Dean Takahashi, Xbox guru and writer for Mercury News, recently wrote an article about a friend of his. The friend, Rob Cassingham, 42, has been through seven different 360 units, and all of them have failed. Cassingham purchased four at the the Zero Hour launch event, and all four "croaked." While waiting for his seventh unit to arrive from Microsoft, Cassingham wrote Takahashi to let him know that he was fed up with the console, and planned on selling the final unit when it arrived. Takahashi then sent Cassingham's complaint directly to Peter Moore, who in turn has had his console replaced with a brand new unit. Cassingham is still torn about the affair, and admits that part of him would rather sell the unit and be done with it. Still, he plans on keeping the machine and to purchase an extended warranty. With stories like Cassingham's piling up, Microsoft's continued claims that 360 failure rates are within the standard will not hold up much longer.

This is hard to imagine... where was he keeping all of his consoles? On top of shag carpeting with no ventilation?

When my 360 died recently (one month AFTER the warranty ended) all I did was go to Target, buy a new one, and then return the dead one (for a full refund) in the new one's box after swapping the hard drives. Yeah it sucks that someone else will probably go to target and buy my dead one now, but I figure Target can send it back to Microsoft vs. me paying for a brand new console after one year of owning it.

I thought you couldn't do that swapping trick since you can always see the serial number right through the box?

They never said "failure rate" they said "return rate". Meaning people who had problems didn't return them to the store for a brand new unit as a replacement. (of course they knew that the store didn't have any to replace them with) It was just tricky wording done by Microsoft.

One thing manufactures hate is the internet because when people say that X product broke, it like crying wolf. Everybody thinks that the product has a higher defective rate then there actually is.
Okay, lets look at the numbers. How many have they said they sold? 10 Million? okay, 3-4% of broken units, which is with in most companies allowed defectives. 400,000 units would be with the 4% Then lets take the 20,000 units that are said on http://www.xbox360defective.com SO, if all 20,000 units broken on the website true, plus figure in that a lot do not get to this web site. That would take 380,000 MORE units to reach the 4%.
Companies have a defective allowance, I went thru 4 ipods before I had the one I have now that works fine. I didn’t scream or bitch that Apple was making a piece of crap, I lived with it and if I took a hit, I did.
Things break, electronics have problems, oh well this is nothing new. How many people had PS2’s crap out on them and how many didn’t?
PS. Yes I am a fan of the 360 over the PS3 (don’t make me pay extra for a blu-ray drive, I want a model without it)

#3 your guilty of fraud, and your a liar too.
It's impossible, Target has the serial number on the receipt, nice try.
I have had my 360 for a year and a half, 10 days ago I got the rings of death!! I sent it to MS facility in Texas, and they are saying they haven't received it yet, as of today!!
Obviously I am really upset about this.
Not mention that they wanted to charge me $140 for an out of warranty repair (they came down to $69.99, big whoop)
Anyway, I have taken meticulous care of my 360 since day one, and still got the rings of death. Proper ventilation and care don't mean a thing evidently..... :(

I swear... I get so tired of hearing about everyone's 360 failing. Mine is working just fine and so are millions of others, and whenever these things come out it's so sensationalized that you'd think every 360 was faulty. I'd bet this guy put the thing in a cabinet. No way does a product fail that many times and still be the product's fault.
One of my friends got the red lights and bitched and bitched about Microsoft, until they finally admitted they put it on top of their VCR inside a small, cramped cabinet.
Seriously? Seven?
I'm pretty sure the "Game Center" had these things inside plastic bubbles, just like the PS3. This isn't Microsoft's fault. This guy has no right to complain after breaking 7 units.
I think it's safe to say this guy's an idiot.

I wouldn't say he has the worst damn luck, actually.
I myself have similar stories:
a.) My friend purchased a brand new premium system from Circuit City. When we took it home, I noticed that it had some pretty ugly scratches on the top of the console, but i just wrote this off as a manufacturing error. So we hook everything up, start to play Madden, and I get the three ring red light error. Call MS, they tell us we have to take it back. So we took it back, got a new console, and set it up. This time, though, it asked us to create a gamer profile and set up the HD settings, something it didn't do previously. What does this mean, you ask? Well, Microsoft gave Circuit City a used 360 to sell as brand new. Okay, I thought. These errors happen, whatever. Now on to my story.
b) I purchased my 360 about a month ago, was really pumped excited etc. I played Gears of War, everything was good. Then on the second day of ownership, I got the three ring red light. (Also--I noted that the hard drive looked pretty messed up, but I didn't think anything of it.) So I had to take it back and get a new console. When I took it back and set the new console up, I noticed another oddity. The 360 I bought 2 days before had a TON of extras on it. Like 5 demos, and something like 10 videos. The new 360 I bought had none of these.
In conclusion, I'm fairly certain after these two instances that Microsoft is re-selling used 360's as new consoles, rather than Refurbished. Not exactly the best idea, no?

