Since the early days of Xbox Live Arcade, gamers everywhere have been dreaming of the games they'd love to see on the service. While some wishes have come to pass, other remain rumors. This one comes to us from Xbox Evolved and it concerns none other than the Nintendo 64 darling from Rare, GoldenEye. Heralded by many as one of the best FPS games to grace a console -- and certainly one of the first games to prove an FPS could be done well on a console -- GoldenEye could be on its merry way to Xbox Live Arcade sometime soon. Apparently a deal has been reached between Rare, Activision, who owns the game rights to James Bond, and MGM Studios, who owns the film rights to James Bond. Supposedly the game should release shortly before the upcoming Activision published James Bond title rumored to be under development at Bizarre.
But wait, there's more! Xbox Evolved is also reporting that Rare is planning on releasing more of its back catalog on XBLA including the original Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie. And before you ask, no, Killer Instinct isn't mentioned.

Doesn't Nintendo own the rights to the game?

i believe Rare and Activision hold different licenses over it. Rare, who MS owns, because they developed it in the first place. And Activision because they have exclusive rights to any new Bond releases.

It would explain why Nintendo haven't released it on Wii Virtual Console. With it being one of the few N64 FPS games that would sell very well, wouldn't you expect Nintendo to rush to release it.

it will never release on virtual console because Rare owns the game. There are 2 people who own this game, Rare and Activision (because they currently hold the license). Only those 2 working together can decide where this game is released. And forunetly for us, RARE is owned by microsoft, so the only place it could be released is for xbox.

lol the race for oddjob when choosing characters. and to a lesser extend, the 2nd last character because she was slightly shorter too.

Man, that would be a real stick in the eye of the Virtual Console -- an N64 game on a MS console. Good thing I own both of them ;-)

It would be cool if they would update the controls so you could use duel analog sticks. I wouldn't want to move around with one stick and look up and down with the d-pad or abxy buttons.

Nintendo supposedly gave up a lot of these rights when Rare was acquired. And if that's true all they really retained were items related to established Nintendo properties, meaning we're not going to see Diddy Kong or Krystal any time soon. Unfortunately, Nintendo, Rare and MS have not been very forthcoming with who exactly owns what and in what senses to my knowledge.

The Wii's doesn't have enough processing power to handle a game like GoldenEye. Heh heh. Only joking.

This is great. I have fond memories of this game. Shoot I still own the damn thing but my 64 acts up so I don't play it anymore. Would be nice as a VC on Wii. But if this is XBLA hell yes I will get this.
