NPD: Price cuts spur Sept. Xbox 360 sales

The September NPD hardware and software sales numbers just came in and just as our analyst friend predicted, the Xbox 360 saw a dramatic sales increase thanks to Microsoft's aggressive price cutting efforts.

During the month of September, the Xbox 360 sold a pretty impressive 347.2K units while the Playstation 3 sold a (more than expected) 232.4K units and the Wii is well ... in a league of its own. It sold 687K consoles in September. As far as software goes, we're impressed at Star Wars: The Force Unleashed's numbers, selling 610K on the 360 alone and over 1 million across all platforms. The 360 also claimed four of the top software sales slots including Rock Band 2 and Mercenaries 2. Check the break for a complete listing of September NPD sales.

Video: Faith's animated run story

Continuing EA's exploration of her origins, the latest Mirrors' Edge "Run Story Trailer" shows us how Faith perfected her acrobatic skills and how she learned the ways of the messenger. The Mirror's Edge animated trailer (after the break) also shows us that flashlights are not an effective tool for taking down an enemy from a long range and that Faith isn't able to smile. Ever.

Video: Fable 2 ad asks us to choose our destiny

In the wake of Fable 2's impending release, Microsoft and Lionhead Studios just launched a new Fable 2 Destiny advertisement which is, well ... good.

The new ad doesn't push Fable 2's visuals, gameplay or even the friendly little pooch that's always by your side. Instead, their latest ad centers in on the hero you become and the choices you makes that determine what you'll become. Evil, good, clean, dirty, tattooed or on fire, it's your choice. It's a great ad and we're totally loving the flickering candle effect.

Video: Abusive Gears of War 2 multiplayer

If you're on the hunt for a few minutes of Gears of War 2 multiplayer footage, we recommend you watch the gory-delicious video above.

IGN put together a nice Gears 2 multiplayer preview video that takes a look at all the new (and old) matchmaking game modes, a preview of some of the new maps, gameplay from the Horde mode and an interesting fountain of razor hail. Painful razor hail. Watch the vid, it's Gears, fall in love.

Though, we don't exactly know when, because Microsoft has yet to officially announce it or its release, but according to the Xbox.com page, next Monday, October 20th will be the time to cruise the streets of San Andreas.

Another look at Far Cry 2's amazing map editor

Want to build a pyramid from scratch and duke it out with your friends while making your way across the desert? Think building a few serpent rock sculptures would add a nice touch to your multiplayer deathmatch? Well, those examples and anything your creative mind can conjure are all possible using the Far Cry 2 map editor. Yes, the same map editor that made us "oo" and "ah" this past August. Watch Ubisoft's latest map editor trailer and witness its unmatched awesomeness.

Rumor: Next Xbox to improve 360 games

Here's an interesting Xbox 720 (you know, the next Xbox console) rumor. According to Xbox Evolved and their "sources", Microsoft is planning on implementing "forward compatibility" into their next console creation. Saying that the next Xbox will improve upon current 360 titles, increasing frame rate, draw distance, graphics, textures, etc. Interesting rumor, but we can't help point out that Xbox Evolved's use of the term "forward compatibility" doesn't really make sense.

If the Xbox 720 were to play Xbox 360 games and improve the the overall experience, that's simply called backwards compatibility. Just like the Xbox 360 plays (some) original Xbox games. So, we're not entirely sure what Xbox Evolved's rumor news is really about, because we sort of expected the Xbox 720 to play and improve the overall experience of 360 games. That is unless they're talking about future Xbox 360 games adding code to make them forward compatible with the 720. Actual code on the disc that the 720 will use to improve the features, look and experience. That's what we'd call a forward compatible Xbox 360 game.

DICE planning Mirror's Edge as a trilogy

Talking with AusGamers, Mirror's Edge senior producer Owen O'Brien acknowledged EA and DICE's plans to continue the Mirror's Edge franchise and shows interest in developing a level editor for future sequels.

"The story we're telling at the moment is kind of a trilogy, a three-story arc," said O'Brien, "there's a lot of scope to take the story in different directions, or maybe tell someone else's story." Though, O'Brien makes it very clear that Mirror's Edge, this first installment, will solely focus on Faith and her "experiences in the world." Good times.

All said, we don't know if talking trilogy is worthy of excitement or praise, not just yet. We have a demo to try out next month and the game's retail release to play through. Then, if all goes well, we say bring on more messenger bag running sequels.

Gears of War 2 Flashback map comparison pics

With Microsoft's official confirmation that Gears of War multiplayer maps Gridlock, Canals, Mansion, Subway, and Tyro Station would be remade for Gears 2, comes new comparison shots. The comparison photos (galleried below) show what each map looked like in the original Gears and the prettified version that'll be a part of the free Flashback Map Pack DLC for Gears 2. Let us be the first to say an icy Canals makes a chilled tear run down our cheek. It's lovely.

So, take a gander at the Gears vs. Gears 2 map comparison photos as well as the newly released multiplayer screens. Long live Tyro Station.

Mercenaries 2 'Total Payback' update is M.I.A.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames fanboys who were excited to get their hands on the new Total Payback title update will, sadly, be dissapointed. Pandemic Studios has yet to release the new update, which was supposed to release on October 13th. The Mercenaries 2 forums are abuzz with angry gamers, so much so that forum moderators have been deleting threads that make mention of the Total Paypack update being delayed. We aren't sure what Pandemic's reason is for the delay or when it'll finally be released, but we've contacted them for comment and will update when we hear back.

[Thanks, Chris]
