't made a splash on Metacritic just yet with the only review thus far coming from GamePro (the magazine gives it 60% according to Metacritic). Still, previous entries in the series have done fairly well, so here's hoping Chosen One can keep up. Whether basketball is your thing or not, you should know that it's your only choice this week. Maybe something more interesting will show up next week.

[Via Joystiq]

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/nba-ballers-chosen-one/">NBA Ballers: Chosen One
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/nba-ballers-chosen-one/739141/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/nba-ballers-chosen-one/739140/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/nba-ballers-chosen-one/739139/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/nba-ballers-chosen-one/739138/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/nba-ballers-chosen-one/739137/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shipping this week: *another tumbleweed* edition

Filed under: News, Shipping this week

In some ways, the fact that no games are releasing for the Xbox 360 this week is a blessing. No, not for the general game buying public, but for lazy bloggers like us. It saves us the trouble of coming up with a cogent theme or drumming up some reason to be excited by the latest furniture varnishing sim (actually, scratch that, we would be totally up for a furniture varnishing sim). Hell, we even get to reuse the same image. So, um, nothing releasing this week. We are left with but one theory: with the GTAIV release date held in secrecy for so long, other publishers just crossed the month of April off of their calendars as a precaution.

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shipping this week: *tumbleweed* edition

Filed under: News, Shipping this week

Nothing to see here, folks. Move along. There is not one Xbox 360 game releasing this week. Not a single one. it's a barren week, so go find something else to do. We suggest actually playing the games you own. After all, if all you ever did was buy games, when would you find time to play them, right? Oh, and let's not forget Ikaruga effing finally hits Xbox Live Arcade this week. Then again, it's not like it's that surprising. After all, the game in question is Call of Duty 4 and there is only one other game releasing this week. That game, if you just have to know, is Smash Court Tennis 3. No offense to Smash Court Tennis 3, but it's frickin' Call of Duty 4, right? Actually, to be more precise, it's Call of Duty 4 Game of the Year Edition. The first "next-gen" game evar is finally on its way to retail shelves. That's right, Dark Sector, the one time space stealth action game turned Eastern Europe stealth action game, will soon see the light of day. Is it any good? We'll have to wait and see. But wait! There's more! Not only are we getting Dark Sector this week, but also Universe at War: Earth Assault and Viking: Battle for Asgard. Viking is a hack and slash action game in the vein of God of War, while Universe at War: Earth Assault is a new entry in the RTS genre. Readers may recall that Universe at War is somewhat unique as it offers cross platform play between the PC and Xbox 360. Given the 360's lack of mouse and keyboard support -- and the fact that the PC version has been out for months -- we're anxious to see if console players will even stand a chance.

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shipping this week: roll them bones edition

Filed under: News, Shipping this week

It's sort of a lonely week for new releases. It's not that we aren't seeing anything worthwhile, though. Nope, this week we have the much awaited sequel to Rainbow Six Vegas, sagely titled Rainbow Six Vegas 2 to in order to nullify any confusion. Remember, this is the last time you'll be getting your 6 on in Vegas, so get it while the gettin's good (alternately, you could wait until it goes down in price and get it while the gettin's better). Also releasing this week is the latest curiosity from Sega, Sega Superstars Tennis. Alas, it seems Sega has more trouble wedging its beloved characters into the sports genre than Nintendo does, as the game has thus far received only fair to middling reviews.

[Via Joystiq]

Also, football (the non-US kind) fans have something to be happy about in Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. We're not quite sure which one tops the list honestly. Army of Two is probably the most talked about recently. Given its rocky development cycle and the fact that there aren't any major reviews up yet, we're remaining cautious. Bully: Scholarship Edition also releases this week, marking the first time that Microsoft console owners will get a chance to try it out (now with achievements!). And then there's Major League Baseball 2K8, about which we haven't the foggiest. Anyone out there longing to pick up one of these this week?
I'm taking over Richard's "Shipping this week" duties simply because he's a busy man and I'm a kind hearted soul. So, here comes the informative bits ...

This week's Xbox 360 releases aren't plentiful or overly stellar, but they do have one grammatical thing in common. A colon. Yes sir, a colon brings all three of this week's releases together under one unified umbrella of release week unification ... of sorts. It's the punctuation binder that is what eggs are to meatloaf. Without it, this week would be a chaotic mess of randomness. So, be thankful for the colon and be thankful for this week's new Xbox 360 releases. Game on.

