After a recent earnings call, Activision outlined plans to release a new entry into the Call of Duty series by the end of its 2009 fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2009. "We'll launch on all four platforms we've participated on in fiscal [year] 2008," Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith said, refering to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's debut on the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Nintendo DS; a PS2 and Wii version are also in the works.
Griffith also revealed that Call of Duty 5 will see the franchise move into a new "military theater." Long-standing suspicion has been that Call of Duty 3 developer Treyarch would return the franchise to its World War II roots but Griffith's comments seem to debunk that setting rumor. Griffith did not mention whether Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward or rumored Treyarch would take the reins as the Call of Duty 5 developer.
On the subject of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Griffith revealed the James Bond licensed title that is currently in development by Treyarch will be powered by the CoD4 engine and release around the time of the latest Bond film, Quantum of Solace, this fall.
The only question to answer now is which war could Call of Duty 5 be based on. The answer? Civil. Muskets = Win.

For me personally, the more modern the better.
What can I say I'm a sucker for laser guns and hi-tech gadgets!
I'll remain optimistic on the James Bond title, you know how most movie tie-ins are.....

Using the same engine as CoD4 for the new Bond game? Excellent. Now if only they could reassemble Rare and have them work on it.

Regardless of when/where it takes place, one thing is for sure: Call of Duty 5 will not be as good as Call of Duty 4. You can take that to the bank.

I hope that Treyarch does a much better job than COD3. It was still a great game, but Infinity Ward's COD2 and COD4 were better. I trust there will be a lot of pressure to deliver an excellent product now that COD4 has raised the bar to a whole-nodda-leva!

If they go with a "futuristic" battlefield with lasers and robots I will absolutely not buy it.
I may even just rent it, anyway. I seem to be getting burned out on Call of Duty games.

I have a few fantasies for Infinity Ward and the COD 4 engine to pair up on again..let me indulge:
A GOOD Predator/Aliens game. Just imagine playing as Dutch, fighting off the cloaked Predator in a heavily forested, COD4-real jungle...(yeah, forest, jungle..whatever.) Multiplayer could be Predator (Yautja) clans fighting or training, or perhaps an Alien/Predator type.
Another idea...a COD4-engine run post-apocalyptic game. Still within the confines of 'real' armies and gunbattles, the world could be in total disarray and the fight could be for territory, water, other supplies. Multiplayer maps could be biohazard-infected areas, abandoned suburbs, chemical plants, desolate, overgrown downtown areas (I Am Legend), things like that.
Hell, maybe zombies could make an appearance!
Just some ideas...
