As if we haven't already been smacked in the face
with enough proof that there's going to be an Xbox 360 price cut coming this September, we just came across even more retailer proof that on September 7th, $199 Xbox 360 Arcades will be the norm. Xbox-Scene posted the picture proof you see above that comes from another retailer's inventory database and what more can be said? $199 Arcade consoles equals very good times!
Now, we're nearly certain some sort of Xbox 360 pricing shake up will be happening in September, but we're beginning to wonder what role the Pro and Elite consoles have in it. All the retailer leaks have been surrounding a $199 Arcade console as we have yet to see any Pro or Elite price drop proof. It's all interesting price cut stuff that gets all the more interesting as the days go by.

Again, a great move for MS. Better games, new interface, and HD options for less than the Wii? You can't miss. MS will clean-up this holiday because of the pending Wii shortage.
As for the PS3, ponder this.....$199 vs. $399, which one will you choose? 'Nuff Said. Granted the Blu-Ray capabilities and momentum of Sony's black monster is very appealing, I return to....$199 vs. $399.

but then you have to ask yourself: What do I get for my $199.99? No HDD. No XBL membership. So $199.99 + $99.99 (20GB) + $49.99 = $349.99 (current price of the 60GB)
You really should be comparing it to the Wii my friend.

If you compare the Arcade to the Wii, the Wii has no HDD, but comes with 512MB for game saves, the Arcade comes with 256MB. The Arcade is natively in HD while the Wii is in SD. Both come with a wireless controller. Both come with online functionality, but Wii is nonexistent in online multiplayer offering (but it's free), Arcade's is the best (but you have to pay). Both come with game(s) bundled in. Arcade offers achievements, Wii doesn't. Wii has for family/party-oriented games, the Arcade has a handful. I don't think I missed anything else.
It's gonna be a tough battle for MS in this arena I think.

@ Devin - you missed out: the Wii has Wi-Fi built in.

Gamertag, thanks for the correction.
While we're at it, the Arcade comes with a wired ethernet connection.

Yeah the best thing MS could do right now on the eve of the fall software free-for-all is to lower the prices on all the SKUs to get people buying 360s again...

I still wish the hard drives were cheaper. The 60gb at $100, whenever that drops, isn't so bad since it's supposed to come with a few months of Live and maybe 1 or 2 other things, but even at $150, the 120gb is still steep if it doesn't come with anything else.

I hope it isn't the case but could they be doing away with the arcade SKU all together and just dropping the price to get them off the shelf like the 20 gigs?

Why would MS be releasing the 60g Xbox Live kit for $100 then? Let's say they keep the current pricing of $399 for the pro and $449 for the elite (which is a bad move). If one were to buy a $199 Arcade and a $100 Live kit, that's a better deal than the discounted $299 20g clearance. However, that's a bit confusing to a new consumer if they don't know what to look for so I'm sure they'll discount the other SKU's to compete with the PS3.

IF Microsoft (notice the big if) wanted to make hard-drive installs mandatory (make it poss., not def for all, but if circumstances warranted) or just wanted to start making it so every console had hard-drives, they could in fact phase out the Arcade at 199, and then sell the Arcade conversion kit or whatever they decide to call it for 100 with a 60gb drive and some other stuff including service... I hadnt thought about it that way till I came here, but that would make sense. I personally hope it is simply an Arcade unit price drop to 199, because yes, I think that could be one hell of a value really... No, it doesnt have WiFi to those above, however, for what 29.99 at Frys you can buy the orig. XBOX Wifi Ethernet Bridge that works fine at 802.11g speeds with the 360. Even configurable from the 360 same as the MS 360 USB WiFi adaptor.

I just want to know if the stand alone 120 HDD will see a cut and if the 60gb model will be an available upgrade as my 20gb hdd has been filled for quite some time and I have a hard time shelling out 170 for a drive that costs 70 to produce.

This will put Microsoft in a fantastic position for the holiday season. and the fact that they're doing this so early will give consumers plenty of time to find out about the great deals. good move MS!

That looks like an HP3000 terminal emulator screen.
Cutting down to half the PS3 and less than the Wii? I don't so how they couldn't do that, especially if it doesn't even have the hard drive.

Hey X3f, maybe you guys should do some sort of chart and price comparison with the current and the rumored, my buddy is considering getting it and was gonna get it now but now he might wait to see whats up. And what the difference in all the skus is as far as hardware and what comes in the box, it might be worth it. Thanks.

Just an FYI, that HST stands for Harmonized Sales Tax. HST is used in Canada so this is a Canadian confirmation if anything. Not that with the Loonie at parity with the USD this changes anything.
