Maybe I'm spoiled by the 200 gig drive I stuck in my original Xbox, but it irks me that PS3 fanboys get to brag about a bigger hard drive, even if Ken Kutaragi has yet to claim it can bend space and time.
Do you think Microsoft is obligated to release an upgraded hd to match Sony? I've heard many people say that they don't "need" that much space, but that sounds like a sour grapes position, especially if you believe that the future is all about downloadable games and content.

It should be left to the buyer to whether they want 20gig, 40 gig, 60 gig etc.. Not everyone will need or want anything more than 20 but then a minority of people might want more than 60 gig but anything more than 40 at the minute is far too much I think.

How bet letting me buy and install the HD of my choice? If you have the connector/case from the Premium you theoretically can already. MS should sell those cases for $49 and continue to sell the 20GB for $99. That way those who want more space can do it as they see fit. Others who don't "need the space" can be happy too.
Also what about Downloading those full movies and games over xboxlive and store them on another Vista computer HD on your network? 360 and vista supposedly will play nice so I can't see why they can't share locked down data.Just a thought.

I had a larger HD in my original Xbox (now dead...sob) and it was great.
I would put movies and music on it (a lot).
XBMC was excellent for all that.
I also had copied a few of my favorite games to it as well. The load times on Halo from the HD was great. When it died I kept my games until the 360 was released and now that's where I play them (the ones that were on the list).
MS should upgrade the dash and add the functionality of XBMC, but if we don't see that then I guess we'll never need anything larger (unless we see more games like FFXI that want the HD space to run...then we're screwed).

Refined, it's not an either/or choice with the right set up. You can never have too much hard drive space.

This anouncement has EVERYTHING to do with the 360.
With the state of play as it is, microsoft have been enjoying their next gen advantage. Sony are now comitted to a november launch, and therefore will be releasing morsels of info in a steady trickle, as the hype machine wakes once more. It may be more expensive at launch than the 360, but a built in 60 Gig HD is an attractive proposition for the many consumers who have yet to make a choice.
The interesting part comes with the so called 'second wave' of 360 titles, and future Live developments.
If microsoft are serious about challenging for the market share this time, they are going to have to match these 'headturning' announcements, and raise the game. The delay and egg on face that Sony have suffered will, no doubt, cost them, but then again, come november, will that extra time pay off - big sellers like Devil may Cry etc could be ready as launch titles.
If Halo 3 is being used as a counter attack for our favourite console, then xmas looks like it is going to be one expensive holiday and as each giant tries to impress the most, it is us, the consumers, who may be set to win...
Bring it on.

Sure hd space is great Ken, but not at the expense of Xbox Live functionality.

Agreed. It's definately news for here. I didn't buy a 360 b/c I thought it was inferior xbox 1.5. I bought it b/c I expect it to win the consumer $. Therefore better games/services in my hands. So when Sony ups the ante with a 60GB HD there will be an answer from Billy G.(is not my lover) and the rest of the Xbox camp. Whether it's an add-on HD or better connectivity to PC Harddrives through Vista or whatever else, is what we should be discussing as xbox360 fanboys, not whether or not it's news...cause it is;)

Dont you think Microsoft will just allow downloads like video and music to be saved to your desktop pc via your home network? Why put money into hard drives on consoles when desktops have such large ones? That and it makes sense to have all you content stored in one location, rather than some on your console and some on your desktop.
PCs are going to become more like home servers for content like this IMO. So really the 20gb hard drive is just so users can save games and patches. Seem like enough space for that kind of thing to me.

I'll be in line for a larger HD ASAP. I've got 3gb of space left on mine and I've already had to delete some items to make room for new stuff. I was disappointed when the final 360 specs dropped and it was learned we'd only get a 20 gb drive. Then, I was even more pissed when I realised that we only got 10-12 mb to play with!
Bottom line, give me a bigger drive or open up my home PC drive for storage thru media connect AND media center PCs.

I hope that's the way it goes(networked storage). It starts to make even more sense when you factor in the fact that Sony also announced that PS3 will ship with some flavor of linux already installed. Wouldn't that be something if Vista and PS3 didn't play nice? I wonder if Sony already figures that'll be the case and plans on dropping some Vaio's with the same flavor of linux.Fits in with Sony's constant plan of propritary formats.

huh? I thought the PS3 HDD is gonna be upgradable.....So why is it located in the middle of the console?
hard drives are so cheap these days I dont see why both consoles have such small ones, and why not put like a 160 or 200 gig in it.(?)

the xbox 360 is designed for vista and as such every new computer with a premium os will be able to send videos, tv, etc. to the 360 as the media centre functionality is bulit in meaning the "massive" hard drive is not is theory going to be needed but i expect that a larger one will be released e.g. 40 or 60gb. but anything larger is going into very high prices for the storage space avaliable as both 360 and ps3 are going to/do use the 2.5" hard drives

Sony might have an advantage on the HDD but what about software features? Can you have music on the hard drive, from any USB device, or stream it from your PC (or Mac with Connect360). Can you use it for demos, game saves, etc? Also, if it does support music on the hard drive, will it be the only feature, so you would have to rip every song from a CD like the original Xbox?
Also, the 360 has a major design advantage, expandability. Like MS can very easily upgrade the hard drive to compete against Sony, which I expect to see MS get a bigger HDD, which will more than likely an 80GB HDD, but I also predict that it could be 100GB because of the DirecTV blade, that is if it has any DVR functions.
The advantage even comes to wireless. Once 802.11n and WiMax, or any other wireless standard comes out, MS could easily release a new wireless adapter that's compatible to them, while the PS3 is stuck with 802.11g/b all its life. Also, who knows (beyond the camera and HD-DVD drive) what kind of peripherals will come out for 360.

to #15.
what I want out of the 360 is for the USB ports to work with external HDD's, the 20gb is plenty for all my songs and saves, But i want to turn the 360 into a PVR...and if your recording video, you need massive HDD's, escpecially if your recording HDTV.

MS probably saw this coming! (thas why the hard drive is DETACHABLE) So we could probably see 40, 60, 100 gig or larger hard drives come out. It makes sense. The average person is not gonna need more than 20 gigs of memory space. And seeing that games will be downloaded straight to your hard drive in the near future, it makes sense to have detachable storage. Thas my 2 cents.
