Let's go off-topic for a moment. Watchmen is probably one of the greatest graphic novels ever created and the film looks totally rad. From director Zack Snyder, the guy who directed the film adaptation of Frank Miller's 300, and partially penned by David Hayter, of Metal Gear fame, it looks like it's going to be one helluva flick.

The problem with creating a great movie is that, inevitably, someone will want to create a game based on it. Variety is reporting that Watchmen is no exception to this rule but the game based on the film (based on the graphic novel) is taking a different approach. Warner Bros. has announced it will release two downloadable episodic games on Xbox Live, PC and PSN to coincide with the theatrical and DVD releases of the film.

Developed by Deadline Games, which is currently working on Faith and a .45, we don't know much about the content of the games but we hope a smaller game will work out better than licensed titles of the past. We also hope for world peace and an end to fanboy flame wars -- guess how that's going so far?

[via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Best of The Who available now!

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live Marketplace

While it's possible that the demo of the Norse inspired dungeon crawler might not give one the full flavor of the game considering how story and loot driven the experience is supposed to be. Still, something is better than nothing, especially with a game that has been so divisive as this one. While we're not exactly sure just how many people out there are still interested in such a thing, Codemasters, the GRiD developers, are holding a contest for its players to design a livery (skin) for the above pictured car. The rules are real simple and you don't need to be an art whiz or anything. Basically, download the picture package from here, and do your best to create an official "Codemasters Racing Team" livery incorporating the Codemasters logo into the design.

Going a step further, Codemasters artists will then turn that into game art for the car. And not only does the winner get his (or her) car in the game, but they also get " a load of GRID swag" and "a framed high-resolution render of your car as it will appear in the game." The contest ends July 25th, get designing!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: NG2 gets worthwhile DLC July 25?

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live Marketplace, Rumors

Thank you sharp-eyed forum posters, you may have spotted something that could mean Ninja Gaiden 2 will actually get some content worth paying for. Mentioned over at NeoGAF, and spotted somewhere on the XBL Marketplace, was the mention that NG2 will get a downloadable mission mode on the 25th of this month.

The mission mode that was in the original iteration was incredibly popular among the franchise faithful for its focus on the game's main strength: pure combat. There are of course no details on how the implementation will work, but as long as it isn't just more of the Tests of Valor (we're really tired of that environment) we'll be ready to shell out the points if this hits on the 25th. Anyone else out there spot this on the Marketplace yet?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thrashing footage of 'I Am Murloc' in action

Filed under: Downloads, Xbox Live, Fan stuff

With Activision and Blizzard working together to achieve total world domination, the fan favorite track "I Am Murloc" was released free for Guitar Hero III on Thursday. Surprisingly the World of Warcraft based track is no slouch in the difficulty department and, while it isn't a replacement for "Through the Fire and Flames," it may pose a challenge for nimble fingered casual players. Whether or not you enjoy the World of Warcraft reference, the song is a nice added bonus for gamers who are looking to freshen up their Guitar Hero III experience as they wait on Guitar Hero: Aerosmith or more information on Guitar Hero: World Tour.

Update: Readers are telling us that this is actually a custom Guitar Hero II track, but you get the idea of what to expect. Think of it as a dramatic re-enactment of what you'll get! Yeah, sorry for the error.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

N+ DLC has gone out to Microsoft

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live Arcade

It certainly has been a while in coming (so much so that we were beginning to wonder if something bad had happened to it), but there's finally some news regarding N+'s downloadable content. In a new post over at the Metanet developer blog informs the world that the three DLC packs for N+ has been sent off to Microsoft for final certification before release.

Of the three packs one will be free, one will be multiplayer maps, and the level total for the whole shebang is over 750. Exactly how those seemingly disparate pieces of info come together for the exact details of each pack is still unknown. However we do know that the devs are shooting for 200pts for each of the pay-to-play packs, which seems like the perfect price point to us.

[Via Gamerbytes]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Marathon DLC (Jjaro Map Pack) hitting tomorrow

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live, Xbox Live Marketplace

We here at X3F love our old-school FPS's just as much as the new-school ones, and at a price of 250MSpts, the upcoming DLC for Marathon 2: Durandal looks to get us back into the archaic swing of things. The new Jjaro Map Pack will hit the Marketplace tomorrow and includes twelve multiplayer maps, two Achievements (worth 30pts total) and three new multiplayer modes (King of the Hill, Kill the Man with the Ball, and Tag).

For those obsessed with such things, the Achievement details can be found after the break. Oh, and according the post at 360sync, the devs will be Live and playing on the night of release.
Continue reading Marathon DLC (Jjaro Map Pack) hitting tomorrow

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GTA IV DLC delayed, new release date set

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live, Xbox Live Marketplace

Now that GTA IV has been out for enough time to have gamers get a good handle on its workings, one would think that it'd be the time to release good news about the $50 million worth of content that was supposed to lure gamers to the 360 version. Instead, the exclusive DLC episodes will hitting in the first quarter of fiscal year 2009 (which actually begins in 2008). Specifically, the new release window for the DLC is November 1st 2008 to January 31st 2009, and funnily enough that's about all the specifics there is on it. See, this is where there should've been an announcement of good news! And with this fall being as full as any other in the industry just how popular will a GTA IV DLC purchase be then?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Civilization Revolution demo hitting Thursday

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live Marketplace
The turn-based strategy genre is rather under represented on the 360 and the upcoming Civilization Revolution should help to fix that. While the traditionally hardcore conquer-the-world game is rather PC centric, there are tweaks to the gameplay and control scheme that should allow console gamers to get a handle on things fast. Of course, with the release of the demo at 2am on Thursday, gamers should get the chance to give the changes a try for themselves. Games of Civ can go on for hours, so just what form the demo will take should be interesting to find out. Even if it is just a simplified port, the 360 needs to expand its library with more games like this, so give the demo a download tomorrow.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Japanese XBLM to get NG2 demo on 5/30

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live Marketplace

After the demo news disappeared from the game's official site, many of us were worried that there would be no Ninja Gaiden 2 demo at all. Fortunately the demo does exist, and it should be online shortly. In Japan. Only.

