SEGA: VF5 will be a summer release

It seems there's some confusion surrounding the release date of Virtua Fighter 5 according to Eurogamer. It seems that several online retailers, including GameStop, Amazon, and Play.com, are listing the game as a fall or even winter release. SEGA begs to differ and has confirmed with Eurogamer that Virtua Fighter 5 is still planned as a summer release. Eurogamer also notes that we still don't know exactly what will be different between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the title, especially given recent revisions to the arcade game. Of course, we're all still hoping for online multiplayer, but we're not hoping too hard.

1. it BETTER be online multiplayer this is my favorite fighting franchise but due to tekken's popularity it's hard to find good competition. besides this IS what i got the xbox for after all .. if i wan't lame elbow rubbing gameplay i would've got that expensive ass ps3

2. According to Official Xbox Magazine's feature, the creators of VF5 said that it would not be online. They also said it wouldn't be online until the connection lag was less than 1/60 of a second, to ensure the gameplay remains true to the series.

3. Achievements, online leaderboards, at minimum.

4. I tried out the demo version on a PS3 kiosk and I'm now officially very excited to get this game.

Graphics are gorgeous and the responsiveness of the controls is silky smooth.

5. I'm leaning toward them not putting it online. VF5 has hardcore players that count frames per second and crap like that so any slowdown whatsoever would piss them off to no end. And if Street Fighter 2 can't run without slowdown online I'm guessing this won't.

6. So they'd rather piss off thousands of potential newcomers than the handful of 'veterans?' All but the most committed players do nothing more than mash buttons on these fighting games anyway, so I don't see this as the smartest move.

7. Muu, what are you smoking? and can I have some? seems like good shit! See, here's the problem with the whole "pissing off thousands of potential newcomers" thing.... those potential newcomers DON'T EXIST, at least not in high enough numbers that it would be worth sega's time to 1 - piss off the hardcore (like myself) who have been faithfully following the series since day one, we'll go elsewhere or stick to older versions of the game. 2 - destroy the franchise's rep. When a game has respect like VF does, the dumbest thing the keeper of the franchise keys could do is fuck with the secret sauce. Fighting games have had a sharp decline in popularity since their heyday in the 90's. I can tell you from experience that new blood is a rare thing indeed...

As a hardcore fighting game fan, I'm happy they're sticking to their guns and not caving for the frat boys who'll only play the game for a couple of months anyway. I mean capcom couldn't pull of SFII, which is only 2d properly, Team Ninja certainly couldn't keep the lag out of DoA 4 either.

And for the record, VF vetrans aren't a handful, it's more of a legion. ;)
