I wish I'd never bought one of these things, and that was well over a year ago... Not sure why any sane person would buy one now, even for $50. RIP HD-DVD.

Probably because they don't explode in a month. So for $50 you can buy HD-DVDs on clearance (what will those be? $5?) and then enjoy some HD movies for a 3+ years until the drive dies and then throw everything out. Even with knowing you're going to throw it out, if you calculate the money spent for the hours of enjoyment I'm sure it'll be cheaper than doing a lot of other things. (including going to a movie theater)

If it drops down to $25 Ill pick one up just so I can buy the import version of terminator 2 hd-dvd, the best quality release of my favorite movie to date. Total cost woul be $50 for the player and movie and its something I would pay just for that one.
Then again, they may eventually do a proper blu-ray release in the future so who knows?

I'd probably still pick up the drive if some clever soul cracked it to be used as an external drive on a pc, but even then that'll still be pretty pointless :-/
Ah well, bring on the blu...

I'm still happy with my HD-DVD player purchase. I enjoyed watching HD movies on it via Netflix and the few titles I bought. Now I use it for all my DVDs and HD-DVDs so I don't have to take my games out of my 360 when I just want to watch a movie. It's almost worth getting one just to have the convenience of a second DVD drive for less disk swapping IMHO. Now I'm just waiting for the Blu-Ray version.

If you know HD-DVD is going to die, why bother. If I needed enjoyment, I'd rather put it toward games or regular DVDs. No thanks. This would have to be $19.99 and come with some movies before I'd even remotely consider it.

It DOES come with movies. King-Kong is packed in, and you get a coupon for ordering 5 more movies of your choice.

I was hoping we'd be getting them free with every 12 month Gold membership renewal. Oh well!
Is this US only then? Any news on a UK price drop??

If it still includes the free movies offer that would pretty much pay for itself.

They make a great upconvert player.I had one and when i put regular dvd in compared to my 360's supposed upconvert thru hdmi the hdvd player did it amazing. Also theres still alot of movies out there on hddvd and they will drop to like 5 bucks easy. You could buy alot of the movies on bluray for hddvd cheaper and just 50 for the player. That alone makes it worth it not to mention get a cheap hddvd burner and burn movies lol.

Does the Base 360 Upscale DVD's or does it require the HD-DVD to do that?
If it requires it, then that would make this almost worth it to me when I get my HD TV. If the DVD in the 360 does it then, no.