Now we know that the 360 is no big success in the East, so why not just release the demo everywhere at once? No one knows. Posting on NeoGAF, Chris Paladino (Hi Chris!) of Gamerscore blog confirmed that the demo would be hitting in Japan, and that there would be a demo release in the other territories "soon". Whether the demo would have helped sales of the game pre-launch or not is going to be a moot point soon. As the reviews slowly roll in and decisions are made about whether or not to purchase the game, Ninja Gaiden 2's demo has yet to see release to the Marketplace. For some time now, the game's xbox.com page had a message for its readers, telling them to: "Get your hands on the free demo coming to Xbox LIVE Marketplace in May."

While it is true that May isn't over until the end of the week, the xbox.com page no longer has the message promising the demo's arrival, and instead points readers to the Ask a Ninja videos. This could mean a host of things really: the demo has been held up, or it's not coming at all, or it's coming but the page has been changed early. In all honesty we hope for the latter, because after getting our hands on it we can't wait to do it again!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

C&C3: Kane's Wrath - Command Stick Trailer

As real-time strategy games have their moment in the sun on the Xbox 360, the question of control always lingers. Can a controller simulate a mouse and keyboard properly to play an RTS?

The answer is no. It can't. That's why developers are rethinking the way RTS games handle on consoles and so far they've been pretty successful. Now the question is based on speed. Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath introduces a new scheme to the mix hoping to correct that problem with the new Command Stick. Promising to reduce the amount of clicking required to complete simple tasks like building your base and training new units, the Command Stick is expected to speed up the overall experience of the console RTS.

The video is embedded in low quality above, but for those purists who need to see it in HD jump over to Big Download and download the full trailer in its high-resolution hotness.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Team Fortress 2 DLC details being worked out

As PC gamers have known for some time, Team Fortress 2 has been receiving some significant updates, including more achievements and weapons. For some time it was unknown what sort of release these updates would see on 360, the existence of the achievements hinting that it would see some sort of release. Speaking at EA's Spring Showcase, Doug Lombardi of Valve said that there would be details coming soon on the content and confirmed that it would be seeing release. Apparently the devs were waiting for enough new content to create a DLC "Pack", which is more conducive to the 360's downloadable content structure. Unfortunately, there is no word now as to whether the pack will be free like its PC counter-part. Hopefully the forthcoming info including good news about the DLC's pricing.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band DLC for 5/27: The Cars

The next newly announced piece of DLC for all the rockers out there will be hitting the Rock Band store on the 27th and is going to be the self-titled Cars album. After all the issues that surrounded the game's closed beta, all online players will be able to try it for themselves come the beginning of June. For those who pre-ordered the game though, the demo will be available May 29, presumably via a download code. Some of the major issues in the beta were of course the much discussed purchasable weapons, as well as a few graphical issues. With the demo being seen by far more eyes than the beta, EA needs to make sure that they can show something that won't disappoint those who try it. Battlefield: Bad Company's combined single and multiplayer demo will be live for public download on June 5.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Burnout Paradise Bogart Update hits early

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live

It seems Criterion isn't any kind of slouch with their downloadable content, it's free, it's coming more often and they've been keeping us informed about it. Now they're doing us one better and releasing their "Bogart" update early. So early that it's online now in fact. The Bogart update contains a whole host of little things, and shouldn't be confused with the Cagney update that includes the new game modes (what's with the old-school actor names anyway?). Bogart huh? We'll take it: "Here's looking at you, kid" now g'won, get downloading.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Alone in the Dark demo in early May

The survival horror genre hasn't been to big on the Xbox in general, recent releases not withstanding of course. And Atari's fifth series entry is going to be one of the big games to tide scare-happy gamers over until the ever awaited other fifth game in a series, Resident Evil 5. Even though Alone in the Dark 5 was pushed back to June 24th, it's expected to sell well and we're glad that there'll be a demo long in advance of release. Set tentatively for release in early May, gamers should have well over a month before the game hits shelves to evaluate it in some form.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Guitar Hero III gets Def Leppard DLC

Filed under: News, Downloads, Xbox Live

It's been a while since we've heard any big Guitar Hero III news. The assault of Rock Band and its variety and scope of DLC shoved GHIII out of the limelight for many. Whether this new development is any sort of attempt to bring back the game's popularity or not, we can't help but think that this would do better in Rock Band. Basically, Def Leppard is going to be releasing its new single "Nine Lives" via GHIII before any retail or online release. The song will be available in a three song pack that will be online for download April 24th in the US and May 8th in the UK. The other two songs in the pack include "Rock of Ages" and "Photograph".

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kane & Lynch DLC coming, and for free to boot

According to Godfree over at gamertagradio, tomorrow Eidos will reveal their downloadable content for the controversial Kane and Lynch: Dead Men. Godfree's early info says that the DLC will take the form of four multiplayer maps for the Fragile Alliance gameplay mode. Not only that, but the maps are supposedly free, and are said to go live on April the 17th. The maps will not be separate and will be packaged together in a single piece of downloadable content apparently called, ahem, The Dope Bag, with each map within containing its own specific scenario.

While free DLC is always a good thing, we just can't seem to get excited about this one. How about you readers? Are you Kane & Lynch owners out there ready to give this a try?

[Thanks Godfree!]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
