A really real Halo 3 Da Vinci Code Easter egg
Usually video games are chalk full of secret images, objects or jokes that we call Easter eggs and are things developers hide in their game for the sole reason of having fun hiding stuff. But rarely do we get to use the coined term "Easter egg" so literally as is the case with the latest Halo 3 Easter egg named the Da Vinci Code Egg. Per the video above, you can see that Project Mod Gaming found numerous colorful eggs high atop multiplayer map Sandtrap, each with what looks to be a secret Da Vinci code printed on them. We aren't sure what the special code means, if the symbols are merely decoration for the eggs or why "Dani California" was chosen for the YouTube video, but we are going to fuel the rumor fire and say that this "code" will reveal something. What something? We aren't sure, but we want this Halo 3 Easter egg cracked and cooked sunny side up (we couldn't resist).
[Thanks, ProjectModChamp]

i love it when people find easter eggs in games (especially halo cuz it just further proves how unbelievably awesome the guys at bungie are (rvb conversation in h3?!)) but this one doesn't do it for me. its not, you know, "funny".

Stuff like this is pretty cool. Kind of interesting that someone spent a bunch of time investigating this map.

I don't think that is a easter egg. Reason being that the texture used is in fact a texture used in Halo 2 for vista when you make your own custom map and you skewed your oprginial textures up.

i'm not sure what it's supposed to be, but if you watch it the second time they fly into it (around -1:20) you can see that it's not even close to rounded as an egg should be. It's a shape, with details, but with a generic texture.
I'm sure if they just wanted to put an egg shape in, they could make it as smooth as visibly possible.

Agreed, the map is the same used to eliminate seems in the textures. Usually with ABC and 123 in a grid. While it's similar in shape and color to an easter egg, the Da Vinci code was a bunch of symbols, not letters and numbers, am I right?
Also, the bright pink & blue colors are also normal in UV maps.

You guys.. you know there is a real simple reason why the "egg" has the "codes" on it. Its because its default texture coordinates that are used to make sure that the texture placement is not warped. As for the reason why there is an egg on each side. Simple dude that developed the map used one large section and copied it to create a general large starting point and forgot that there was a sphere or as everyone likes to call it an "Easter Egg".

I know I'm a little late to the party, but this is a texture for mapping your UV coordinates on a mesh. Standard step in texturing an object.

There is code because there is no texture on it. In Halo 2 map maker, any maps with no thextures had that same coding.

You guys seem to already know what it is, but it reminds me of the "garbage data" on top of the SMB maps. It was the physical embodiment of the level information.
