The new five free HD DVD offer started October 1st and runs through February 28th, 2008 where with any new HD DVD player purchase, customers will get to choose five free movies. But, just like the other promotion, the movies are only obtained by mail (using this form) and the five free movies are limited to a select few titles broken into five different categories. A complete list of new HD DVD movies available in this offer as well as category breakdown can be viewed after the break. Oh, and did we mention King Kong is still bundled with the player? Well, it is, so it's like getting six free movies.
Also, it's worth mentioning that Walmart.com is running a special promotion where they're offering a free copy of 300 on HD DVD / DVD combo disc with any Xbox 360 purchase. The look and sound of perfect is now more affordable then ever.
Movies included in five free HD DVD offer
(only choose one from each category)
Category A:
Aeon Flux
Babel
The Italian Job
Category B:
The Hulk

The Thing
Category C:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Swordfish
Full Metal Jacket
Category D:

I actually think THIS list is 100x better. Funny thing is, I haven't sent my form in yet - doesn't expire until the end of October and I'm lazy. Too bad you have to have purchased between those specific dates or I'd send this one in for sure. I wonder if they'd notice...

Nice! Seriously, HD DVD is the BOMB. These are pretty good choices too. Check out Pitch Black, Troy, and Full METAL Jacket. Yeah... it's not MEDAL it's METAL. Anyway, 300 in HD is freakin' awesome... that alone is worth the jump.

most of those movies are so crappy they weren't even worth putting out on DVD.

This is very cool. I wonder why they don't advertise that this drive works on any newer PC? It would really open up the market if more PC users jumped onboard. What a great deal!

It's curious that there still hasn't been a European equivalent of this offer. I think it could spur HD-DVD sales here.
On the other hand, it may be too late for that since Blu-Ray currently has 80% of the European market. I'm in Holland and I just heard that the Free Records Shop chain is now going Blu-Ray only and dropping HD-DVD completely. If you're a HD-DVD fan, this is bad news. FRS stores usually go for the mainstream of the mainstream in their choice of CDs, DVDs and games, but still, they're the biggest electronics chain in the Netherlands...

Good God that selection is horrible. I balked at the last promotion, hoping there would be a better one at the holidays. It looks like I missed out.

wrong. it was only 5 movies last time as well. i believe amazon.com offered a few free movies but they had nothing to do with the last 5 free movies via mail. as far as this selection goes my movies would be:
A. Crappy movies here, but i'll go with Aeon Flux
B. Pitch Black
C. Swordfish
D. Crappy movies here too, but i'll go with Firewall
E. Troy
i am not saying i am going to spend money on this, just my hypothetical choices for the movies.....still too worried about the format war to drop 180 bucks on an hd dvd drive...

I might yet get an HD-DVD player, if only they came in black. Oh well...
Category A:
The Italian Job
(Wife likes this movie and the other two are just atrocious).
Category B:
Pitch Black, Riddick FTW.
Category C:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (which one?)
Oh... doesn't matter: Full Metal Jacket
Category D:
Uh...
Category E:
Hmm... Troy has a cool battle scene right?

Just as a heads up in case anyone really cares, that Troy edition up for offer is the old version, which is a joke compared to how hardcore the recently available Director's Cut is.
