We just learned what happens when you discount the price on the Xbox 360 HD DVD player and throw in five free movies. Our conclusion, they sell more than they did before. Looking through Amazon.com's sales rank
movers and shakers, the Xbox 360 HD DVD player's sales increased over 1,000% since the
$20 price drop. Who needs economics 101 when you've got Amazon.com. And if you're looking to cash in on this super sweet deal, give your local Best Buy a try, some stores are offering it for
$149.

I'm still waiting to see what's happening with the Video Marketplace in the UK before I make a decision on the HD-DVD drive.
My mate said the other day that he saw the drive for £100 but half the problem is I'm not really one for buying films, just renting them.
And Amazon (.co.uk) aren't doing HD-DVD rentals yet...

Meh...with the XBLVM promised to come to Canada this fall, I'll be getting my HD movies from there...and not HD DVD. Plus, I'm like Boff...I don't really buy movies...I rent them or go see them in theatres...OR just download them...

to be honest, 1,000% raise on amazon really isn't that big when a price drop happens.
ususally when it's a video game perhipheral and something like this happens, it reaches the 5,000 or more level.
Then again, if the player was already selling well, i guess that would dwarf the numbers and my comment is useless. ohhh well.

How i'm seeing the 360 play out is that with the hd dvd you have the format but the XBLVM will provide content that's signed up to bluray (Disney..) albeit in 720p.
I want an HD format, i want to watch films at the highest rest my TV can muster.. just hurry up about sorting out the stupid 'war'.

The HD Drive is awesome. I netflix HD movies, buy them used for less than 10 bucks or purchase new (like 300 for instance - just badass) for normal DVD prices. Not sure where you go to pay 30 bucks for them, but you're either not looking hard enough or getting ripped off. Plus the extra features smoke BluRay DVDs ten fold.

it doesn't mean that they're selling 1000% more, it's just determined by how it went up on sales rank. read the thing at the bottom of the movers and shakers index. it's at 16 but it was at 181, which means that it increased 165 sales ranks. since it is at 16, 165/6*100% = 1031%.
still though, going up that many places means the sales jumped enormously. for something to be at #16 on amazon it must be selling like hotcakes.

I just purchased it and I wish I would had done it sooner! HD is awsome, I actually would rather watch a movie at home now, then at the movies. I picked mine up at Sams club for $120.00. Call and ask before you go because I belive its only select Sams.

I bought this yesterday at Best Buy for $150 :) So now my HD collection consists of 300 and King Kong.
It will soon have The Rundown, Tomb Raider, The Chronicles of Riddick, U-571, and Constantine. I can't wait!

Use LOVEFiLM (www.lovefilm.co.uk). They're great and do both HD DVD and Blu-Ray rentals.
Also, yes the drive is £99.99 in the UK. Or at Gamestation anyhow. Well worth the cash if you have the TV to match.

Hopefully this will lead to more HDDVD sales and even out those Nielsen ratios a bit, but MS would need to sell at least (another) 100k of these to make this kind of dent.

@6 & 14: Thanks for the info, I know Lovefilm do them (and they've got quite a few too) but I left Lovefilm about 6 months ago and went back to Amazon cos I was never getting the films or games that were ANYWHERE NEAR the top of my list. My mate and I joined at the same time and paid exactly the same, he always got his #1 and honestly it felt like someone at Lovefilm had it in for me!
So it's Amazon and Boomerang instead.
And now out of principle I won't go back! (Yes, cut off my nose to spite my face.)

I still don't see why you'd want to support a format that has only 50% of the movie industry behind it (compared with the 90% backing that Blu-Ray has).
If you want to see the 100 most popular movies of whatever year, there's a 50% chance it will appear on HD-DVD while Blu-Ray fans have a 90% chance. The only reason it's not 100% is because Universal is holding out. If Universal changes its policy (which they may well do, since Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1), there's absolutely no reason at all to back HD-DVD.

Don't waste your money guys, you can't even enjoy the full features of HD-DVD on this add-on and HD-DVD seems to be losing the format war as we speak...
X-Box is talking about 45nm chipsets for '09, by then we'll see HD-DVD included or a Blu-Ray add-on accessory.

Well, the way I see it is that since this is so inexpensive, it will not matter if blu-ray wins.
The worst that can happen is that you can't get fresh new movies for your HD-DVD player.
Maybe by then a blu-ray player will actually be affordable.

Just got mine from Best Buy for 150...if you think watching 300 in 1080p isn't worth it then you haven't seen it.
