Assassin's Creed is pulling in a mixed bag of scores since its launch this week, with reviews ranging from a crazy perfect 100 to a very disappointing 67 given out by Planet Xbox 360. According to metacritic,
Assassin's currently has 15 reviews posted with the average rating working out to be around 84 out of 100. It's an average rating that is pretty good, but far from 90+ games like
BioShock,
Halo 3,
Orange Box and
CoD4. So what's the problem? Well, the low reviews seem to focus on the game's negatives like a short campaign, repetitive sequences and odd design decisions all tainted with (what we feel to be) a bit of over expectation. It's a classic case of disappointments weighing greater on the review scale than the positives.
We haven't had a chance to play the retail build of the game quite yet, so we're interested in hearing what those of you who have played it think. Has
Assassin's Creed fulfilled your every hope and desire or has its minor imperfections ruined the experience? Tell us what's up. Until then, we'll just wait and see where the game's average moves after more reviews get tallied.

Eh, it's not a horrible game -- it's just that it was WAY over-hyped.

I don't honestly feel that games should be judged upon the hype that led up to them, but rather what's actually there.
I never expected it to be amazing, honestly. Hell, some of the stuff that's in 90 territory I'd not give that high of a score to whatsoever. I think there's kind of a problem when even an 85 average isn't good enough, though lol. It really twists around any concept that 5 should be "average".

beautiful game but very repetitive. the whole sneaky assassin thing is thrown out the window towards the end of the game and you just have sword fight with guard after guard. Ending is the biggest blue balling since Halo 2. Worth a rent and play for 3-5 hours. You'll experience the best parts. Purchase it and beat the whole game... you'll regret it.

Not horrible, no.. I have it as well and so far in the gameplay I'd say it's great after-midnight game..zone out, relax, and open your mind because this ISN'T a big action title, it's heavy on story which you'll have to muddle through, and it's a little out there. The main character has a North American dialect because well, he just does. It makes sense if you play the game a little.
For fans of B-movies (and Mystery Science Theater 3000), it's actually a lot like Roger Corman's movie 'The Undead'. Check it out. If you see this film, Altair's voice will make a LOT more sense. Spoilers beware (ish.)

Im enjoying the game. When people are saying the stuff is repetitive, you basically have 3 "missions" to complete before assassinating someone: interrogation, pickpocket or eavesdrop. Some of these missions take as little as 20 seconds to complete once you get to the targe. So while yes it does get repetitive to have to pick pocket a bunch of people its not like it takes hours to snatch a letter from a guy.
The action is decent, the stealth assassinations are probably the best part. Graphics are gorgeous though, when your up on the view points you get some good eye candy. Character animations are top notch, the climbing animation is the best Ive ever seen in a 3rd person game.

I'm enjoying it, little repetitive but with ME out next week it will be a nice one to play 40% of the time while 60% to ME. The anims are amazing and the movement fluid most of the time. Yet it lacks a little something more to it besides running about town and doing little things here and there that are all the same. And def. not as open world-like as they where touting at E3. Overall I would give it a 8.5 for effort, it is def. a step in a nice direction. Marry it with the SC series and you might have something ha

I don't get the "over-hyped" thing. Your supposed to rate the software, not the marketing department.

I wasn't planning on getting it, but I am now after blasting through CoD4 in 6 hours I thought this maybe a longer more challenging game. I am a bit dissapointed this is also short. I think the longest game I have played lately is Crackdown and perhaps Rainbow Six Vegas. It is getting a bit annoying, but atleast if a game is short you generally have a lot of fun and actually see the end.

Toro, you'll definately enjoy it during the rental period. I agree with what everyone is saying here about the beautiful climbing animations and stuff. but it really is disappointing cuz it's oozing style and potential and when you get to the last half of the game you're like 'this could've been SOOO much better'
funny glitch (which there are tons) that happen to me was a pick pocketing task I had. I watched my target as he talked to his guard buddy about whatever secret crap I'm suppose to find out about, my target says goodbye to the guard and begins to walk away. I go to pick pocket my target who catches me and calls the guards (including his buddy). Instead of running and hiding in hay (cuz we all know guards give up looking for criminals if they can't locate a murderer in 10 seconds) I kill the half a dozen guards that try to get me. After killing the guards which clears my "wanted" level, the pick pocket mission respawns including the target and the guard... who sees his own dead corpse and goes WHO DID THIS?! and attacks me... which results in me killing him again!... which results in him respawning to find two of his own corpses... well you can see the loop here. Lots of funny moments like this in the game.

COD4 takes less time to beat, but atleast it's levels have variety. Different environments, weapons, vehicles, types of missions, etc.
Play Assassin's Creed for an hour or two and you'll experience all it has to offer. To beat it, just take that hour of gameplay and repeat it 10 times.

All of those 90+ games you mention are FPS. This is not. In today's gaming landscape, the unfortunate truth is that people are just FPS hungry and they'll enjoy a FPS clone over a game that tries something different.

jjdoglegg, have you beaten the game yet? just curious because when I first started playing it I felt the same way and would've told people I personally score it a 9 but after I finished the game it dropped down to 7... and with no replay value, it's getting returned.
