The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the official winners of its Video Games Awards and the Xbox 360 has a few awards to stick on its mantle. While Wii Sports managed to take home a staggering six of the thirteen awards, it was BioShock that walked away with the coveted Game of the Year. Crackdown also managed to snag 2 awards, one for Best Action and Adventure and one for Best use of audio. We're willing to bet that this isn't he only game of the year award BioShock is likely to earn by year's end, but the award given to Crackdown was unexpected (though certainly not unwarranted). We're sure the folks at Real Time Worlds are mighty pleased. Check out the full list of awards after the break.
- Best Action and Adventure: Crackdown
- Best Strategy and Simulation: Wii Sports
- Best Sports: Wii Sports
- Best Multiplayer: Wii Sports
- Best Casual and Social: Wii Sports
- Best use of audio: Crackdown
- Best original score: Okami
- Best technical achievement: God of War II
- Best artistic achievement: Okami
- Best gameplay: Wii Sports
- Best innovation: Wii Sports
- Best story and character: God of War II

The awards are a complete joke. Wii Sports winning best stratergy and simulation eh? Judging by what won, they only actually played 6 games.

You really know how to push your luck Agent.
If people here haven't played Crackdown, they should definitely give it a go. Its mindless, but super fun.

Shouldn't these award shows happen after the Holiday rush, after all the Triple A games come out?

This is retarded. Wii Sports? I mean come on it's fun for the first five minutes but it's just a demo not a game and it is not fun to play for any prolonged period of time. It's not even that great of game, the only one that's anywhere close to the sport that it's trying imitate is wii tennis.
These people obviously don't play enough games.

I'm more inclined to believe the Wii Sports awards are more reasonable than Bioshock. I don't care what you guys say, any FPS where shooting is a chore is NOT a good game. The only thing that game got right was atmosphere and it had a decent story. But when a game just feels like a chore to play after the first 15-30 minutes you know it isn't good. Plus 60 bucks for a short single-player only game. Damn I regret my purchase.

I admit I never played God of War II or Okami but I find it somewhat surprising that Bioshock didn't also take home Best artistic achievement and Best story and character.

I'll admit shooting in Bioshock wasn't always easy, but it improved as you upgraded your weapons. Unfortunately it takes more than 15-30 minutes to upgrade your weapons. And as far as multiplayer goes, why does everyone feel every FPS HAS to have it? Why not every RPG? Every puzzle game? You like multiplayer and a game doesn't have it then perhaps renting would be a better idea.

I think most of these are fair, but I just don't understand Wii Sports for simulation. Look at the other titles in that list... They're barely comparable in their complexity. Because I can swing something around, that makes it an accurate simulation?

Also, I really don't get how shooting is a "chore" in Bioshock. That's the last thing I'd use to describe it.

For FPS they are so simple and easily played you need more content than just a short one-two play through game. RPG's are long and deeper, they don't need multiplayer. Puzzle games are usually so complex when you play the same level again you won't really notice or play it the same basic way. And Tim if one can review FPS games negatively for only being multiplayer then the same shold be said for a singleplayer only FPS. They are just to simple of a genre to not have more content than 12 hours of play.
I don't see how a game like Pariah, which suffered from the same "shooting isn't fun anymore" got rated so badly when Bioshock didn't. Eh, I like how they tried to break boundries of the genre, but they did so by adding fetch quests and two many elements that slow down the action I somewhat wish they didn't try so hard to be different. I commend them for trying to innovate but just because a game does that doesn't mean it's good. Everyone mindlessly loves Bioshock in the same similar way people do with games like Halo and Final Fantasy. I just really think the vast majority that find Bioshock god's gift to gaming are just sheep. Sure there may be some that honestly enjoy it because everyone's different but come on it wasn't that great.

"Best Strategy and Simulation: Wii Sports"
I love Wii Sports as much as the next person but that is a joke! I'm pleased that Crackdown won something though as that along with Bioshock are my PERSONAL GOTY contenders to date.

and yes, this is the first of many GOTY's that Bioshock will win to the chagrin of Halo fanboys everywhere.

I half expected Wii to do well. These people really have no idea about games and the Wii appeals to that.
Also of all the games available for the Gamers' Award how did Football Manager win. I voted for GoW. But I expect a bunch of Chavs found the voting site and chose the only Football game.