The biggest game this week is undoubtedly Lost Odyssey. Of course, given its nature, Lost Odyssey will draw one of two reactions: excited, nerdy screams or decidedly protracted yawns. X3F seems to be relatively split on the subject (we all dig the commercial though). Not to fear if Japanese RPGs aren't your thing though, as we've also got some Conflict: Denied Ops action and even some new Xbox Originals to download. First of all, we should mention that Turok is officially out this week (though it was released early in some areas; we saw it at Blockbuster yesterday). The star of the show this week is probably Devil May Cry 4 though, what with its demon slaying antics and longstanding pedigree. But wait, what's this? There's more? Yes, it seems the post-holiday dearth has finally ended (for the moment anyway), as this week sees three more titles as well. All told we have:

Devil May Cry 4

Turok

Culdcept Saga

The Spiderwick Chronicles

Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore

See, there's something for everybody (even gamers dying for a CCG / Monopoly hybrid). Not bad. In fact, it's just about the manliest game it could possibly be. Let's take a look at the facts. One, you play Joseph Turok, a burly, burly man with a jaw hewn from marble and cheekbones to die for. Two, he kills gun toting soldiers using a bow that fires exploding arrows. Three, he hunts dinosaurs with a knife. Finally, don't tell anyone, but we have it on good authority that he goes bear wrestling with Chuck Norris every other Saturday. So yeah, Turok looks to be a game you can show off to impress menfolk without fear of reprisal. Oh, and it's the only new game on 360 this week, so here's hoping it's actually good.

Update: While GameStop notes that the game launches this week, many readers have pointed out that the official Turok site still maintains the February 5 release date. In other words, it looks like gamers will be waiting another week before controlling Turok and his manly shoulders.
Continue reading Shipping this week: manly edition [update]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shipping this week: bad driving edition

Filed under: News, Shipping this week

You know, in most cases -- most cases, mind you -- driving around like a maniac is a bad thing. It makes people angry, which in turn makes them drive more recklessly. Most importantly, it puts the life of the driver and the lives of those around that driver in danger. Burnout, however, is not most cases. In Burnout, you'd be crazy not to drive like a maniac. It's like some kind of road rage fantasy. Do whatever the hell you feel like. Drive on the wrong side of the road. Ignore that red light. Pass on the right. Yeah, we know it's naughty, but that's what makes it feel so good.

Oh, and just so you know, Burnout Paradise is the sole Xbox 360 release this week. We have to warn you now, though, don't expect anything that's truly new. In other words, any games you receive this week will be at least a week old. What we're getting at here, lest you haven't figured it out, is that there aren't any new games coming out this week. This week we have one solitary game being released, said game being MX vs. ATV Untamed. There may be a few kids out there wishing for a real ATV this Christmas and this game can't help but remind us that ATVs are dangerous, dangerous machines. The mere word "ATV" conjures many memories of maternal voices warning us of the danger of what they called "four wheelers." Combined with the horror stories we've received from friends throughout the years, we'd say it's probably better to go with a video game than the real thing. Well, it's safer at least.

[Via Joystiq. There are two games hitting the Xbox 360 this week. Those games are NCAA March Madness 2008 (wait, it's December, isn't it?) and Madden NFL Football 08 Español. So, if football is your thing, maybe you've got something to be happy about. Us, though, we're just a tad envious of the Playstation 3 this week. Those lucky Sony lovers can get their hands on Unreal Tournament III this week. So, congrats PS3 fanboys, you got one over on us this week. Enjoy it while you can. We guess we'll just have to go back to playing Mass Effect. Or Assassin's Creed. Or The Orange Box. For the last month, we've been positively saturated with new game releases. Many of them have been good games too, injected into us like so much delicious turkey-flavoring, making us nice and tender. Now, it seems the game industry has gorged on a little too much turkey itself, inducing a deep sleep and a week off from the tedious process of releasing new games. Yes, it seems only History Channel: Battle for the Pacific opted for the ham instead, as it is the only Xbox 360 game releasing this week.

Allow us to suggest (as does Joystiq) that you crack open your (hopefully) metaphorical game refrigerator and scrounge for some leftovers.
