MS responds to Fils-Aime's claim

So, Reggie Fils-Aime voiced his opinion on the 360's sales in Europe, and Microsoft wasn't going to just sit and listen to such statements. They came back to say that they are on track to meet their 12 million shipped worldwide milestone by the end of June 2007, having shipped 10.4 million back in December. They also pointed out that the 6 million Xbox Live users worldwide is nothing to scoff at either. Still, it will be interesting to see how things stack up after the other two consoles have been on the market for a year.

1. I bet Sony will release something just to, you know, be Sony.

2. i personally dont think its even fair to compare the wii to the ps3 or 360 in terms of sales. i mean the wii...here in canada...costs 3/5 the price of a 360 and 3/7 the price of the ps3. plus...theres nothing really "next gen" about the wii. yes, the gameplay might be innovative; yes, it might have nintendo classic (or whatever the service is called) but it doesnt have next gen games and graphics which are the most defining and "arguable" characteristics of the 360 n ps3...

maybe when were comparing the 360 and the wii...we should compare how much revenue they've generated for the parent companies...cuz then it really wouldnt be a competition...in that case...the wii might sell more units...(assuming canadian prices: 300 for a wii and 500 for a 360)...it does take 5 wiis to make up 3 360s...

and yes...the 360 is a monster compared to the tiny little wii. and they will never stack up. the POS3 is even worse than the wii. :P

3. DjDATZ you also got to remember that Nintendo is making a profit on all of the Wiis while MS was losing money on the first ones and is now barely in the black.

4. I can't give a damn about what Fils-Amie has to say. All I gotta say as a serious gamer that hardly a day goes by that I don't fire up my 360. However, my Wii collects dust unless I happen to get the glowing blue light telling me that Nintendo has released some new dumbass channel that I don't care about rather than giving me online gaming or Virtual Console games I care about. Why doesn't Fils-Amie tell me where Nintendo is keeping the "thousands and thousands" of games that were just supposed to fly onto the Virtual console for you to play soon after the Wii was released? I remember at E3, Fils-Amie made fun of the 360 when Microsoft announced they would have 50 Arcade games. Guess what? It's mid-March and there still isn't over 50 Virtual Console games.

5. the wii is a short life product. if nintendo thought otherwise they would have charged more and then they would have had somewhere to go with the price. if your going to compare the wii to anything compare it to those interactive dvd games or at best the handhelds. its not next gen it was just released when the next gen console were released.

has anyone else noticed that still so close to release day and i can walk into any shop down the high street and for £50 deposit guarantee launch day delivery. still i expect sum loser are going to be queuing all nite so they can get comments on the bbc website saying "iv had a playstation since i was an embryo and nothing could make me change my ways"

6. DjDatz is right. The Wii can't be compared with the two power house REAL next-gen consoles. The wii is in it's own little catagory away from the big kids, the wii is in the kiddy pen.

7. @Saccia, what are you talking about?

There are 68 Virtual Console games on the Wii in North America, and 88 available in Japan. XBLA has 48 games. Nintendo's releasing between 2 and 4 every week, and Microsoft is releasing between 0 and 1 every week.

8. While I agree that the Wii shouldn't be compared to the 360 or PS3, I think the notion that "there is nothing really "next gen" about the Wii" to be probably one of the silliest things I've ever heard.

I think we're too used to the idea that "next gen" is just new games with updated graphics and sound. Nintendo's just created a new way of playing video games... if that isn't next generation, than I don't know what is.

Now I don't own a Wii, but I do have a 360 and enjoy it immensely. But I just think its foolhardy to keep arguing over which is better because I believe they can't be compared.

9. "3. DjDATZ you also got to remember that Nintendo is making a profit on all of the Wiis while MS was losing money on the first ones and is now barely in the black."

Why does that matter anyway? We're gamers, not shareholders. All that matters is Install base, attach rate, and games. If we're look at financials of a corperation on how it effects us, weather Microsoft makes a profit compared to Nintendo dosen't matter. This is Microsoft.. and as long as they ar even for now, it dosen't matter... Microsoft isn't going anywhere.

10. Forget the "shipped" numbers. Fairly accurate "sold-through" numbers are available here:

http://www.vgcharts.org/

The Wii is mopping the floor with the 360 if you look at relative launches. And the Wii is still in the "people line up weekly hours before the store opens to buy it" phase of demand that the 360 was out of within a few weeks of launch. Further, demand is harder in Europe than the US for the Wii, basically guaranteeing that the Wii will outsell the 360 this year in terms of total units available to customers.

Microsoft's impressive 1.6 million units shipped in 6 months aside, the Wii will have shipped no less than 5 million units in that same time frame.

Hey, I like the 360 and I enjoy 1080p gaming, but I can call a spade a spade: Nintendo is dominating MS in terms of sales. The 360 isn't selling very well anyhow.

11. People seem to forget a simple fact, Nintendo is now the entry level price point for the next round of systems (PS3, XBOX360, and Wii)

Nintendo having the entry price point, that is $150 cheaper in the USA the the next machine (360) is going to be appealing to parents when little Sally or Billy ask for a new machine. Of course Nintendo has always had that appeal to kids.

12. 360 has 6 million users online! So how many online gamers does the Wii have?......OH Wait, My Bad! lol

Posted at 3:55PM on Mar 20th 2007 by Azorean

13. I think nintendo will have a much better 1st year then 360, maybe even second... but then the noveltiy buyers are over with and the 360 comes out ahead. look at the gamecube. started out positive, then 2 years later it was alreadya brick.
