It's almost as if major retailers don't even try to lure us into their stores with flashy deals or "wow!" offers after the holidays pass. So, this week, we've got a few deals to share with you, but nothing that'll make you scream with joy. Sorry.

This week Target is only offering one video game related deal and it's our good friend Assassin's Creed for a pretty fine $38. Heading over to Best Buy, you'll find Tony Hawk's Proving Ground for $39 and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe for $29. Our final stop on our whirlwind tour of Sunday deal searching is Circuit City. And they don't have anything other than possibly MX vs ATV Untamed for $49. Though, that deal is a yawn fest. But we didn't give up on old Circuit City as we had a hunch that they were hiding something. We were right.

Circuit City is holding a 3-Day Mega Sale, which are online only deals good through Tuesday that are much better than their Sunday ad. Deals like Soldier of Fortune for $39, Stuntman: Ignition for $29, Beowolf for $19, the HD DVD player for $159 and (our favorite deal) the Chatpad included Messenger Kit for $19. Sneaky Circuit City, always keeping their cards held close. If so, swing by your local Best Buy store and for $38 you can grab a copy of Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty 4. And we think we can all agree that $38 for one of these two superb games is a pretty fine deal. Also, if by chance Best Buy slaps a "sold out" sign on either of these titles, don't get worked up into a tizzy. We're sure Circuit City or any other kind-hearted retailer would be willing to do a price match. Hurry, this deal and your holiday shopping time is going fast ... Enter the often mentioned plot of Electronic Arts gobbling up Ubisoft. Apparently, that task has been made much more difficult, and it's all thanks to Assassin's Creed. You may recall that Ubisoft recently announced that the game managed to sell 2.5 million copies worldwide. It seems that this sales push has upped Ubisoft's market value to 4.3 billion dollars. The upshot of all this is that Ubisoft may now be too expensive for EA. With two ton gorillas seemingly forming all around them, EA is sure to be feeling the pressure of no longer being on top. The industry is watching with bated breath to see what happens next.

Read - Ubisoft's assassin and the creed of creative defence (registration required)

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Video: Altair the schmuck

Filed under: Fan stuff, Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed. And yet, it looks like Altair is perfectly adept at the nuances of physical comedy. The first pic is the one you see above and comes from the crazily creative Halo 3 community who decided to re-create the famous Iwo Jima flag raising (high-res, thanks Halonut1) in Valhalla. It's an effort we feel to be tribute worthy. And if you're not impressed with flag raisings or Halo 3 then you should check out the Optimus Prime cameo in Assassin's Creed. We're proud to say that we had a geeky chuckle when we spotted it.

So ends our lazy Saturday blog post of picture awesomeness, now you can go back to your regularly scheduled lazy Saturday programming. According to metacritic, Assassin's currently has 15 reviews posted with the average rating working out to be around 84 out of 100. It's an average rating that is pretty good, but far from 90+ games like BioShock, Halo 3, Orange Box and CoD4. So what's the problem? Well, the low reviews seem to focus on the game's negatives like a short campaign, repetitive sequences and odd design decisions all tainted with (what we feel to be) a bit of over expectation. It's a classic case of disappointments weighing greater on the review scale than the positives.

We haven't had a chance to play the retail build of the game quite yet, so we're interested in hearing what those of you who have played it think. Has Assassin's Creed fulfilled your every hope and desire or has its minor imperfections ruined the experience? Tell us what's up. Until then, we'll just wait and see where the game's average moves after more reviews get tallied.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Assassin's Creed music up for download

If you pay attention to video game music at all, there is one name you've likely heard before: Jesper Kyd. One of the industry's most prolific composers, Kyd has been around since the Sega Genesis (ah, The Adventures of Batman & Robin: mediocre game, great soundtrack). Most recently, Kyd has been behind the soundtracks for Kane & Lynch and Assassin's Creed, both of which are available this week. In celebration of the release of Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft has released two of Kyd's tracks from the game, hosted by Gamertag Radio. The two tracks -- "City of Jerusalem" and "Flight Through Jerusalem" -- aptly exemplify the Middle Eastern setting and could easily be heard in a feature film (perhaps an Assassin's Creed film). Well, you get an Australian / New Zealand Assassin's delay, that's what you get. Our fellow fanboys in Aussieland will have to wait an extra seven days before they get their Assassin's Creed fix due to troubles getting the discs out to retail. And it's a shame too, because we know how much Aussies love their Assassin's (and cuddly kangaroos). After getting through only half of our (deeply loved) South Park we could only think one thing ... holy Assassin's Creed commercial abuse Batman! Seriously, there must have been a solid ten minutes of Assassins commercials that aired during the 30 minute episode, so much so we don't think there were any other commercials played besides Comedy Central's own. So many commercials, we were starting to wonder if Ubisoft bought a stake of Comedy Central or lined Matt and Trey's pockets with the other half of Assassins' marketing budget. But after the episode concluded and our commercial intake ended, we couldn't complain. We'd be lying to say that we didn't enjoy all ten minutes of the Assassins footage. We'd also be lying if we didn't tell you that later we hopped into our car, headed to our local retailer and picked up a copy of Heroin Hero. It was an interesting night.

