Portal 2: is it actually a good idea?

MTV's Multiplayer poses an interesting question: does Portal need a sequel? Hailed by many as one of the best games of 2007, and hailed by some as the best game of 2007, Portal represented a truly unique and engaging experience rarely seen in the video game industry. As Multiplayer puts it, the game was satisfying; it didn't leave you wanting more. Of course, we all know that one-off gaming creations are less than common in video games, as the ultimate goal of publishers and developers is to create a game that can be turned into a successful franchise. The question is not whether or not Portal will receive a sequel, but if it should.

Our answer: yes. Because GLaDOS is still alive, and she's got to go. But what do you think? That's what we want to know. As such, we've drummed up a poll asking that very questions. Submit your answer below and tell us why you picked it in the comments.

I thoroughly enjoyed Portal, and Portal 2 would be DEFINITE purchase unless they fundamentally changed the gameplay mechanics.

I think a prequel would work really well. Finding the 'hidden' areas in Portal with the graffiti and pictures on the wall really intrigued me. I wanted to know how they got the, who put them there, and how long were they living behind the test chambers?

We'd get to see the story of Chell's predecessor and how he/she found out 'The cake is a lie'. Not to mention bringing back the companion cube! (For more than one level this time.)

I have to stop writing now cos I'm getting excited.

Seeing as how Episode 3 will at least be in part taking place on the Aperture Science ship the Borealis where you must go to retrieve some "new" and "powerful" technology before the combine do I think it's pretty safe to say that within the confines of a ship there will be some portal popping. Just don't hit the hull with it!

I voted Yes but I have a strong feeling that Portal and HL are going to merge in HL2E3. If you finished Episode 2, you would realize that an intertwining is inevitable.

It is probably just me being paranoid, but the link from the left 4 dead article goes to a pieces written by Valve PR and singles out Portal as being an ip that was "introduced as part of the orange box". Key word being introduced.

Anyway, speculation aside - I need more Portal.

For sure. Portal is more an explanation for new points on Half-Life 2 History playable than a Game itself.

On HL2:EP2, you can see the some installations of Aperture Labs, and the history said that Aperture was a competitor of Black Mesa on the creation of the Portal Technology.

Probably, on HL3 or HL2:EP3 you could use the
Portal gun like the gravity gun or any other.

What Valve could do, is upgrade the game with new levels (and the PERFECT GLaDOS comments) time after time.

Sorry for any English mistakes, but I'm a Portuguese speaker :D

Portal as a game could be said to have cult-status and as such, like many movies with the same following, could well be ruined by a sequel, in particular a unsympathetic or over-explaining one, especially if it aims to give the gamer closure.
Ask yourselves this...would a sequel to a movie like Donnie Darko, be a good idea?? Or would it over explain the plot and ruin the intrigue of the story and fun of speculation??
The other option is to make a sequel 'a-la' Silent Hill in which very little of the plot is actually explained in subsequent sequels, still encouraging the gamer to use their imagination as to what is really happening. You may notice however, that when they made the Silent Hill movie, they tried too hard to explain and ended up spoiling the plot somewhat.
Ultimately it comes down to GLaDOS as a character...
Should it be finished? Or should the character be left to continue doing "science", in it's own malevolent, unsupervised, misguided and slightly insane way that we all love?? Do we really need another load of tests again, which will seem all too similar to ones we have already done, or would it be better to have another different and original facet of the "lambda-verse"?? Could this perhaps, be arriving with the forthcoming "Black-Mesa"? Who knows, but I hope Valve continue to add flesh to the "lambda-verse" with the new and exciting gameplay that Portal demonstrated was possible.

Sorry...just an additional comment having read some of the previous ones in more detail!

Perhaps if Aperture Labs are featured in Ep.3, then maybe Gordon or Alex will witness the labs little explosion and come across the dead or dying lying amongst the debris clutching the "Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device", which you can then take and will need to use, especially if the games path takes you through Aperture Labs??

Just a thought!
