Thinking about it, at 800 MS points a pop, the Variety Map Pack alone generated $10 million in sales in a little over a week. And that was just for four multiplayer maps! Crazy stuff. Congrats to Infinity Ward on a job well done and congrats to CoD4 players for keeping the community high atop the Xbox Live charts for so long. Also, with these sales, you can almost guarantee another CoD4 map pack will see a release in the not too distant future.

I bought it, but I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed. There should have been 4 full maps (I still haven't played the small map). Also, a couple new weapons would have been cool.
Hopefully next time they will pack a bit more in.

Yeah, the only way I was able to get into that small map was team tactical... which I don't like.

I remember COD 2 and 3 both had a special FREE bonus map. The other maps never became free.
Gears had it too.
Can we have a free map?
Even if it's Killhouse II.

10 million in 9 days, that's almost $1,111,111 per day, $46,296.29 per hour, $771.6 per minute, $12.86 per second.
There were selling 1.25 maps per second for nine days straight. Damn fine work, boys.

Yay!! Because of the success now we can all expect to see this practice continue forever. Don't expect to see any free maps or add-on maps to the base product. If you can sell 10 maps on product release and sell millions of dollars worth of product why not hold 3 or 4 additional maps back until 2-3 months after release? As a game developer, now you can hold back part of your product and just charge more for it later.
The bottom line in that if I were a game developer and had 20 maps, of which 3 or 4 I felt I could hold back, why not? As wildly successful as this is there's no reason to put too much into your game. However, I 100% sure you won't see games reduced in price from $60 to $50 with "more features and maps coming later."

Let's be grateful you're not a game developer then, eh?
It's more likely that we will see certain game assets such as maps take up less time in the initial development cycle. This means that the employees who usually would have had to devote time to creating them would be free to work on other areas of the core game, resulting in either a faster release date or a higher quality game, maybe a bit of both.
DLC doesn't sell if noone buys the game.
