Yesterday at CES, Zune Boards received some insider information about Microsoft's mobile gaming plans from Xbox rockstar Peter Moore. Moore told the press that the Zune would be able to play video games on its extra wide screen in the future, but no sooner than July 2008. If the current Zune model is what they're thinking of using to play games, then damned if we won't be jaded. We were thinking more along the lines of an actual stand alone portable to play games ... not an MP3 player with limited input devices. Maybe this is a stepping stone to what may bloom into a full fledged Xbox portable gaming system, but something we wouldn't see for years to come. So Mr. Zune, we've realized that you aren't our Xboy. Yes it's hard, but it would be best if we just went out seperate ways.

I have a Zune, and it rules. But I do agree, couldn't imagine gaming with it. The D-Pad works nice...maybe the can make an add on with buttons or something. I don't know. But the Zune is definately better than Ipod.

Zune should just call it quits now, with iPhone just released, this kind of news gets over shadowed by a very BIG shadow. Its just become anothe generic MP3 player, and lets face it, unless Micro decides to take a step into the phone industry and whole new market, they have lost, iPod reigns supreme. All hail the iPod!

@Bacon and eggs, apparently you missed the price-point and network restrictions? the iPhone is cool... but it's also $600 (unless you'd like to save $100 and get half the memory) and also only works on Cingular's network... Somehow I doubt it's going to be the blazing success the iPod has been. I mean, the most expensive smart phone Cingular sells is still $200 less than the the iPhone...
And no, the Zune is not another generic mp3 player... then it would be cool. It's actually another feature-limited drm-infected piece of crap like the iPod. Don't confuse market share with quality (or does EA make the best games ever?)

I'd also like to point out the whopping 8gb of flash memory on the iPhone. The Zune can't even compete.

The Zune doesn't really have that much going for it. I compared the Zune to the iPod, and unfortunately the iPod won - in the end, I went for an 80gb black iPod. I was intrigued by the wireless functionality of the Zune, until I saw it's limitations and then it became pretty much an after-thought.
The Zune is a decent mp3 player, but it really doesn't do anything better than the iPod, which is going to have a hold of the pocket media world for a while.
At the end of the day however, both the iPod and Zune do what they're supposed to: play music, and now play videos. They're certainly not meant for games, having tried to play Bejeweled for the iPod and failing.

iPhone? Puh-leeeze! It's not even a smartphone! It doesn't even have 3G data access! You can't even download music over your wireless connection! Talk about half-assed!
And Zune and iPhone aren't even competing. One is a high capacity MP3 player while the other is a cellular phone with less than 30% of the storage of the first.
I want to listen to music, but I don't want to kill the battery on my cell phone at the same time.
Oh, and there is NO way you can talk on the phone and listen to music for 16 hours on one charge. (As is claimed) Maybe if you wear the battery like a belly bag... and it weighed 10lbs.

James, your a joka, if you want to listen to music, why buy Zune still, Ipod Nano owns it in every possible way :P And it give you exactly what you want, music. Microsoft, get out of there NOW!
Oh, and AoE, you're one of the first to moan about price, not happy? Forget you then :P Don't buy. You pay more for quality products like iPhone and pay less for rather bland products like Zune :)
