TGS: Eternal Sonata gameplay/combat video

A new video of Eternal Sonata (the western name for Namco's Trusty Bell) has popped up over at GameVideos. More than just a showcase for the pretty environments, fans will be happy to know that the video shows off the game's previously unknown combat engine. The combat, as far as we can tell, is similar to Grandia but with real time elements. Each character has a limited amount of time to execute real time combos and spells. Then the enemy has a similar amount of time to retaliate. One might assume that higher level characters have more time to act. At any rate, it might give turn based haters a reason to take another look at Eternal Sonata. Turn based haters ... sounds like the name of a band. See the video after the break.

Grandia's combat does have real time elements. That's why it was so special at the time.

All of the characters independently move at different recovery speeds on the timer, and using different moves requires different recovery times as well. If you waited for more than one character to be ready, you could use combos.

Perhaps I should clarify. By real time I meant that you press buttons to initiate each attack, similar to 3rd person action games. Grandia was as close to real time as it got back in the day, and I still dig its combat. Hopefully, this will expand on that even further.

Eternal Sonata is the lamest name ever. What was wrong with Trusty Bell? I heard somebody say Eternal Sonata sounded like a Castlevania sequel, and thats dead on. I hope to God they go back to their origional title.

The game still looks sweet tough.

Wow, the gameplay looks silky smooth and the environments looks beautiful.

Eternal Sonata is not such a bad name. Chopin composed piano sonatas and it's a play on the phrase eternal slumber. Maybe it was feared the name "Trusty Bell" would warrant ignorance because it sounds too cute to bother even looking at what it really is as a game. But I do like the name Trusty Bell myself.

The game is looking great.

But is it just me or what the heck is wrong with that inbuilt gamevideos trailer?

Looks like a DOS game running on 320x200.
