Another video, this one taken from GayGamer.net, is posted after the break. One of the sites readers created the Gamertag "Gay Boy," took it into Halo 3 online, and recorded the results. As you might expect, the results are far from safe for work (or safe for civilized ears really). Just remember: mute button. It's your best friend, and the other guy will happily continue talking to no one. That's what the internet is for.

And this is why they always have that supplemental message saying "Game experience may change during online play."

You have to admit that's an incredibly vague statement on their part, though lol.

Tony,
What's so vague about it? It's absolutely true & MS has no control over what some wet behind the ears kid may spout off.

This is one of the reasons that I don’t care to play on Live very much. I have never had anyone curse at me, but I don’t like listening to people talking like that to others. The mute button is fine and all, but why should I have to go to the extra trouble of having to mute idiots? Language is a part of the Live TOS, it is not a free speech issue. I pay for the service and because of that Microsoft should hold some responsibility to what is going on with it. Major Nelson says that they act on these reports? What a bunch of BS. Let’s see them act on something, ban the gamertags from the second video. Do you know why they won’t? Because there are to many customers that engage in this inappropriate behavior. I figure once Microsoft gets indicted with contributing to a hate crime it will change though. Yeah, using some of the language on the video is considered a hate crime, and some states like Illinois have looked, and are looking into charges since the Live is culpable by reason that they charge for the service and employ a TOS.

X3F and readers, all this is is another example of the 'Mob mentality'. When you're faceless, you feel like you can say or do anything. We've all heard pre-pubescent kids yelling the most ignorant and uncreative words as we play Halo, and they do so because they're kids! Spending all day at a repressed school environment (and I'm a sub; I know how repressed and PC schools have to be now. Some teachers think Spongebob is 'edgy'), so these kids unleash their angst and frustration in a relatively harmless way after school...to them.
For most of it and for most of us, hearing that BS is just annoying beyond annoying, but yeah..I wouldn't want a LITTLE kid hearing it. Then again, Halo 3 IS an 'M' rated game, so if your preteen is playing Halo 3 and begins to call mommy a whore or something, then it's the fault of the parents for exposing them to that experience.
Don't blame Smith & Wesson for the violence in the world, and don't blame Microsoft and Xbox Live for hate-speech from little kids. Blame the parents for not caring, then passing the buck.
It makes me angry to see the moms and dads interviewed not knowing anything about the parental controls..not because MS didn't plaster the damn console with labels saying 'PARENTAL CONTROLS INSIDE' or something dumb, no..i'm pissed because the parents just plunked their 9 year old in front of the world, with an 'M' rated game, THEN got angry that the world bit back at little Timmy. Might as well blame the lion for eating your son you put in his zoo pit, lady!

Well spoken, Magic Whiskey, well spoken. Exactly my feelings. I get so tired of our society always looking to place the blame somewhere else. Usually, it's the business or guy with "deep pockets". Where has the personal responsibility gone today?

Well said,
This is why there is no voice chat in any E rated games.
Anyone surprised?
This sort of sensationalist crap reports constantly pop up and take all the blame off of parenting.
These sorts of things are the reason why Americans are so goddamn sue happy and why Jack Thompson still has a job.
Parents will sue any corporation in a heartbeat if little billy is traumatized, but they won't take a second look at the games and other inappropriate garbage they buy their kids.

I've played video games since Atari and Xbox 360 is the first time I've played online with voice chat. In a solid 20 years worth of gaming, I only experienced this stuff starting this year, just a few months ago to be exact. It's old to you, but to even people like me who for whatever reason (I owned a Mac and Dreamcast while online gaming started taking off) are brand new to this world, it's good to have a heads up from the news. I bet most parents didn't know there was open voice chat. I didn't know how it worked until my first session of Halo 3. I figured it was just for super nerds who wanted to order me to "flank" something. I didn't know to expect a constant stream of verbal abuse. They don't show that on the back of the box. And the muting thing is tricky. There isn't actually a "Mute Button". There is a Mute Option in a menu. Big difference.

I'm an older gamer as well, and have played vid games from the Atari Pong forward. However, I would hardly classify the "mute" option as being "tricky". Far. From. It.

Agreed.... I'll only play ranked team slayer with my friends instead of social matches just to avoid all the damn "squeakers" and punk kids. I can't believe parents have no idea what goes on in a Live game. Sad.