This is just ridiculous. The article states that this guy was renting out the 360s to kids in his town. Who knows what these kids did with their rental 360s? We all know how kids treat Gamefly games and how we treat rental cars. I have to think that will have something to do with the failures.

Why does everybody defend MS for this? Clearly 360s are breaking and the people who complain about them breaking are doing nothing to effect everyone else EXCEPT that they are trying to hold MS accountable, which is the first thing everyone else will try to do when their 360 breaks and they start crying about it too.
People who say "my xbox is fine; these people are retarded" are going to be crying the same thing if their box breaks, so just can it, let the people get fixed 360s, and don't be jerks.

I'm on my 5th xbox. I was an employee of Best Buy at launch and got the 360 day 1. I just recently got a "new" unit (it's a refurb) that has a manufacture code of Sept. 06.
After trying to register my new serial # on xbox.com and getting a "this serial # has already been registered", I called the 1800 number and had my question answered. I then asked what would happen if THIS one stopped working as well. I was told to purchase an extended warranty for something like 30 for a year and 60 for 2 years...something like that since my warranty on this one is up on March 17.
She then told me that since I was on my 5th box, that I was eligible for a new unit but added that I didn't hear that from her.
And just so you guys can't hassle me, my Xbox is sitting next to my tv on top of an ikea tv stand. It's not enclosed, it's almost 2 feet from the wall and about 7 inches from the tv on the side.

man i think its some sort o prgoram epidemic, liek the y2k bug or soemthing.
CAuse my system was working fine 2 days ago up untill 5 in the morning when i ecided to crash after a long night o orb collectiing in Crackdown, and i wake up the next morning to find my x-box not wanting to read any of my disc's telling my that my disc was unplayable.
I figure something with the cd driver...ether way i had the option of buying a core system and switchign up my tower, but end up costing me money I ulitmately do not have, or take it to Future shop, and cash in on my warranty,so i figure go the future shop way. The desk clerk told me that its takes a long time to haer from microsoft, and if i don't hear from them i just get a new system in 60 days....so now I'm stuck without a system... didn't have to pay any fee's....yet. either way I wish I had done what that Target guy did.

It's always odd to me when I read these as I've had no problems and neither have any of my friends. It certainly seems overly common, but again, Benjamin09's explanation is what I generally figure is the case.
I did have some issues with the system freezing, but I did one little thing and I've never had that problem again. I have my system sitting horizontally. There's little vents on the bottom and just laying the system down essentially blocks them. I put a book underneath it so these vents are raised and no longer blocked.
It seems like a tiny thing, but it helped me out at least.

I think this may have more to do with the user and not the console. I have had my system since day one and it's fine. Knock on wood. Besides, what are the alternatives? The PS3?

7? Yeah right. This reminds me of my mother-in-law, who thinks men are worthless and she is on her fifth husband and there is one common denominator in those failed marriages. I get the feeling that even if this is real, the 360 most likely isn't the problem.

Stop sensationalizing things already. I am on my 4th and my roomate has had his since launch without so much as a glitch. Luck of the draw I guess. There are OBVIOUSLY used and refurbished units still in circulation people. Get a brain, this is no secret. It doesn't mean every NEW 360 purchased is going to break. And to clue you idiots in that don't do research... DON'T buy NEW items at stores that RESTOCK RETURNS or open box....i.e. Wal-Mart and Circuit City!! Not all of this is Microsoft's fault. There are dishonest dipshit's out there that return things that are broken or ship stuff that aren't fixed and these are the blogs we get to read about. So quit your bitching, worring, complaining, crying or whatever. If you don't want to take a chance... wait another year til NEWER models are in circulation. Otherwise.. deal with it and shut up already. This calculating failure rates and worring about yours breaking is BULLSHIT. There are plenty of people who have had no problems. Its a great system with bad press due to unfortunate circumstances... NOT BAD ENGINEERING!! And I'm a guy talking who's on his 4th.
I still wouldn't trade one for any other console. You'll notice the majority of these units stem from the months revolving around the launch and that are now refurbished and back in circulation. To all those who want to buy a new one, quit being so paranoid and buy one. I'd put money down on a bad batch of 360's that were manufactured around launch added to people recycling the bad units as new or refurbished. Again.. it doesn't mean ALL 360's are DOOMED TO BREAK. Anyone who says otherwise is a fanboy for the other consoles or a retard.

I just bought one yesterday and this freaks me out a little. If you have an entertainment stand for your TV, are you saying you can't even put it on a shelf in the entertainment stand? My stand isn't very big so there's no where to stand it up right or lay it down other than in the stand on a shelf or on the carpet. And I know the carpet is bad.
