Today, as we churned through February's NPD numbers, we came across an interesting number that was included as part of Microsoft's NPD press release. The magic number is 750,000 and it's the number of times the
seven free XNA games were downloaded the week after
GDC. Microsoft's internal estimates peg the seven XNA games (including gems like
Dishwasher: Dead Samurai,
JellyCar and
Little Gamers) were downloaded around 750,000 times over Xbox Live and, by our internal calculations, that sounds like a lot! Hopefully the exposure these downloads received not only got gamers excited for their release, but excited for the big
XNA community games rollout later this Fall. Bring on the free XNA goodness already, bring it!

That JellyCar was a good time. Even though I found myself playing Proximity HD CONSTANTLY. So simple, yet a real good and fast game to play when just killing a few minutes before dinner.

I think that's more impressive than it initially sounds given some of the things you have to do to even access the games... I have to imagine anyone not paying attention to sites at the time would be unlikely to even know about the stuff.

My guess is that it's the number of times each game was downloaded, combined.
So, out of all 7 games, if the average download was say, 3, we're talking about only about 250,000 unique users.
Which is still a decent number of people, don't get me wrong.. after all, 250,000 * $5 is 1.2 million per game, and these authors did it as a hobby.

How about releasing those games? You know... the full version, and making some money? Hmmm?
Dishwasher, Jelly Car, and Little Gamers are purchases I'll gladly make.

Oh and @ emirabal:
You had to download a XNA Launcher out of extra downloads, or all downloads... and then go to the games blade where a special XNA seciton now was, and *then* download the games individually. Sadly I think its all expired now... *sniff* that Dishwasher was seriously a ton of fun. I didn't get a chance to try the others.
