Holy cheap, cheap, cheap Xbox 360 HD DVD player Major Nelson! Late in the day yesterday, eagle-eyed consumers spotted the HD DVD player online for $129, which is $50 cheaper than the $179 MSRP. The $129 price tag was seen at
Amazon.com, but the price has since jumped back to its $179 levels. Lame. Though, there is still some good news.
Toys R Us is filling in where Amazon.com left off by offering the Xbox 360 HD DVD player for $129 and it's available (in-store) right now! And you get five
free movies too! You should jump on this holiday deal ASAP before it goes away ... wait a moment. Is this really a holiday deal or is it simply a foreshadowing of an impending Microsoft okayed HD DVD player price drop that's coming down the pipes? Hmmm ...

I really want one of these for my 100' HD projector but I only rent movies from Blockbuster, it is no reason to buy any dvd any more with their online service. They don't support HD-DVD only BlueRay so until HD-DVD is the sole winner I wont be picking this up. But I do love my 360 and will not buy a PS3

@ pkilla Blockbuster does offer HD DVD's online. You have to click on "Collections" and then scroll down to HD DVD. That's how I get my HD DVD fix.

The other system is $399 with a blu-ray player. The 360 should be $399 including the hd-dvd player. Come on microsoft, you can win. Just make Live Free and make the price on par with the other system.

Well, as far as live goes... you get what you pay for!
I already bought the player and a ton of HD DVD's, but that price looks awesome! That's hard to pass up for someone who hasn't jumped on board yet.
They are almost meeting that price point, they COULD bundle the arcade and the hd dvd player for a little over $400. If they ever integrate the HD player and the xbox I'm on board.

Oh man, transformers for $129 would be so worth it.
@2 - I think the PSN will be charging membership costs eventually, when they have enough of a user base. They need to for server costs. It just makes business sense.

It depends on your tv! If you are running off a 19" CRT from 1989 then I would suggest you don't buy this add-on. I have a 57" 1080p hi def tv, and I think it looks amazing. So I would have to say it depends on what you are working with.
If you do have the setup to handle hi def, then I would recommend it. I really love the way the hd movies look and I can definitely see and HEAR the difference.

If this drop hits Europe/UK I'll be all over it in the new year, i wont be the hugest of HD-DVD collectors but if its anywhere near the £70-80 (GBP) mark then you cant say no to a HD drive at that price...
Now then, get the 120gb HDD down to a decent price as well and 360 owners will be laughing...

@Larry "and HEAR the difference."
The sound will be basically the same as DVD because the HD DVD add on only support lossy audio. Sucks, I know, I had to get myself a Toshiba to support uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD.

I sent in my form in mid-August. I got a card from them a couple of weeks ago saying there was a delay; I think they were planning to ship in late December or something like that.
