Update: Editor's note: this post is a duplicate of another story written earlier. Xbox 360 Fanboy apologizes for this error. We have turned off comments and ask that you direct them to the original post here. The fine folks over at ars technica are reporting that that movie and TV industries are embracing the idea of offering digital content via the Xbox Live Marketplace. In the article they compare the movie downloading services of Amazon's Unbox, CinemaNow, Movielink and the XBLM. Though no official data has been released, it turns out the XBLM is not only leading the pack in terms of studio interest, but overall interest from consumers. The 360 offers two unique advantages that the other competitors can't offer: bypassing a computer and directly playing content on your home television, and that HD content is easily accessible for HD hungry consumers. A very interesting read that analyzes the current market for downloadable movies/TV and where it's headed in the coming year.
As you know we haven't dived into the movie/TV purchasing service, but if you have, what are your impressions? Do you love it or just love to hate it?

For me it's all about convenience, it's nice to be able to turn on my 360 and just grab a movie. The CSI episodes in High Def are great, and I like the fact that once I buy a show, I can keep it as long as I want.

I'm an hour into watching Jackass right now. It is the third movie I've rented off the service since it started. The other two movies were HD and looked great on my 720p HDTV.
I do agree that this service is the best of the downloadable movie services. Just as the article said, having it hooked up to your HDTV helps a lot.

i have rented two great movies. Now they just need to really expand the selection. Partner with blockbuster or somebody to get thousands of movies out. They will be unstopable...

Your comments: Just so you know...Richard already posted
this: http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2006/12/22/video-marketplace-tops-similar-services/
It may seem different, but in the arstechnica article they link to the
same Variety article as Richard did.

I agree with others that it's very easy to just download something and watch it within a few minutes. TV shows are the best. Especially if I miss an episode, I can grab it.. It's as easy as buying an Arcade game..
I've considered buying content from Amazon before, but I don't want to watch the content on my laptop, even with the 17" widescreen.. That's just not appealing when I have a 61" screen with a decent audio system to go along with it.. My little laptop speakers just don't compare..

@refinedsugar
Have you used the service lately? They fixed it so that you don't have to wait for the complete Video to download anymore. It streams the content and it's ready to play within minutes not hours. Step away to get your beverage/snacks and it’s ready to play.

I do like the download service a lot, but I hate having to browse for movies using only the remote. So I will either add a convenient search feature or better yet something that allow me to select my movies from a web browser. That way, I can log on using my msn account at work, select the movies I want (similar to what I do with my netflix account) and when I'm at home and turn on my xbox, the movie will start downloading automatically.
I mean, right now I have to wait at best 3 working days to get my movies from netflix, so waiting for a HD movie to download is not a problem for me.
By the way, I have not downloaded any movie as of now (only CSI episodes). I would like to know, do movies come with the same content as a DVD? Meaning, multiple language, director commentary and that kind of stuff..?
Best regards,

I've downloaded a tv show and a movie. It was easy and simple. It cost the same amount as renting a movie from Blockbuster (even less depending on the Blockbuster and movie) and it's convenient. You don't have to leave your home to get it.
I'd like to try Amazon's unbox because I think they have a better variety as well as cinemanow and some other services, but unfortunately, they've locked me out. I need to have Internet Explorer and a Windows PC to use their PC, so to me that is rather unfortunate. I would love to stream a movie downloaded from unbox to my 360 (which you can do) but I'm not switching OSes (I love my Mac).
Now, if there were a way to get WMV so that I could stream them using connect360, that would be great.

I've downloaded Nach Libre. Great experience. Download three episodes of Studio 60. Great experience. My biggest problem is my ISP bandwidth, and that I've only got 1.6 gig left on my hard drive. They need to sell larger drive add ons, or allow downloading to an external device such as an external hard drive. I agree with Ulises that considering all the account activity I can do from my laptop, it's a shame that I can't set up movie and TV downloads from a compter.

Remember that when you download a tv show you can delete it keeping your hard drive space free, and download it later at no cost. This is a service that Sony can't touch and I see it getting a lot bigger as more companies see that it's a great chance for them to make money. I will say that the one thing I'm waiting for is where we can download an HD version of a movie that comes out in the theater day and date (I don't care if it's a little bit more money- $10-$15 maybe). When I can download/rent a movie that just came out in the theater and watch it at home on my 106 inch front projector and forgo the whole theater itself that will be a day of joy (though I'm not holding my breath).

I love it. I've downloaded several episodes of Star Trek. Unfortunately, I can't download anything else as my HD is full to capacity. So that sucks. And once I downloaded an episode of Star Trek called Errand of Mercy, but the episode that played was City on the Edge of Forever. But after 3 days, I got a points refund from MS.

Now it's all starting to make sense. In typical Microsoft fashion, they launched the Video Marketplace before it was 100% perfect just to make sure they got the product out ahead of the curve. Now, by the time download-to-TV movie rentals are common place, Microsoft will have a few years experience and studio relationships under their belt.
Now, once they start getting a lot of content, and add an all-you-can-watch monthly service, I'm sold!