Sticks and stones guys. My kids will know that words are pointless, and to take experiences in context.
Someone saying they want to inflict bodily harm, sexually abuse or otherwise insult my kids in the street is vastly differet than over the internets. I'm sorry that your kids are a bunch of no-hack wimps.
My kids are champions, either I'm raising spartan warriors or western parenting has really jumped off a cliff (after getting made fun of on myspace, lol).

These kids are far from little. I find it hard to believe that anyone here over 17 now didn't find a way to play M rated games before they turned 17.
None of these people got super angry over it. They just were surprised and wondered what they could do. I'm almost wondering how many people watched the video lol.

I curse and use slurs constantly in my day to day life but I never say anything profane or mildly upsetting over Live. I know my friends and family and coworkers and we all know what is acceptable between us but when I'm playing over Live I have no idea who is on the other side, what their background is or what they feel is acceptable or "funny." I would rather not unnecessarily upset a complete stranger just because of some idiotic selfish urge to blurt out obscenities.
Simple social propriety. What's so hard about that? You don't visit with your girlfriends parents for the first time and start shouting F this and F that and then pick a fight with her little brother do you? I wouldn't be surprised is some of these people did.
Damn kids and their video games.
Cut your hair and get a job!

I never play with the headset on, and I always mute the conversation. I don't have any desire to be sworn at by 16-year-olds while I'm trying to play Team Fortress 2.
Really, there's no need for the communications. If people aren't going to use it for tactical reasons and instead abuse it and make it a venue to trash talk and be anonymously despicable, I don't feel I need to follow the pack and use the communication features. That's why I'm so very unimpressed every time the XBox updates are hyped up to include new communications tools. I don't give a damn about communicating with people on my video game console.
Frankly, I hate the whole idea of wearing a headset and talking to people I don't know while gaming. If I want conversation, I'll invite friends over.

That "gay" halo 3 video was pretty ignorant. Over half of the voice clips they played were of other gamers just basically stating the persons gamertag. "Hey gayboy!" How is that offensive? Granted about half of the other voice clips were of people verbally attacking "GAYBOY". Everyone knows that conversations over xbox live aren't the most sophisticated ones. And then they make a name that would encourage people to act that way. People use homosexual slurs all the time when playing online. It's not that big of a deal. If something like this offends you maybe you should spend your life living in a bubble. Because really, xbox live insults are probably not the worst thing that openly gay people have to endure during their lifetime.
Really dumb video if you ask me.
And about the "bad language" video......xbox live implements features to protect younger kids from being exposed to things like that. It's not their fault if the kids parents aren't involved enough to know how to prevent it.
Just my 2 cents!

Although alot of what you say is true, it is a big deal to constantly hear all kinds of slurs when playing on Live...whether it's racial, ethnic, or sexual. My gamertag wouldn't lead anyone to the conclusion that I was gay, but I won't use Live anymore unless its with friends or other people that I meet at 'gaymer' sites. I just got sick of listening to the way other players speak to eachother. There's to much other garbage going on in the world to deal with - playing games is my way to escape all of that and have fun.

Poor Mark Suppelsa, you are such a noob and a prototypical fear fucking media fear mongerer. Cover the story from both sides, not just the side that is the most dramatic.
I have to agree with most of the sentiments posted in the comments section already.
There is no magic bullet, there's no ban hammer, there's pretty much nothing that can be done to eliminate this kind of trash talking from online gaming communities. Both of the videos make it seem that every online game player talks like this but in reality it's really not like that. There are some good people out there who play for fun and are actually good sports.
Playing online is a mix of good and bad. Unfortunately, the bad seems to get more publicity because it makes for a good story and will attract eyeballs which is exactly what advertisers like MS et. al. are really after.
As far as the kids are concerned, whatever happened to good old involved parenting? Where parents actually cared about what their kids were saying and doing? Sure my parents aren't as involved in my life as they were before but I would like to think that they have molded me into a person who is able to take the good from the bad.

Fox isn't alone in bad mouthing the 360. Twice today, CNBC has dedicated not just one reporter to bad mouth the 360, but TWO! They are primarily reporting on the RROD issue, and the frivolous lawsuit some ambulance chaser filed considering Halo 3 and compatibility issues. Check out the link to watch the fine example of tabloid TV.