We've wondered how exactly combat will play out, how fleeing enemies works and if the counter weapon system would be effective and enjoyable. And it's possible the Ubisoft crew heard our worried cries, because today they tried to calm our Assassins anxiety with a new video titled Developer Diary: Fight System. It's a super brief and basic overview of how the controls work during fights and combat in Assassins, but maybe it'll put your control worries to rest ... if at least for a bit.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Famitsu reviews Assassin's Creed: 37/40

As if we needed further proof that November will assassinate your wallet, Famitsu has heaped glowing praise atop Assassin's Creed. According to a forum post on the Ubisoft forums, Famitsu has given the title a very respectable 37/40, with the individual reviews standing at 10, 8, 9, and 10. Incidentally, Famitsu handed the same overall score to Halo 3. There are some tiny scans of the reviews on the forums, but our Kanji is a little rusty. Thankfully, someone went to the trouble of summing things up. Apparently, the Famitsu reviewers were impressed by the story, presentation, and addicting acrobatics, noting that Assassin's Creed is a true next-gen title. Some knocks against it are the one button combat, confusing map, and occasional camera problems. All in all, it sounds pretty solid. Good news for gamers, bad news for bank accounts.

[Via Evil Avatar]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Assassin's Creed goes for gold, stabs it

We'll kids, we've got good news and bad news. The good news is that Ubisoft's medieval sneak-a-thon, Assassin's Creed, has gone gold and has a confirmed release date of November 13. It shall be "good times".

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Assassin's Creed achievements stalk the web

Achieve360Points has uncovered the achievements for Assassin's Creed. Most of the achievements are of the "perform a certain action X times" variety. Some of them involve finding flags, making stealth kills, or performing leaps of faith, for example. One of the more intriguing achievements, Hungerer of Knowledge, reads "See 85% of all the memory glitches." We're guessing that has something to do with the mysterious anachronisms seen in the trailers. Also, thirteen of the forty-four achievements are secret and carry a value of 20-50 points. Could these have something to do with the closely guarded plot of Assassin's Creed?

Hit the "read" link for the full list of achievements.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Video: Assassin's Creed gameplay ... wow

Filed under: News, Assassin's Creed, Videos

We guess the video above could be considered a spoiler due to it being eight minutes of gameplay footage, but holy wow is it good times and we just had to share it with you. As you can see in the picture above, the packaging is reminiscent of the BioShock collector's edition where the figure, game and extra goodies are all conveniently boxed together. Thumbs up to that. And then there is the Altair figure in all its Assassin's Creed figure glory (larger picture here). Thumbs up to the Altair figure for being so damn cool. He'll fit right in with the home we made for our Big Daddy figure.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Assassin's comic reveals some more secrets

Making its way onto the internet (for your leaked enjoyment) in fully scanned form is an Assassin's Creed comic book that was given out at a recent EB Games conference compliments of Ubisoft. But what's so spectacular about this comic book you ask? Well, just a basic setup of the secretly secret Assassin's Creed storyline and hints at what the game is all about ... that's all. So, if you need that instant gratification and want to know a few tidbits about the game's storyline then go already, click and make the jump to page through the comic feature. We're not sure how much the comic will "ruin" the storyline, but we're chickens and don't want to take a look.

[Via Digg]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq talks with Jade Raymond of Assassin's Creed

Joystiq recently got a chance to sit down with Jade Raymond, producer of the upcoming super sneaky kill-a-thon Assassin's Creed. Don't let her harsh, unforgiving exterior fool you. She's actually quite personable, apparently. The interview discusses all things Assassiin's Creed, including crowd-based gameplay, personalizing Altair (the game's protagonist), and the whole "games as art" debate. It's a short read, but it is most definitely sweet. Oh, and the interview contains the word "Holodeck." That alone should be enough to get some of our Trekkie readers to click through. Seriously though, hit the "read" link and check it out.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Assassin's Creed trailer does the trick

A new trailer for Assassin's Creed has sneaked onto the web (see what we did there?). The trailer, which looks to be a cinematic from the game, features a group of apparently evil men trying to figure out what to do about a particularly nasty problem. As you can imagine, Altair, the game's eponymous assassin, has caused this group no end of trouble. Without ruining it, let's just say that they don't figure out what to do by the end of the trailer. Honestly, the more we see of this game, the more excited we are. Check it out (see it in HD here) and tell us what you think.

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
