Warner drops HD DVD, goes Blu-Ray only

The question we find ourselves asking is "what does Michael Bay think?" Warner Bros. Entertainment today announced that the company will discontinue releasing its movies on HD DVD beginning in May of this year in favor of Blu-Ray exclusivity. The decision comes as Warner Bros. CEO Bary Meyer airs concerns that "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger." In other words, if one format doesn't win out soon, a newer format could dominate them both. Digital downloads, perhaps? Maybe Michael Bay was right after all. Whatever your position in the format war (we're happy with our DVDs, thanks), this represents a big blow to HD DVD, and rumor has it that Warner Bros. received a hefty chunk of change in exchange for Blu-Ray exclusivity.

So, starting this summer, your 360 HD DVD player might be feeling a bit lonely (except for the fine films from Paramount and Dreamworks, of course). We're guessing you'll still be able to pick up Warner Bros. movies off of Video Marketplace though.

Fuck!! I just bought myself the 360 HDDVD player when the amazon offer came along and also some additional HDDVDs. For the all naysayers of HD content in general you have to see Planet Earth in HD, on my completely average Vizio HDTV that thing has got to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen, beats practically any game I have ever played on the 360.

This is very unfortunate. HD-DVD is a more consumer-friendly format. You can tell by looking at the specs that Blu-ray was designed by a company trying to protect its media assets.

I used to side with the Blu-ray camp because of its higher capacity, but I've switched sides after doing more research into the formats.

Whoever thought HD-DVD had a chance was kidding themselves...

With 5 of the worlds biggest studios Exclusive to Blu-ray... well.. make that 6 now, U'd have to be stupid to think otherwise..

owell, good news for us Blu-ray owners, the superior format has pretty much won... so im looking forward to getting my hands on the blu-ray copy of Transformers in about six months.

Newline just went Blu-ray exclusive aswell...

Owell, no LOTR Trilogy for HD-DVD least they have the Matrix, batman...oh wait, no.. they dont, they will be out on blu-ray too ...

Oh and, M$ should cancel their HD-DVD xbox, there wont be any movies for it... too bad!...

I love my premium xbox 360, but Sony owned them in this respect.

I say good riddance to HD DVD. The format is inferior to Blu-ray. The only reason people can't see a difference is because studios are lazy and use the same encode for both formats when they can obviosly make a higher bitrate encode for Blu-ray since it has an extra 20gb. I had the 360 add on drive but sold it last year for $100 because the movies were pricier than Blu-ray ( I'm looking at you combo discs ), Blu has more vendor support, and more people I deal with as a HT installer buy Blu-ray. I know some people will say downloads are the future but you can't compress a 40 to 50gb file down to 6gb and expect to have the same video and audio quality.

because people just like to see chaos, tragedies, traffic accidents and then poke fun despite their understanding of it all.

hd-dvd is heading down that hall, shackled and broken and the mob keeps slinging it's tomatoes.

i predicted the downfall would happen. remember anything in console history with an add-on and you'll understand that the idea will never succeed. besides, blu-ray has a much better ring to it.

I work at a video store chain called Hastings, that's dominantly just in the midwest. We've been renting BR disks for quite some time now, and just started renting HD about 2 weeks ago. It's horrible to even try to compare our HD selection to our BR. Now as far as sales, the selection is roughly the same but BR sells far better.

I've got a guy that writes for who comes in roughly once a week picking up a bunch of movies, usually taking advantage of our deals on used product. He came in while I was at work yesterday and mentioned this news to me, and as we discussed it for a while, he mentioned that he's selling his entire HD collection on ebay and waiting for them to come out in BR. While it may be a little drastic, the guy's not stupid, he deals with the 2 formats for a living, and if he wants anything out of the HD disks he has, he needs to sell them now.

Anyway, I was personally rooting for HD a while back, then I lost interest as I haven't picked up either format yet, simply waiting for one to be decided. I don't care which one wins really as long as it happens soon (within the next year) because I'm tired of the hassle.

There are several rumors around the net right now. The first is that Warner was paid off 1.8 billion dollars for this switch.

The 2nd rumor was that they were paid 500 million.

Third rumor was that they would only pick exclusive sides of whichever format Fox movie studios would choose. For several months, they could have been in negotiations with Fox, trying to get them to convert to HD-DVD.

Regardless, HD-DVD is the superior format in Europe, and they are region-free. Even if you can't get HD-DVDs in North America in a year or two, there could literally be thousands released in Europe that are easily imported.

Being a region free format is great as I hate region protection but studios care more about money. If they have more control over their movies then of course they will pick that option. In the end, it is always up to the content provider if they want to make the movie region free. In time, there will hopefully be some region hacks for those who want them.

HD DVD superior to Blu-Ray in Europe? Are you smoking some of the good stuff? Blu-Ray out sold HD DVD 3:1 in 2007... sure looks like HD DVD leads now doesn't it.

It's about money.. region-locking = control for the studios and raw sale numbers = money. Both are on Blu-Ray's side.

if you think about it this is actually MS fault if they had just included a built in HD-DVD player in to the 360 then things might have turned out different. but no they had to be better by making there console cheaper just to beat the ps3 but now look whats happened. this is why sony, blu ray and the ps3 are the best.

So because Sony back Blu-ray and the 360 proved that DVD was still perfectly viable for gaming, Sony and the PS3 own?

Well lets weigh the investments here: X amount of dollars to secure content for GTA 4 vs X amount of dollars to secure 6 major movie studios, and AGAIN (PS2/DVD) introduce the next generation in movies AND gaming in one machine (PS3/Blu-ray). The big picture here is longevity of the MACHINE. You don't build 6 (or how ever many) half-assed SKUs when even the "Elite" one doesn't offer you the same bang for your buck at the price point. I remember in the beginning of the PS3 how people were saying it was just too expensive, and how Blu-ray shouldn't be "forced" on people driving up the price of the PS3, but the HD-DVD player was ungodly expensive (and still is, considering). MS should have just built in the HD-DVD player rather than trying to nickel and dime their customers to death with add-ons (me included) under the guise of "giving you a choice". Case and point, an "Elite" STILL doesn't give the as capable of a machine as the PS3 60...hell, 40GB when you factor in HD movie support. Bottom line, if MS would have integrated the player and "forced" the format on the customer, this shit wouldn't be happening. So once again people will be getting screwed. They can't even say they didn't see this coming. Hell it was probably part of the game plan years ago. Stranger shit has happened...

This is absolutely ridiculous, I just got the 360 HD-DVD player for christmas and it's already worthless. So much for the HD-DVD player being built into the ultimate 360 too. Thanks Warner Brothers!
